China’s Political Economy
Peter T. Y. Cheung
University of Hong Kong
Professor Cheung specializes in Contemporary China studies with a focus on
the relations between Beijing and Hong Kong SAR, the management of
cross-boundary issues in south China and the politics of policy making in
Hong Kong. He is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the
Master of Public Administration Programme at the Department of Politics
and Public Administration in the University of Hong Kong with extensive
experience in the policy-making processes through his former role as a
Consultant, Part-time Member, and Research and Planning Director(on
secondment) of the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong Government. He
first joined the SNU ISI faculty in 2013 and will bring his extensive knowledge
to his course, “China’s Political Economy,” for the third consecutive year.

Chinese Foreign Policy
Feng Zhu
Nanjing University
Professor ZHU began his undergraduate studies at the Department of
International Politics at Peking University in 1981 and received his PhD. from
Peking University in 1991. He is a professor in the School of International
Studies at Peking University and executive director of the Collaborative
Innovation Center for South China Sea Studies at Nanjing University.
Concurrently, Zhu serves as senior advisor to President Wang Jisi of the
Center for International & Strategic Studies (CISS) at Peking University. Zhu
is a leading Chinese expert on East Asian security, and his research interests
include regional security in East Asia, North Korea nuclear issues, China-U.S.
relations and Chinese security policy
Culture and Society of Korea
Shin-Kap Han

After holding professorship at Cornell University and University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, Professor Han joined SNU in 2010 to become one of the
most sought-out professors in the Department of Sociology at SNU. His
specialization includes a wide range of topics, from social networks, work
and life story, culture consumption; history, theory, and methodology of
sociology, and has a very extensive list of publications that speak for his
expertise in all. The breadth of his knowledge in all areas of society gives him
a clear advantage in helping students maneuver the complex and diverse
topics dealt in “Culture and Society of Korea.”

Economic Geography

Douglas Roger Gress
Sem Vermeersch
Professor Gress received his Master’s and PhD degrees at the State
University of Buffalo, in International Economics and Business and Economic
Geography, respectively. Since joining Seoul National University in 2003, he
has received multiple Research Excellence Awards and has consistently
exceeded university standards for teaching excellence. Professor Gress is
also one of the longest standing SNU ISI faculty member, and 2015 will be
his 5th year with SNU ISI. Specializing in the fields of economic geography,
regional and world geography, culture and international business, economic
globalization and spaces of technology and innovation, he has been sharing
his expertise in various facets, including contributions to the National Atlas
of Korea, the Korean Economic Geography Society, Korean Geography
Society, and the Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Education, Science
and Technology of Korea.
Professor Vermeersch is one of the leading scholars in Korean studies at
Seoul National University. Currently an Associate Professor at the
Department of Religious Studies and the Associate Director for the
International Center for Korean Studies within the Kyujanggak Institute for
Korean Studies at Seoul National University, he teaches a variety of courses
on Korean religions, culture and traditions. His main specialization is in
Buddhism in Korea and East Asia, with a focus on the Koryŏ Dynasty. His
book, The Power of the Buddhas: The Politics of Buddhism During the Koryŏ
Dynasty, 918-1392 (Harvard University Press) received the James B. Palais
Book Prize.

Professor Yoo is a full professor at College of Business Administration at
Seoul National University. Before joining Seoul National University, he was a
assistant professor at Korea University and Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology. His research interests are B2B e-commerce, online auctions
and pricing strategies of digital goods such as software products and online
games and has published on these topics in journals such as Management
Science, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Support
Systems, and the International Journal of Electronic Commerce. He has
consulting experiences with Korea Stock Exchange, Korea Association of
Game Industry and other companies by measuring the impacts of
information systems and online transactions, and suggesting how to use
information systems strategically.

John B. Duncan
University of California, Los Angeles
Professor Duncan is a professor at the Department of Asian Languages and
Cultures at UCLA. His groundbreaking research and publications in Korean
studies were recognized by the Korean Foundation(2009) and Manhae
Foundation in Korea (2010). Undoubtedly one of the top experts in Korean
studies in the world, he has written four books and countless articles on
Korean premodern history and society, and is the Editor-in-Chief for the
International Journal of Korean History. SNU ISI has had the honor of having
Professor Duncan as one of the faculty members since 2010, when “History
of Premodern Korea” was first offered at SNU ISI. The course is one of the
favorite courses among SNU ISI students over the past five years.
Financial Management
Woojin Kim
Seoul National University
Professor Kim is Associate Professor of Finance at Seoul National University
Business School. Prior to joining SNU in 2011, he worked at Korea University
Business School and KDI School of Public Policy and Management. His main
research focuses on corporate finance especially corporate governance and
control-related issues in emerging market business groups. He has published
in the Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of
Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management,
and Journal of Financial Markets in the areas of empirical corporate finance
and security analysts. He also worked with the Korean government and
currently serves in advisory committee for regulating large business groups
and capital market integrity.

Human Rights Issues in East Asia
Bumsoo Kim
Seong Ho Sheen
After completing both his Master’s and PhD degrees in Political Science at
the University of Chicago, Professor Kim joined Seoul National University in
2006 and is currently Professor of Political Science, College of Liberal
Studies, SNU and a Visiting Professor of the Jackson School of International
Studies, University of Washington. Professor Kim was also a foreign research
scholar at the Institute of Social Science, the University of Tokyo and has
also taught at the University of Chicago, Chungang University (Seoul, Korea)
and many other Korean universities. His areas of interest are political theory,
and ethnic and racial studies, with a focus on multiculturalism, democracy,
equality and justice, group and identity politics. He is one of the beloved
professors at SNU ISI, for his interesting classes and excellent teaching.
Professor Sheen is Professor of International Security and East Asia, and
Associate Dean for Office of International Affairs in SNU. He also works as
Managing Editor for Journal of International and Area Studies (JIAS)
published by Institute of International Affairs (IIA), SNU. He was a visiting
fellow at the East-West Center DC, a CNAPS fellow at the Brookings
Institution, an assistant research professor at Asia-Pacific Center for Security
Studies (APCSS), Honolulu, Hawaii and a research fellow at Institute for
Foreign Policy Analysis (IFPA), Cambridge, Mass, the U.S. He has also taught
at Univ. Mass Boston and advised various government organizations
including ROK National Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
Ministry of Unification and Committee on Foreign Affairs and Unification,
the ROK National Assembly.

Professor Park is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the
Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul
National University. He specializes in political theory with a focus on classical
and international political thought. He will be sharing his passion for classical
western political thought by reviewing how the “ideas” of human rights can
be understood in the context of East Asia through the original texts of
modern western political thought.
Industrial Policy in South Korea and Beyond
Min Gyo Koo
Seoul National University
Currently an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Public
Administration, Professor Koo specializes in East Asian economic
regionalism and international trade and industrial policy, as well as being an
expert on East Asian island disputes and international maritime regimes.
Aside from several book chapters, he has published his research in a wide
range of journals, including The Pacific Review, Pacific Affairs, European
Journal of East Asia Studies, Global Asia, Harvard Asia Quarterly, and Journal
of East Asian Studies. For the last four consecutive years, he taught
“International Industrial and Trade Policy” at SNU ISI, a course which was
highly favored by students. For the coming summer, he will bring greater
focus on South Korea in his new SNU ISI course, “Industrial Policy in South
Korea and Beyond.”

Professor Yoon is Professor of international political economy at
Department of Political Science and International Relations, Seoul National
University. After serving as Chairman of Committee of Foreign Relations,
Security, and Unification of Presidential Transition Team, he served as
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Korean government (2003-04).
He established and served as the president of the Korean Institute for Future
Strategies and the Korea Peace Institute, private non-profit research
institutes. He published several books and about 60 articles in the field of
international political economy, Korea’s foreign policy, and inter-Korean
relations, some of which appeared in World Politics, International Political
Science Review, Asian Survey, Project Syndicate, etc.

Bong-Ki Moon
Seoul National University
Before joining the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at
Seoul National University, Professor Moon taught extensively as professor at
the University of Arizona. His current areas of research are XML indexing and
query processing, flash memory based high performance database servers,
and information streaming and dissemination. He served as the Associate
Editor for IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering from Fall
2005 to Spring 2010, as Information Director for ACM Transactions on
Internet Technology from October 2000 to September 2007, among many
other notable positions in journals and international conferences.

Euiyoung Kim
Wujin Chu
Professor Kim is Professor of Political Science and International Relations
and Director of Institute for Korean Politics at Seoul National University. He
is also Director of Program on Democracy and Economic Development at
SNU Asia Center and the current Vice President of the Korean Political
Science Association. He previously worked at Kyung Hee University, where
he was Professor of Political Science and International Relations and Dean of
Office of International Affairs, as well as the Secretary General of World Civic
Forum, a joint initiative of UN DESA and Kyung Hee University.
Professor Chu currently serves as Associate Dean for MBA Programs and
Professor of Marketing. After receiving his PhD in Marketing at the Wharton
School, he had joined MIT as Assistant Professor and later, UC-Berkeley as
Visiting Associate Professor. His primary research interest is in application of
economic models to marketing phenomena, particularly in channels of
distribution. He has published numerous articles in Marketing Science, the
Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Organization
Science and the Journal of International Business Studies. In 2003, he was
cited by the Journal of Marketing Education as the second-ranked professor
in the Asia Pacific region in terms of research performance and in 2010, he
was selected to receive the JIBS Decade Award, which is given to the most
influential paper published in JIBS ten years after publication, for his paper
on the global automobile industry.

Young Sik Kim

Young Sik Kim is Professor of Economics at Seoul National University and
affiliated with the SNU Institute of Research for Finance and Economics
(SIRFE). He also taught at the University of Iowa in the U.S. and at the
Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. His research interests
include key issues in monetary economics and macroeconomics. He has had
publications in the Journal of Monetary Economics, Economic Journal,
Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Review of Economic Dynamics, and
Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.

Chris Baumann
Macquarie University
Dr. Baumann is a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney,
Australia. His research includes customer loyalty, competitiveness in
education and society, Confucianism, ethnic marketing, and East Asia (China
and Korea). He has in excess of 50 publications in international journals and
conference proceedings. He has been awarded several times for his research
and teaching, including from the Australian government for his enthusiastic
approach to education and the Best Reviewer Award at the Academy of
International Business (AIB) Conference in 2010. He has been appointed as a
Visiting Professor at Seoul National University (SNU) in South Korea and
previously at Aarhus University in Denmark. Prior to academia, Dr. Baumann
worked for several years in the Swiss banking industry.

Jung Joo Jahng

Professor Jahng is Professor of Information Systems at the College of
Business Administration, Seoul National University. Prior to joining SNU in
2000, he was a faculty member at Lally School of Management &
Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests are in
the domains of e-Business, IT strategy, and IT-based innovation. His research
has appeared in a number of journals such as IEEE Transactions on Systems,
Man, and Cybernetics; the European Journal of Information Systems; the
Journal of Information Technology; and the E-Service Journal. He also has a
number of years of real-world IT experience in South Korea. Dr. Jahng won
the first Stafford Beer Award from OR Society, London, UK in 2004 for the
best paper published in the European Journal of Information Systems in 2002.
One of his research papers was also nominated as one of the best papers in
the AMCIS 1999 Conference.

Cheol Hee Park
Hilary Finchum-Sung
Professor Park is Professor of Japanese Studies at the Graduate school of
International Studies and the Director of the Institute for Japanese Studies at
Seoul National University. Japanese politics, Korea-Japan relations, and
international relations in East Asia. He also served as a visiting professor at
Columbia University, Keio University and Kobe University. He has published
extensively including two books and numerous articles in Korean, Japanese,
and English in various journals, including Asian Survey, Japanese Journal of
Political Studies, Asia-Pacific Review, etc. He is also serving as a policy adviser
to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Unification Ministry and also advises
Korea-Japan Parliamentary League, Joint Committee for Korea-Japan
Cooperation, and Korea-Japan Friendship Society. He is a columnist at
Chosun Ilbo and Tokyo Shimbun. He received the First Nakasone Yasuhiro
Award in 2005 in recognition of academic activities and practical
contribution to the friendly ties between South Korea and Japan.
Professor Finchum-Sung is the Chair of the Interdisciplinary Major in Music
Education at Seoul National University and former adjunct professor at
University of San Francisco. She serves as a member of advisory boards for
the Korea Foundation and Arts Council Korea and has published
internationally in Ethnomusicology, the world of music (new series), and
Seoul Journal of Korean Studies. She has presented papers in the US, China,
Canada, Japan and Korea as well as lectures and workshops for the National
Gugak Centre, National Theatre of Korea, and UNESCO. She regularly
practices and performs on the two-string spike fiddle, haegeum. In the 2015
SNU ISI program, her previous course, “Korean Music,” will be newly
structured into a 3-credit course to give students to more depth and breadth
of knowledge on Korean traditional music as well as hands-on experience
and practice in performing traditional instruments. She will be teaching the
course with Assistant Lecturer, Yu-Seok Kim, an experienced theorist and
lecturer, with years of experience in arts administration, performance
planning and promotion, and translation.

Professor Song is Assistant Professor of International Studies at the
Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University, since
September 2014. Professor Song has earned her Ph.D. from the Government
Department at Harvard University in 2008. Prior to coming to Seoul National
University, she was Assistant Professor of Political Science and International
and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma from 2009 to 2013, and she
also taught at Sogang University (Seoul, Korea) from 2013 to 2014. Professor
Song’s research interests lie in comparative and international political
economy, political economy of East Asia, labor markets, social welfare
policies, and international development and cooperation. Professor Song is
an author of Inequality in the Workplace: Labor Market Reform in Japan and
Korea (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2014).

Professor Lee is Professor of International Relations and Associate Dean at
the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University. He
is also currently President of an independent think tank, Mirezi. He also
served as President of an independent think tank, Korea Institute for Future
Strategies from 2003-2007. His publications include “The Clash of Soft Power
between China and Japan”(2010), “A Theory of Soft Power and Korea’s Soft
Power Policy”(2009), “A Soft Power Approach to the Korean Wave”(2009),
“The Nexus between Korea’s Regional Security Options and Domestic
Politics”(2009), and co-authored The Environmental Dimension of Asian
Security (2007). He is active in many roles outside the academia including
serving as Consulting Committee Member for Korea’s Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Defense, National Congress, and Presidential
Committee for Vision Planning.

Professor Baek teaches theory and history of architecture and urbanism as
Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Architectural
Engineering, Seoul National University. He earned his Bachelor of Science
from Seoul National University, Master of Architecture degree from Yale
University, and completed his Ph.D. in the history and theory of architecture
at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on cross-cultural
issues between modern East Asian architecture and Western architecture,
environmental ethics based upon phenomenology, and contemporary
regenerative urbanism. He is the author of Nothingness: Tadao Ando’s
Christian Sacred Space (Routledge, 2009) and of articles published in leading
architectural and philosophical journals.

Professor Kim is Humanities Korea Professor at the Institute for Peace and
Unification Studies (IPUS) at Seoul National University. He received his PhD
in Sociology from Rutgers University. Professor Kim had formerly served as a
senior fellow and director of North Korean Studies Division at government
funded research institute, Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU). He
is the author of Flexible and Complex Unification (2010), New Approach and
Strategy toward National Community Unification Formula (2010), Formation
and Structure of Socioeconomic Network between North Korea and China
(2008), and Evaluation on Sustainability of North Korean System (2006).
Professor Lim is a Professor at the Department of Political Science and
International Relations, Seoul National University. She previously taught at
the University of California, Davis, where she undertook her doctoral
research. She specializes in comparative politics, East Asian and
international political economy , and feminist politics. She currently serves
as the Vice Chair for the Korean Political Science Association and a member
of the Board for the Korean Association of International Studies. Formerly,
she was the Director of the Institute of Korean Politics at SNU(2010-2012),
visiting fellow at Brookings Institute (2007-2008), and has advised Korea’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2004-2007) and National Security Council (2002).
Sung-Yoon Lee

Professor Lee is Kim Koo-Korea Foundation Professorship of Korean Studies
and Assistant Professor at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts
University. Lee is Associate in Research at the Korea Institute, Harvard
University, and a former Research Fellow of the inaugural National Asia
Research Program, a joint initiative by the National Bureau of Asian
Research and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
His essays on the international politics of the Korean peninsula and
Northeast Asia have been published multiple times in the LA Times, New
York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, CNN.com, Asia Times, The
Weekly Standard, and Foreign Policy, etc. He has testified as an expert
witness before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign
Affairs Hearing on North Korea policy and has advised senior officials and
elected leaders in the U.S. government, including the President of the
United States of America.

Professor Park is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science
and International Relations, Seoul National University. Before joining SNU,
he taught as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago. He received
his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests
include International Political Economy and Political Methodology. He
received the Harold Gosnell Prize in 2010 for his work, “Joing Modeling of
Dynamic and Cross-sectional Heterogeneity”, a prize awarded to the best
work in political methodology presented at any political science conference
in the year, awarded by the Society for Political Methodology.

The Multilateral Trading System and Trade Integration in the Asia-Pacific
Taeho Bark
Seoul National University
Professor Bark is Professor and former Dean of the Graduate School of
International Studies (GSIS) at Seoul National University. He served Minister
for Trade of the Korean government (2011-2013). Prior to coming to SNU,
Professor Bark taught at Georgetown University, worked as a senior
research fellow of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) and served as the
Vice President of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy
(KIEP). During 2000-2002, Dr. Bark served Chair of the Investment Expert
Group (IEG) of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). He taught at
Sciences Po, Stanford University and University of Washington as a visiting
professor. In addition, he was a visiting scholar at the IMF and consulted for
the World Bank. He has written a few books and many articles on
international trade, foreign direct investment and the Korean economy.
Two Koreas: Modern Korean History and Society
Tae Gyun Park
Seoul National University
Tae Gyun Park is Professor of Korean Studies at the Graduate School of
International Studies and the Director of the Sochon Korean Studies Center
under the Institute of International Studies, Seoul National University. He
also works as editorial board member of Pacific Affairs, University of British
Columbia. Professor Park was a Visiting Fellow and Special Student (19971999) and Coordinate Researcher (2007-2008) at Harvard-Yenching Institute,
during the latter which he taught “Modern Korean History.” He was also
Visiting Scholar at Kyushu University, Japan, in 2005-2006 and worked as an
advisor for Ministry of Unification in 2012-2013. He has written for major
Korean newspapers as columnist , including his current column in Hankyoreh
newspaper. He has published multiple books on Korean history and
development policy, as well as many articles both in Korean and English.
Namhee Lee
University of California, Los Angeles
Professor Lee is Associate Professor of modern Korean history at UCLA. She
is the author of The Making of Minjung: Democracy and the Politics of
Representation in South Korea (Cornell University Press, 2007) as well as of a
number of articles on Korean historiography, on Park Chung Hee period, and
on social memory and historical novels and films. She is currently working on
a book project tentatively titled “Social Memory and Public History in South
Korea,” which explores contemporary production of historical knowledge
through examining the debates, tensions, and exchanges generated from
historical novels, films, museum exhibitions, festivals, historical restorations
(or destructions), and other civic movements.
