CONCRETE HIGH SCHOOL
Senior Class of 2015

The Senior Class of 2015 is rapidly
ﬁnishing up on portfolios, job shadows,
and volunteer hours needed to graduate in
the State of Washington. Job shadow and
volunteer hours should have been ﬁnished
by December 15, 2014. Portfolios are due
to Mrs. Straathof by January 7, 2015 and
then will be distributed for grading using the
pass/fail grading system with a minimum
of 60% to pass. Senior presentations will
be held in February 2015 where students
present their career and 13th year plan to
a panel of judges from the community and
the school district.
Seniors always have expenses their
senior year dealing with graduation in June.
Students should already have their cap and
gown secured with Jostens, Inc. If they
don’t, they need to see Mrs. Straathof right
away. Other expenses include graduation
invitations, pictures, and the senior trip.
Seniors should check with their senior
class advisor if they need assistance with
any of this.
Students are working hard to meet all of
their graduation requirements. I encourage
parents of seniors to work with their child
on life after high school plans and career
choices.
We are all rooting on the Class of 2015
to be the best that they can be!
2nd Grade
Community Garden
Field Trip
By Hallie Elms, 2nd Grade Teacher
This year our school is involved
with the “Farm to School” Program.
The focus is using locally grown
foods to bolster local economy and
for children to eat the healthiest foods
around.
In working with this program,
teachers can sign up for “special ﬁeld
trips.” Mrs. Elms’ 2nd grade class
walked to the community garden in
Concrete on October 14th to help
plant garlic in the garden. Great job!

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP
Fun Day in PJ’s
Concrete Elementary School is
accepting kindergarten registrations for
the 2015-2016 school year beginning
Monday, February 9, 2015. Students
MUST be 5 years of age by August 31st
to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
Parents must provide complete copies
of their child’s birth certificate and
immunization records before the ﬁrst
day of school. Please call the elementary
school at (360) 853-8145 for more
information.

Fair” on February 10,
2015 from 9:00am to
1:00pm in the high
school commons.
Representatives
from the military, skills
center, community colleges,
universities, and local businesses will
have display tables set up and will be
available to answer any questions you
may have. Parents are also welcome to
attend.

These boxes are all full of compressed cans out of the school
kitchen. Jon and Robert load them in the car and take
them to the garbage dump where they unload and recycle
them. During late start days at school, they also come in
early and load the cardboard from the high school kitchen
and then they take it to Albert’s after school where they
unload it and it is put into bales. The school has about
two bales each time.

WINTER SPORTS ASSEMBLY 12/5/14
On December 5th the CHS leadership class hosted
the Winter Sports Assembly. Each winter sport was
represented in a friendly game of bump. Tyler LaBrousse
beat out Kelse Cargile to become the reigning champion.
We also had a game of shark and Riley Fichter ﬁnished
ﬁrst by slithering his way across the gym. The dance
competition had many competitors getting their groove
on. The competition ended with a dance off between
Jesse Stewart and Tavish Beals, with Jesse pulling out
the win by bringing back his rendition of the worm. The
day ended with the freshmen winning the coveted toilet
seat in the spirit competition.

ACCESSING
SCHOOL DELAYS/
CLOSURE
INFORMATION
We are approaching the time of year
when the weather can change quickly.
The bus drivers are reviewing with their
students the importance of having a safe
place to wait for their buses. Icy roads
can cause slippery situations. When a bus
approaches a bus stop to pick up students on
icy roads, even the slightest application of
brakes can cause the back of the bus to slide.
Students need to stay back and not approach
the bus until the bus is completely stopped
and the driver has opened the door. The
open bus door will be the signal for students
that it is safe to board the bus. Please go
over this information with your children.
Concrete School District has an automated
system in place (SchoolMessenger) to
automatically call families of our students
in the event of emergency school closures,
late start, and student absences. If you have
a cell phone and would like to be contacted
via cell, please contact your child’s school
with your cell phone number. In the event
of a delay or closure you should receive an
automated call.
Concrete School District is also a
member of the Puget Sound Emergency
Communications System. Please use the
following chart to ﬁnd our local radio and
television channels that carry our district
information in the event of a school delay
or closure. They will also list certain roads
or areas that will not receive bus service
that day.

What is a Child Find Screening?
HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM
Screening is a free check of your child’s development
including:
· Large muscle development
· Eye-hand coordination (ﬁ ne motor skills)
· Communication
· Concepts
· Personal-social skills
· Self-help skills
What is the purpose of a Child Find Screening?
The purpose of the screen is to identify any factors that
may interfere with your child’s learning, growth, and
development. The screening is also provided to help
parents identify their child’s strengths and weaknesses
and provide home suggestions.
What happens during a Child Find Screening?
During the screening, your child may stack small blocks,
cut with a scissors, draw, count, name colors, jump, and
have fun! Following the screening, a trained professional
will talk with you about the results of the screening.
You will have the opportunity to ask any questions
about your child’s development. You may be given
home suggestions, referred on for further testing, or be
scheduled to have skills rechecked at a later date. The
screening process usually takes about 45 minutes.
Who is eligible to be screened?
Any child, birth to age ﬁve, whose family or care
givers would like more information about their child’s
development. All school districts within Washington
State have Child Find screenings available. If your family
is living in a temporary situation, you may contact the
district where you are staying to attend a screening.

CHILD FIND
Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness
activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate,
identify and refer as early as possible all young children
with disabilities and/or children who meet the McKinneyVento deﬁ nition of homeless. If you know of a child who
lives within the Concrete School District who is newly
born to ﬁve years old and who might need special education services, or children who might be homeless, please
contact Leilani Thomas, Special Services Director at
360-853-8116.
A highly capable (HC) learner is deﬁ ned as “a student
who has been assessed to have superior intellectual
ability as exhibited by cognitive ability, speciﬁc academic
achievement, and exceptional creativity” (OSPI, 2009).
It offers enrollment to students K-12. Students can be
referred to this program by education staff, teachers, and
parents. A referral to the program does not guarantee
enrollment. Parents are required to give written
permission before testing, identifying, and placement.
Highly capable students will be required to participate
in several different types of tests. Testing will include
but is not limited to the Woodcock Johnson IV, Kaufman
Brief Intelligence Test 2 (KBIT2), and SIGS. Tests will be
administered by the school psychologist. Additional data
will be collected for review: grades, state assessments and
district assessments.
Students identiﬁed as highly capable will be taught by
highly capable teachers who will individualize their
instruction to accommodate the educational needs of
the identiﬁed students. Students enrolled in the highly
capable program may be provided opportunities for
accelerated learning, grouping arrangements that provide
intellectual and interest peer group interactions, K-12
cooperative agreements between schools and institutions
of higher education, and/or mentorships and career

TITLE 1A & LAP PROGRAMS
Title I, Part A is a federal program that serves the unique
needs of children — kindergarten to grade 12 — who
struggle to learn. Title I programs and services enrich
time at school with customized instruction and curricula
that helps these students meet academic standards and
take an active, engaged interest in what they learn and can

LAP (Learning Assistance Program) programs serve
eligible students who need academic support for reading, writing, math, or who need readiness skills to learn
these core subjects. With special emphasis on reading
literacy in the early grades, schools use their state LAP
funds to deliver supplemental services that give these
students the strong start they need for academic success.
