the ushers. Childcare is available for children 3 years and younger in our Nursery. During

Worship, children 4 years old through 3 graders are invited to attend our Children in
Worship service in Classroom 1 & 2. At the end of each pew is the “Blue Book” — please
take a moment to write down your name and address, e-mail and pass it along the pew and
then pass it back for all to know who is sitting next to them. Please greet your neighbors at
the close of service!
If you still have trouble hearing when using one of the new hearing devices, please make
sure that the volume is up on the unit and wait a moment before rendering the unit faulty.

Do you want to get a head start in preparing for Sunday worship? The Sunday bulletin is
posted on the Heritage website the previous Friday afternoon. A voice recording in mp3
format of Sunday’s sermon is posted online, normally by the same afternoon, at
www.HeritageChurchVA.org/sermons/.
You are invited to write your prayer requests (joys and concerns) on the prayer cards in
the pew racks. Please place them in the offering plate and they will be honored during the
Prayers of the People.
The term “voluntary” is used to denote a piece of music or improvisation for instrument,
played before, during, or at the end of a church service.
Baptism of the Lord Sunday is celebrated on the first Sunday after Epiphany. The baptism
of Jesus was a major event celebrated in the worship of the early church. The early church
fathers saw this event as significant in the saving action of Christ. Here the divine Sonship
of Christ is first announced, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased”
(Mathew 3:17). Furthermore, the descent of the Spirit on Jesus was seen then and now as
the anointing of Jesus for public ministry, suggesting that Jesus was baptized for those for
whom he would die. These themes are all captured in the appointed lessons for the day.

Please remember the family of Sylvia Wasylyk in your prayers as Sylvia died on December
28 after a long illness. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held here at 2:00 P.M.
on Saturday, January 24; with viewing beginning at 1:00 P.M. May the God of hope and
comfort surround them with peace and the sure hope of the resurrection as they mourn!
As we are in the height of the flu season, instead of shaking hands with one another, we
invite you to pass the Peace of Christ by simply nodding to each other, or touching
someone’s shoulder or upper arm; and using these words which have been around the
Church for the last 2,000 years: “The peace of Christ be with you….”
Hope & Healing — Please join us this afternoon at 5:00 P.M. for our monthly gathering in
the Sanctuary for about 45 minutes. Come for a time of worship and prayer. Come to leave
your burdens with God, have your hope renewed and your heart refreshed.
Pastors Class — The Pastors grow group will resume tomorrow, January 12, from 7:30 to
8:30 P.M. in the Library.
Supper, Talent & Variety Show! — Everyone is invited to participate and/or attend this funfilled evening on Friday, January 23. Start practicing, because this is your opportunity to tell
jokes, perform a skit or magic trick, juggle, sing, dance, play an instrument or whatever you’d
like. Please look for a sign-up poster in the church hallway. Supper will be served at 6:00
P.M. and the curtain rises at 7:00 P.M.
Session has scheduled the Annual Congregational Meeting for Sunday, January 25, at
12:30 P.M. As provided in Article 5.1 of our Corporate By-laws, “the Annual Congregational
Meeting shall also constitute the annual meeting of members of the corporation.” This will be
preceded by a Souper Luncheon.
The 2015 Per Capita contribution is $36.55 per member, a slight increase from 2014. For
convenience we suggest that you round up to an even $37. There is an offering envelop in
your boxes which you may use to designate your offering in support of Heritage’s
contribution to the administrative operations of the three councils of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) for a full year. Heritage supports the National Capital Presbytery, the Synod of the
Mid-Atlantic and the General Assembly. Thank you!
Chancel Flowers & Fellowship Time — As a new year begins, there are new opportunities
for you to sign up to donate flowers for the chancel on Sundays (in honor or in memory of a
loved one at the cost of $50) and to sponsor the Fellowship Time after a Sunday worship

Challenges for Prayer — For the first few weeks of
the year we will focus our prayers on the world in
general and continents/areas of the world before we
start prayers for specific countries (A will start with Afghanistan in February). This week, we will
be praying for Africa. The map displayed shows an equal area comparison of continents and
countries. Africa needs our prayers on many levels, however there has been tremendous growth
in Christianity in Africa and some experts predict the shift of Christianity's center from the
European industrialized nations to Africa and Asia in future times.
