The goal of Parents as Partners in Mentoring is to empower parents by giving them the skills and supports needed to help their child reach their full potential. Parents are matched with trained, volunteer parent mentors who offer their knowledge and experience, provide guidance and emotional support, and serve as a valuable "been there before" resource to parents of children with a disability or special health need. The first parent mentor training workshop will be held in January 2015 in Davenport. For detailed information about this initiative, or to schedule a free parent mentor training workshop in your area, contact Paula Connolly, Family to Family Iowa Project Coordinator at ASK Resource Center, [email protected] or (515) 243-1713. February 4: (6:30pm-8pm): University of Iowa Children’s Hospital Autism Center Presents: Understanding Autism: Practical Help for Parenting Children with Autism 2015 Workshop Series “How to Change Challenging Behavior at Home Using Coaching through Telehealth” In this presentation, we will summarize the results of projects conducted directly in children’s homes, in regional outpatient clinics using telehealth, and in the children’s homes using telehealth. In all projects, parents, with coaching from trained applied behavior analysts, conducted functional analyses (FA) of their children’s problem behavior, then implemented functional communication training (FCT) to replace problem behavior with more appropriate communication. Parents across all projects achieved reductions in problem behavior of around 90% and rated the FA + FCT program as being very acceptable. A description and summary of these results will be presented along with video clips showing several parents working with their children. The speakers will be available for a question and answer session immediately following the presentation. In recent years information has centered on understanding this thinking style. In this presentation we will look at how Executive Functioning, Theory of Mind and Central Coherence skills impact thinking. These titles may sound daunting, but when understood clearly help us see why visual supports are so effective in helping individuals with ASD. Upon leaving, you will not only have a greater understanding of how your child sees the world (and why) but you will also walk out the door with tools ready to use. May 2, 2015 (8:00-5:00 pm): “Together We Can: Conference” Des Moines, Iowa Organized by ASK Resource Center For more information: http://www.askresource.org/events-trainings.html Support Groups / Events New Online Support Group: NAMI IOWA Casserole Club (NICC) To join, e-mail [email protected] and an e-mail invitation will be 8 sent to you. We are a support group of parents and caregivers of children with mental health needs in Iowa. This is a safe place to find support and understanding. We are not "Casserole moms" - as they say, that is, when your child is seriously physically ill, it is common for neighbors, friends, and community members to bring casseroles, offer to help, etc. But when your child has a serious mental illness or mental health crisis, people often do not know how to respond and often simply don't. So let us be a casserole club - let us offer those needed kind words of encouragement, a listening ear, and yes, maybe even from time to time casseroles! In supporting each other in times of crisis, we can model for our friends and communities how to help families dealing with mental illness and help them see that our needs are much the same - to be supported, and not isolated, when crisis occurs. Please feel free to invite others to join - this group is limited to those in Iowa who are primary care givers to children with childhood-onset mental illness / brain disorder. It includes foster parents, grandparents, relatives, etc., that are involved in the daily care of the child. This is a Facebook "secret" group with two purposes: 1) to be an online support group, 2) to help people network and form in-person support groups in their area. The "secret group" setting means that no one outside of the group can see our posts or who is in the group. It also means that people will not be able to search Facebook to find us. Any group member can invite another to join the group. All Iowa caregivers to children with mental health needs are welcome to join – so please spread the word. The video interviews are of national, state, tribal, and local leaders in many child-serving systems; developers of evidence-based treatments and practices; physicians; researchers; administrators of provider organizations; clinicians; youth and young adults; families; and advocates who share lessons learned and identify remaining gaps. Youth and their families provide client perspectives on the need for trauma-informed practices and the impact of traumainformed care on their lives. Stakeholders in selected states share lessons learned over a 1year period of intensive efforts to become more trauma informed. The issue briefs provide an introduction and overview for each of the tool’s eight modules.
