This is an unprecedented time to be in the beef industry. The past year has generated record revenue for cattle
producers. A favorable growing season over most of North America has lead to a bountiful corn, soybean and wheat
harvests and lower feed costs than we’ve seen in a number of years. Cattle inventory is the lowest it’s been since the
early 1950’s and is limiting how much beef is being put into the food supply. Cheap feed grains and low cattle numbers
equals increased value to the producers. Enjoy these next couple of years!
Don’t forget to submit your herd info to the ASA or CSA. FSFF members need to report as much data, such as
calving ease, weaning weight, yearling weight, feedlot data, and carcass data (ultrasound or actual grading), as possible. This is one of the ways we, as members, can improve our genetic standing within the Simmental breed. In this
current economic condition of cattle production, it is easy to forget we are all part of the meat production supply.
As breeders of these awesome Fleckvieh cattle, we need to continue to improve our individual breeding programs.
Be mindful of your trait selections and the impact they will have on your cattle as well as the breed. Focus on one or two
areas that need improvement, and stick with the plan. Year in and year out, you will be improving your herd quality and
your bottom line. Be mindful of the fundamentals that have lead to the present financial success for cattle producers.
This is also an excellent time to dig deep into your culling program. Over the next couple of years you will be glad you
did.
I personally want to invite you to join this organization to support Fullblood genetics within the Simmental Fleckvieh breed. We need everyone pushing toward energizing each other and supporting each other in promotion! This is
YOUR organization. Please communicate any concerns or ideas to your board members. Visit with your neighbors, and
encourage them to consider Fullblood genetics, for the first time or again.
My family and I live in North Dakota, so I can’t close this without saying ‘Go Bison’! We have been witness to one of
the most successful football programs in the nation. North Dakota State University has won three consecutive national
football championships and is striving for another. In the spirit of competition I say, ‘The March Is On’ to an exciting and
very rewarding year in cattle and the FSFF!

A heartfelt “Congratulations” goes to Dr. Mikell Davis of Little Creek Farm, LLC.
“Doc” as many know him, was nominated and voted as the 2013 recipient of the
FSFF Fred Schuetze Award. The award, as it was intended, goes to a producer who
is committed to the promotion of the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh breed. If, however, the award encompassed other criteria like humanity, ethics, or philanthropy,
there would be no lack support for recognition either.
Fleckvieh cattle have been roaming the pastures of Little Creek Farm since the
early 1990s, and it would be understatement to say that there have been only a few
“Good Ones” in the mix. Great Fullblood foundation cows like Great Guns Cherie,
BEL Helga 9th, HVR Perfect Penny, KFFC Jumbo Hafke, and many more have been
included. Such animals have given way to exceptional animals like Little Creek Grace
39G, LCF Winsome 690W, Little Creek Kimble 204K, LCF Exalter 020X, and now Little
Creek Xpress 840X, to name just a few.
Those that know the breeding program at Little Creek Farm know it is not uncommon to hear of bulls like Antonius, Great Guns Pauli, Iglhoff, or Siegfried being used. Selective mating using the best of the
“old” genetics with the best of the “new” genetics has made Little Creek animals very marketable, not only within the circle of
Fullblood breeders, but also to numerous crossbred and commercial producers.
While Doc has devoted much of his time to building his cattle herd over the last two decades, he has not lost sight of what
it is to be a family man, an active community member, and an asset to the veterinary profession. Doc has remained insistent
that family be a priority, commonly attending sports functions involving he and Mary Cheek’s grandchildren or hosting family
dinners.
Doc served as a professor at Mississippi State University and Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Numerous students, many who would later become veterinarians, had the pleasure of being taught anatomy and physiology
by Dr. Davis. Additionally, Doc was responsible for breaking the ground and initiating the current veterinary technician professional program at MSU-CVM. Finally, Dr. Davis and Mary Cheek are the benefactors of two endowments at Mississippi State
College of Veterinary Medicine, one in feline medicine and one in beef cattle production. The endowments provide funding for
staff to further the study and development of information relative to those areas of veterinary medicine.
So, while many of us know Dr. Davis for his work as an exceptional breeder of Fleckvieh cattle, it certainly is evident he has
done so much more!
2013 Fred Schuetze Award Recipient
The recipient of this year’s FSFF Fred Schuetze Award goes to Dr. Billy S.
Moore of Huntsville, Alabama. Congratulations!
Dr. Moore is a native of Fayetteville, Tennessee area. He and his wife, Mrs.
Trudy Moore, purchased their cattle operation, known as Moore Farms, in 1973.
He has been a Simmental breeder since 1974, when he began breeding 7/8
Simmental bulls to second calf Angus heifers; the results created his passion for
Simmentals! Dr. Moore converted to Purebred Simmentals in the mid 1980’s and
then began concentrating on Fleckvieh Simmentals in the early 1990s because of
their popularity and an existing worldwide demand.
In the past, Moore Farms has run as many as 80 Simmental cows. These numbers have been recently reduced due to drought and to allow for the concentration on select Fleckvieh genetics.
2014 Fred Schuetze Award Recipient
Dr. Moore has been deeply involved in the beef industry organization. He has
served as an officer and director for the Alabama Simmental Association, the Madison County Cattleman’s Association, the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association and the North Alabama bull evaluation center. In 2004, The Alabama Cattleman’s Association presented Moore Farms with its prestigious, “Seed Stock Producer
of the Year” award. Dr. Moore was a founding member of the American Fullblood Simmental Marketing group which is now
known as the Fullblood Simmental Fleckvieh Federation.
Dr. Moore & Mrs. Trudy have two grown children, Cindy and Jack, both of whom live within 20 miles of the farm. Cindy
is a substitute teacher and is married to Dane Richardson, a mechanical engineer for the Boeing Company. They have two
children, a son, Austin, and a daughter, Savannah. Jack is an orthopedic surgeon in Huntsville. He and his wife, Andrea, have
three children: Maci, Jackson and Tinsley.
To sum it up, Dr. Moore is a dedicated family man, an active church member, a friend and a dedicated cattle breeder. It
is our honor to award to him the 2014 FSFF Fred Schuetze Award for his continued support of Fleckvieh cattle.
