PLAGIARISM POLICY
1 Definition - Cheating
Cheating is an attempt to deceive the assessor/Internal Verifier. It includes but is not
limited to situations when you:
1.1 communicate or attempt to communicate with a fellow student or individual who
is neither an invigilator nor member of staff.
1.2 attempts to introduce or consult during the examination any unauthorised
printed or written material, or electronic, calculating or information storage devices
3.3 impersonate or allow you to be impersonated.
2 Definitions - Plagiarism
2.1 Plagiarism occurs whenever you present as your own the results of another
person, whatever the medium (text, written or electronic, computer programmes,
data sets, visual images).
2.2 All assessed work including, examinations, assignments and Projects, must be
your own work and must acknowledge assistance given (including from fellow
students or supervisors) and the detailed input into the work from the major sources
involved.
2.3 The passing off of work of others as your work is plagiarism. Any quotation from
published or unpublished works of other persons including other candidates must be
duly acknowledged.
Teaching Staff Responsibility:
1. If teaching staff suspects plagiarism with examination work then the Internal
Verifier (IV) should be alerted immediately to the issue. IV will deal with it
depending on the severity of the plagiarism. If it is a minor offence such as the
student forgetting to include a resource in the bibliography or failing to cite a
small amount of text and the student can be given time to rectify this before

the exam deadline then this should be dealt with by the department. If it is
a more serious offence involving students copying work, collusion or major
sections of work plagiarised then the Course Director must be informed by the
IV. The college will then take appropriate action. In the majority of cases this
will involve informing the External Body of the offence.
