Tickets $10 ONE ANOTHERING… “Why did the horse need soap?” I’ve always had fun with what I call “looney lyrics.” Said a few myself. The technical word is “mondegreens:” Words to songs we can’t understand. So we fill in the blanks. We do that with people too and predictably, it frequently comes up looney. Christmas songs are not exempt. Some of it comes from unfamiliarity with the context. In a song, it’s hard to tell the context. If the words are smothered by loud background music or jumbled together on the wrong ak-sent, we fill in the blanks, mostly inaccurate but always funny once you learn the real thing. Some of it comes from inexperience. When I was a kid before I had the word “civil” in my vocabulary, I thought the war-between-the-states was “The Silver War.” I thought they were fighting over silver! Maybe in some ways they were. If us southerners had just picked our own cotton! Modern pop groups are notorious for being misunderstood. Before my kids corrected me, I used to sing the Rolling Stones song “I’ll Never Be Your Pizza Burger.” (Beast of Burden). The best one of all time has to be Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “There’s the bathroom on the right.” (Bad Moon on the Rise). Elvis’ “Don’t be Cruel” came out “Well its-a 1’oclock, 2 o’clock threech!” (Walk up to the preacher). The best of the Beatles: “The girl with Kaleidoscope Eyes,” “the girl with colitis goes by.” Abba? “See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen.” (diggin.’) Even the hymnal is not unscarred: “Ride on O Kinky Turtle.” (King Eternal). A dentist’s hymn: “Crown Him with Many Crowns.” Contractor’s hymn: “The Church’s One Foundation.” Politicians get one: “Standing on the Promises.” (Yeah right!) For the IRS: “I Surrender All.” And the gossips: “Pass it On.” Electricians: “Send the Light.” Shoppers: “Sweet Buy & Buy.” Massage Therapist: “He Touched Me.” In the Garden: “Andy walks with me.” (Who is Andy?) Now for the Christmas ones. First in Espanol: “Fleas naughty dog.” (Feliz Navidad). “O what fun it is to ride, in a 1-horse soap and slay.” “He’s makin’ a list, chicken and rice!” Winter Wonderland. “Later on we’ll perspire as we drink by the fire.” The Rudolphies. “Rudolph the red-nosed stranger.” “Won’t you guard my slave tonight?” “You’ll go down in Listerine!” And of course there’s “Olive the other reindeer!” (Musta been Rudy’s gal). Frosty the snowman “is a ferret elf I say!” (Fairy tale they say). “On the 1 st day of Christmas my tulip gave to me.” It wouldn’t be complete without a racist one: “In the meadow we will build a snowman. We’ll pretend that he is sparse and brown.” Even the terrorists: “O tiny bomb, O tiny bomb” (Tannenbaum). “Get dressed ye married gentlemen.” “Deck the halls with poison ivy.” Or if you prefer, with “Buddy Holly.” I say we dedicate the carols to overweight Round John. “We 3 kings of porridge and tar.” “O Come froggy faithful!” “With the jelly toast proclaim,” (Angelic hosts). “Sleep in heavenly peas.” “While shepherd’s watched their socks by night.” “Joy to the world, the Lord has gum.” “He rules the world with Ruth and Grace.” For King Barney: “Noel, Noel, Barney’s the king of Israel.” Oops I almost forgot: “Round John virgin, mother and child.” All I gotta say is, I hope ya’ll have a sense of humor! Me? I love to laugh. It’s good for the soul. Br’er Dan AT EASE IN ZION: 2nd Mile Smiles: To Cam Williams for supporting those in hard places. Year-to-date pledge revenue is 3.2% below budget. We are prayerful that expected strong December pledge revenue will help us meet our pledge budget. Expenditures were over budget for the month due to higher spending in our media/music ministries, timing of missions spending and expected personnel costs associated with the recent additions. Year-to-date, income is $44,000 better than budget, with the revenue shortfall more than offset by lower personnel costs and ongoing financial expense favorability. Our balance sheet remains in a good position. You may notice that the accounting records indicated that we had a negative cash balance at the end of the month. This was strictly an accounting timing issue as November 30 th receipts were not deposited until December 1st. We deliberately work to keep only enough operating cash to meet our current needs. We are also working to finalize our 2015 pledge budget. If you have forgotten or misplaced your financial pledge to our church, please contact Carrie Tatman in the accounting office. Additionally, if you have any questions about the status of your 2014 pledges or Imagine pledges, please contact Carrie as well. I want to thank everyone who participated in any way since it’s inception in September of 2012. The total amount raised was $2,979.85. A special thanks to the fundraising team who in addition to assisting with the planning helped as follows: Cindy Giljames for creating the display, Marcia Higby for keeping the database and display board up to date, Euleta Jeffrey and Barbara Coe for making phone calls to thank our participants. God Bless! Kathy Milam Kitchen Angels It would take a lot of space to list and “thank” all of you that helped with the kitchen missions and events in 2014. Please know that you are appreciated and thanked. All of you have proven to be a blessing to me and fun to work with. From those who supported Tellico Joe, Friendship Kitchen, ACT Luncheon, Family Connection, Lunch Bunch, Advent Dinner, Recital Lunches, Mardi Gras, Ballet Group Meals, Spaghetti Suppers, Easter Brunch, Fine Arts Brunch, Appreciation Dinners, the Cookie bakers, the Bereavement Team who presided over Memorial gatherings, especially all the dishwashers who came at a few hours notice to help out; to the volunteers that make and serve coffee after both services 52 weeks a year – all of you play an important role in the life of our church. We are blessed to have you among us! Some of you have asked me how we are doing on the Spaghetti Suppers. The official figure from January through November is a profit of $7,809 – the unofficial figure for the month of December is a profit of $633.31 for a total of $8,442.31 for the year 2014. Thanks to all of you who support this event each month. KITCHEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Friendship Kitchen needs a volunteer to lead Cooking Team #3. Each team is responsible for the Friendship Kitchen meal (1st and 3rd Mondays) every other month or six times a year. The Friendship Kitchen also needs a volunteer to be the third person on one of the Friendship Kitchen routes. Some of our drivers have been driving their routes for several years and need a break. If you are available for either of the two listed needs please contact me at 458-0878. A Musical Note We thought You’d Want to Know… In 2011 the church commissioned a handbell anthem composed by Bill Ingram entitled “Joyful Praise and Celebration” (including Joy’s name and the name of our two handbell choirs). We are pleased to announce that the piece has been published by Red River Music. You can find it online at: https://www.handbellworld.com/music/ MusicPiece.cfm?Piece=15898. Dear CCTV Congregation, Our time among you as interim Pastor is moving along. Before any final decisions are made, Libby and I wanted to express our gratitude to the members of this church for the kindnesses, and encouragement that you showed to us during the holiday season. We are appreciative, especially having been here for such a short time. There is among us a gift of hospitality, namely, knowing how to make people feel at home. I have said on occasion, we don’t remember much of what someone says. And about half of what we see. But we’ll always remember how they make us feel. In that, this church excels! From Br’er Dan Dear CCTV Friends, We would like to thank everyone who said prayers, sent cards, and made visits to us this past year. Joe has had a very successful transplant. We thank good doctors and our Lord, Jesus Christ, for that. Love to All, Joe and Kay Klint Dear CCTV Church Members, Thank you for wrapping your arms around us this past two years of our grandson, Sean Karl’s illness. The prayers, cards and calls were such a comfort to us when he passed away November 16. God is good. God is Great. Love, Tom and Jerre Karl Dear Church, Reverend or pastor, Church committee, ladies and gentlemen. I take this opportunity to greet you in the name of the father, the son and of the holy spirit. We are fine and Lions kids feel happy and loved by you people. We also thank God for your lovely donation of fifty six thousand, five hundred and forty six Kenya shilling. (56,546). We are happy to inform you that the money has been used to put metal doors on both dormitories named Ruth dormitory and Paul dormitory. The dormitories had wooden doors, which I was advised to replace before the dormitories are re-opened after the closure because of bedbugs. So thank you very much. We all feel honored and blessed. The climate is hot now and many people are busy weeding, since we had a lot of rain. For us, we have a kitchen garden which have kales, tomatoes, and spinach for the children. I was happy to see your beautiful church and good uniforms for the church choir. You have good instrumentalist too. How I wish to come and sing with you since I am a singer. We are okay and ready for Christmas. Otherwise thanks so much including to the women who make the shawls. We have made some things too and when they visit us, they will see their effort. God bless you.
