ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE AND OUR LADY OF THE LAKE/MOUNT CARMEL IS A ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WITH THE EUCHARIST AS THE CENTER OF ITS LIFE. OUR MISSION, AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST, IS TO BUILD UP THE KINGDOM OF GOD BY LEADING, NOURISHING AND SERVING THE COMMUNITY IN WORD AND SACRAMENT FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. JOSEPH MARTIN JANUARY 11, 2015 BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE .. LAUGH A LITTLE! THE NEXT POPE There were two Catholic Boys, Timothy Murphy and Antonio Secola, whose lives paralleled each other in amazing ways. In the same year Timothy was born in Ireland, Antonio was born in Italy. Faithfully they attended parochial school from kindergarten through their senior year in high school. They took their vows to enter the priesthood early in college and upon graduation became priests. Their careers had come to amaze the world; but, it was generally acknowledged that Antonio was just a cut above Timothy in all respects. Their rise through the ranks of Bishop, Archbishop and finally Cardinal was swift to say the least, and the Catholic world knew that when the present Pope died, it would be one of these two who would become the next Pope. In time the Pope did die, and the College of Cardinals went to work. In less time than anyone had expected, white smoke rose from the chimney, and the world waited to see who they had chosen. The world, Catholic, Protestant and secular were surprised to learn that Timothy Murphy had been elected Pope! Antonio was beyond surprise, he was devastated, because even with all Timothy's gifts, Antonio knew he was the better qualified. With gall that shocked the Cardinals, Antonio asked for a private session with them in which he candidly asked, "Why Timothy?" After a long silence, an old Cardinal took pity on the bewildered man and rose to reply, "We knew you were the better of the two, but we just could not bear the thought of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church being called Pope Secola. Sorry, everyone! I couldn’t resist passing this along!! Happy New Year! BAPTISM OF THE LORD FIRST READING: ISAIAH 42:1-4, 6-7 Isaiah tells of the Lord’s Servant, who will be inconspicuous, but will not rest until justice is established. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be “a light for the nations.” SECOND READING: ACTS 10:34-38 Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God’s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality. GOSPEL: MARK 1:7-11 John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a voice said, “You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests.” NEXT WEEK’S READINGS SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FIRST READING: 1 SAMUEL 3:3B-10, 19 SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:13C-15A, 17-20 GOSPEL: JOHN 1:35-42 1 MASS INTENTIONS ANNOUNCED MASSES – JANUARY 11, 2015 ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CHILDREN’S LITURGY Directed by Maura Crawford and Dr. George Bovino [email protected] (845) 226-3373 The St. James the Apostle Children’s Liturgy / Family Mass Program is designed to allow children to actively participate in several ways throughout the Mass. The Family Masses underscore the family aspect of attending and celebrating the Mass together. Children in grades 2-8 are invited to proclaim the word by being lectors, reading the introduction, the first and second readings and the prayer of the faithful. They can also choose to be gift bearers. Accompanied by the Youth Choir, led by Mary Peters, these liturgies uplift the spirits of the children and the entire congregation. We are currently updating our list of readers. If you think your child would like to become a reader, gift bearer, etc., please stop by the School, CCD or Parish office and pick up a registration form. This is a wonderful opportunity for your children and a very special way for them to be actively involved in their faith. We look forward to another very special year! God Bless you and your children. If you have a question about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability. 380. “How can I aim for perfect faith?” Imagine if you had perfect certainty that God was with you in all things. Think how differently you would respond to difficulties, temptations, or hardships if you were convinced that God was in all of it and would use it for good. Worry would be a thing of the past. That’s perfect faith and it is possible. Here’s how. Believe in God’s love. God is love, so to believe in God is to believe in his love. If God loves you, then he wills your good. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love” (1 John 4:16). Perfect faith comes from believing in God’s love. Practice makes perfect. Perfect faith results when we live God’s word, not just hear it. Practicing the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes and the two Great Commandments (love God, love your neighbor), we notice God’s hand in our lives and trust in him grows. 4 GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEDICATION OF ST. All our celebrations and events have been full and fantastic and on top of all our Golden Anniversary projects we have done many beautiful landscaping and evangelical activities. I am proud, as your Pastor, to tell you that our Parish has 4560+ registered families in St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mt Carmel, the largest in our history. I come to you today to ask that some of those families who have not yet made donations or pledge toward our Golden Anniversary projects do so now. We have four projects left to complete and I would love to hit our goal. We are at 82% right now from 464 families totaling $329,464.32. Our goal is $397,000 and that means this final phase needs to bring in $67,535.68 and THEN in the spring and summer we can complete the projects. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM 289 Niches still available – 163 purchased Our Terrace and Columbarium are open. We have already celebrated Mass at the new Altar and have 36 niches engraved and interred. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, please contact Mrs. Maureen Larkin at 845-225-2079 ext.105 Monday to Wednesday for information and an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word that describes a collection of niches to house urns containing cremated human remains. Usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, columbaria are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. May the Lord who has blessed this project now be a final resting place for many of our loved ones. 5 FROM THE PARISH NURSE STEWARDSHIP IN OUR PARISH CHRISTMAS FLOWERS CHURCH PARISH PAY INFLUENZA TOTAL $ 4,930.00 $ 420.00 $ 5,350.00 DECEMBER 25, 2014 CHRISTMAS COLLECTION CHURCH PARISH PAY TOTAL $51,975.50 $ 3,450.00 $55,425.50 Symptoms Influenza: Sudden onset of fever 100 degrees F or higher (37.8 C) and at least one of the following: Cough, Runny nose or Stuffy nose or Sore Throat There likely will be other symptoms such as headache, muscle aches, chills and fatigue. How long is an infected person contagious? Persons with Influenza are believed to be potentially contagious from the day before they become ill until the symptoms have ended, generally about 7 days. Persons with Influenza are asked to remain in voluntary isolation until they are fever free for 24 hours. For most persons with confirmed cases of this new influenza, the time needed to fully recover from an uncomplicated course of illness has been about 7 days. What is the incubation period for this new influenza strain? It appears to be 1-4 days on average; could be up to 7 days. Many of we who are a bit older were able to wait until our kids went to school before we started to work. Our mothers for the most part were homemakers. In today’s world there is not the luxury of leaving your job and returning some years later. Daycare has become big business and for many who do not have the luxury of family nearby, a necessity. If you are presently using daycare for your children you are very much aware of how much of your salary goes towards this bill. Consider this option: Saint James the Apostle School houses a PreK 3 and 4 year old program and a full day Kindergarten which are part of a PreK-8 school. This is a New York State accredited school with New York State certified teachers who receive ongoing professional development from two rather large institutions; the New York State Education Department and the Archdiocese of New York. Our teachers also continue the good work you have already started by sharing our faith with the children every day. As a part of Saint James the Apostle School the children in our PreK and Kindergarten programs benefit from all of our school activities. We have an aftercare program which is housed right here in our school. This program is run by our own staff. It runs until 6pm each day. Take a moment and compare the cost of your present day care situation to the cost of an accredited school program with after care. We are pretty certain you are paying far more than you would with us and you would have the added benefit of your child having an actual school experience. When making decisions to care for our children we always do what is the next best thing to us. You can’t get any more nurturing than a Saint James the Apostle School experience and probably will be able to put a few dollars in savings or a great family vacation. ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CCD CONFIRMATION ESSAY Each year our Confirmation students are required to write an essay as a part of their entrance requirement. We are very proud to share with our parish family some of the best work of our students. Please pray for these young people as they prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Dear Fr. Sorgie, Hi, my name is Annalena Fusco. My family consists of myself, my mom and our pet cat, “cat”. We live right here in the heart of Carmel. I attend George Fischer where I support the Rams by playing modified softball and volleyball. I also represent my school with stellar grades, high honor roll ever quarter since 5 th grade. I am also involved in the All-County performance for selected band players in all different counties across New York State, where I played the flute. Outside of school, I do baton twirling, where my teams this year took home three 2 nd place trophies and two 1st place trophies at the statewide competition. I also compete as a soloist where I received 2 nd and 4th place in two groups of 15 girls each. Lastly, I am a part of the Girl Scouts of America, where I have just recently completed work on my Silver Award, the highest award for my age group and the 2nd highest award in Girl Scouting. Being a Catholic is very important to me, and who I am. One person who has been important in my religious experience is Mrs. Mary Peters. She has been my CCD teacher three times, and when I was six years old she invited me to sing at the Children’s Masses. I now play the flute alongside her at each Mass. She has been a great influence by making sure I go to Mass every week, and how she always tries to answer my questions about faith when I have them. I attend Mass weekly and try to stay consistent during the summer months. When we go away, we still attend Mass at different parishes. I always have and will always participate in Mass, either by playing with the choir or just be singing and reading along. As I prepare for Confirmation, I will make an even greater effort to participate. I feel I am ready to receive Confirmation because of my knowledge of our faith. In my past 8 years of religious studies, I have received five Girl Scout religion medals. The Marian Medal I just received was given to me at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Sacrament of Confirmation is important to me because it will seal my faith in the Holy Spirit. So, Father Sorgie, this is why I feel that I am ready to be sealed in my faith as an 8th grader in our parish, St. James the Apostle.
