This congregation belongs to God, and God is the host of this worship service. The
members of this church are God’s servants. It is our duty to make you feel at home.
Restrooms. When you face the front doors of the church, you are facing north. The
men’s room is located in the northwest corner, to the left as you face the front doors. The
women’s room is located in the northeast corner, to the right.
Large print programs are available in the foyer. Ushers will help you find one.
Hearing assistance units are also available in the foyer. Ushers will assist you.
The majority of us participate by standing, kneeling, sitting, speaking and singing.
Please join us as you are able and when you feel comfortable. But there is no right or
wrong way to worship.
We receive gifts of money during the time of the “offering.” Dove of Peace is a
nonprofit organization that is funded solely by the generosity of our members and
friends. This is an important moment with religious significance for us.
Communion is the ceremony in which we receive bread and wine, believing that we
simultaneously partake of the body and blood of Jesus, the Lord of this congregation.
This is a profound and meaningful event for us. It is so meaningful that we do not
exclude anyone; Jesus is the host here, and we are only his servants. All baptized
Christians are welcome to partake. Our teachings also suggest that if you believe the
words “shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” you are properly prepared to receive the
bread and wine.
Anyone with limited mobility will receive communion where they sit. Please advise the
usher, and the ministers will bring communion to you.
Children who do not yet receive communion may receive a blessing from the minister.
The age of communion is decided by parents. Our pastor is glad to discuss this with
parents and their children.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who spoke light into creation,
who calls us to listen and follow, who sends us to shine like stars.
Amen.
Holy and merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against our sisters and brothers
and against you. We cherish the values of this world.
We cause others to stumble. The earth is wounded by our excess.
Have mercy, O God. Forgive us, renew us, and raise us up on eagles' wings,
that we may do your will with courage and delight.
Amen.
Hear the voice from heaven:
"You are my own, my beloved."

*PRAYER OF THE DAY
Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters.
Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your
Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST READING : Genesis 1:1-5
Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the primeval darkness, God brings light. This familiar story was
good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news for any
person living in the chaos and darkness of despair. God created and continues to create new life.
A reading from Genesis.
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless
void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the
face of the waters. 3Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4And God
saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called
the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was
morning, the first day.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
SECOND READING : Acts 19:1-7
*GOSPEL: Mark 1:4-11
In Ephesus, Paul encounters people who had received John's baptism of repentance but had never heard of
the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After Paul baptized them, the Holy Spirit came upon
them and empowered them with gifts of the Spirit.
Mark's gospel reports the story of Jesus' baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is
himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit.
4
A reading from Acts.
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to
Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you became believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there
is a Holy Spirit." 3Then he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They answered,
"Into John's baptism." 4Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling
the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus." 5On
hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul had laid his
hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied — 7altogether there were about twelve of them.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Cantor:
A voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, | the Beloved,
with whom I | am well pleased.” (Matt. 3:17)
After the cantor, the assembly repeats the Gospel Acclamation above.
The holy gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the
people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan,
confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt
around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, "The one who is
more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the
thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit." 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by
John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens
torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven,
"You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart
*CREED
With the whole church, let us confess our faith.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

ELW # 800
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
*PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
After each petition, the minister concludes “Lord in your mercy,”
and the assembly responds “Hear our prayer.”
The presiding minister concludes the prayers:
Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your
mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Amen.
*PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.
The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace and may say “Peace be with you”
or similar words.

*OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray.
Good and loving God, we rejoice in the birth of Jesus,
who came among the poor to bring the riches of your grace.
As you have blessed us with your gifts,
let them be blessing for others.
With the trees of the field, with all earth and heaven,
we shout for joy at the coming of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

*DIALOGUE
*PREFACE
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ.
By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations;
in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son;
and in the miracle of water turned to wine he revealed your glory.
And so, with all the choirs of angels,
with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

*THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
Advent III - Epiphany of Our Lord
Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life:
Blessed are you for the birth of creation.
Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light.
Blessed are you for your promise to your people.
Blessed are you in the prophets' hopes and dreams.
Blessed are you for Mary's openness to your will.
Blessed are you for your Son Jesus,
the Word made flesh.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the
forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us,
full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
Come, Lord Jesus.
All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate,
Power of the Most High, one God, now and forever.
*LORD 'S PRAYER
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
Holy God, we long for your Spirit. Come among us.
Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people. Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
Come, Holy Spirit.
