Calvin Early Dodd passed peacefully
away at Rosewood Village on
Wednesday, December 3, 2014,
where he recently celebrated his
90th birthday, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 16, 1924 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is survived by his beloved
wife of 67 years, Virginia Belle Herron
Dodd. Calvin was a member of First
Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville
since the age of 5 and a proud founding member of the Rivanna Rifle and
Pistol Club. He was also a graduate
of Lane High School and a veteran of
World War II, where he served in the
United States Army. Calvin was a
salesman for both Fielding Auto Parts
and R.M. Davis auto dealership until
his retirement. Affectionately known
as "Boney" by family and close
friends, he will be remembered as a
charming southern gentleman who
loved fishing at his vacation home in
Deltaville. Donations in his memory

DIY Gunsmithing Workshop: 1911 Pistols
The next DIY Gunsmithing Workshops will
be on the 1911 Pistol. The 1911 pistol is
a broad enough subject that two sessions will be required. They will be held
on 28 Feb 2015, and 7 Mar 2015 from
12 PM to 4 PM in the RRPC clubhouse.
These sessions are restricted to 15 attendees. Each attendee is required to
attend both sessions to get the whole
workshop. The cost is $10 per attendee
per session. Attendees are required to
have a 1911 pistol for the hands on portion of the course.
The RRPC DIY Workshops are led by Pat-
rick Heraghty, owner of a local gunsmith
shop and a graduate of the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School’s Master Gunsmithing Program. The workshops are
geared towards giving members, and
their guests, who have a basic set of
tools the skills they need to work on
their own guns.
Any proceeds that are not used for the
workshop will go towards the maintenance of club firearms and / or the
youth program.

Ruger 10/22 Rifle Maintenance/Customization Workshop

Workshop fee: $5.00
Do you have a 10/22? Does it malfunction
too often? Do you find the bolt release frustrating? Have you never taken it fully apart
for a thorough cleaning of the action and
trigger group? Have you never cleaned your
magazines? Or have you wanted to
customize it with aftermarket parts
like an auto bolt release, extended
magazine release, or trigger upgrades, but don’t know how to install
them? If so, this workshop is for you.
This workshop will cover how to operate, fully strip, clean, lube, and reassemble your 10/22 rifle and magazines. You will learn about the typical
malfunctions and how to fix them. It is
a hands-on session in which you will
work on your own rifle with guidance
from knowledgeable coaches.
Bring your rifle, a rubber pad or large
towel to protect it on the table, and if
you have them, your tools including a
screwdriver and gunsmith punches. If
you don’t have tools, that’s ok.
SAFETY NOTE: No ammunition will be
allowed in the meeting room during
the workshop.

High-Power Rifle Matches
High-power rifle matches are held
on the first Saturday of every
month at RRPC. Two relays are
squaded for 9:00am and 11:00am
on a first-come basis. It’s recommended that you arrive at the
range by 8:00am to ensure a position in the first relay. Match entry
fee is $15.00. There’s also a
$5.00 target fee for anyone
choosing to practice on the second relay — however, competitors
take priority.

Lobby Day 2015
Governor McAuliffe has announced his
plans to move forward with several infringements on your right to keep and
bear arms. These include restrictions
on magazine size, limiting purchases of
handguns to one a month and rescinding the CHP of anyone who is late on
their child support. There are more
anti-self-defense items on the agenda
for this legislative session as well. If
you want to help prevent these proposals from becoming law, please join us
for Lobby Day 2015.

On Tuesday, January 13, 2015 we
will host our first VCDL meeting of the
new year. This may be the most important meeting of 2015 because we
will be discussing strategy for Lobby
Day, January 19, 2015.
Lobby Day is the single most important event that VCDL organizes. We
form groups and hand-deliver a legislative packet to every Delegate in the
General Assembly. This packet outlines VCDL’s position on all firearms
related bills introduced in the GA, but
more importantly it explains WHY a
bill is good or bad. Most of your rep-
resentatives really appreciate this.
They also respect the fact that you,
a busy private citizen, took time out
of your schedule to voice your opinion in person! Participation is easy,
even if you have never done anything like this before. You will be
paired with an experienced group
leader and the guided step by step.
This is your chance to influence the
fate of Virginia gun owners!
We will begin the VCDL meeting
with a potluck dinner at 6:30 followed by the meeting from 7:00—
9:00. Bring your family, friends
and neighbors. As always, the
main course and drinks will be provided. If you can bring a side dish
to share please do. If you can’t,
don’t worry there will be plenty to

Introduction to Skeet-Part 3 By Bob King, NSSA Level 1 Instructor
The last two months covered the
body mechanics and the three rules
of Skeet – Head on gun, Eye on target, proper lead. This month I’ll get
deeper into the hold point, the look
point, and methods to engage the
bird.
There are three ways to engage a
claybird. First is Swing Thru. Here
the bird gets past your barrel. You
speed up the barrel, passing thru the
bird, and executing the shot when
you have some daylight between your
barrel and the bird. This method is
most frequently used in hunting because the game bird, surprisingly,
does not come when you say
PULL. The problem is how much daylight? If you start chasing the bird
from just a little behind you will need
more daylight than if you start from
way behind the bird. It has to do with
what your barrel velocity is in relation
to the velocity of your target. With
lots and lots of practice you can get a
feel for the changing amount daylight
you need.

times. Your gun is already ahead of
the bird, and your eye position allows you to see the bird and start
swinging before the bird gets past
your barrel. You match bird speed
with barrel speed, make any minor
adjustment to get the lead, and then
execute the shot. The Sustained
Lead gives you wide latitude on
when to execute the shot and still
break the bird.
When should you break the
bird? Generally we try to shoot on
our half of the field, at or before
when the bird crosses the Center
Stake. Why? Four of the Skeet stations have Doubles, that is, simultaneous birds from both houses. If
you use your half of the field for the
first bird, and break it at or before
the Crossing Stake, the other bird
will be at or before the Crossing
Stake ON THE OTHER SIDE. That
means you’ll have the complete half
of a field to find and kill the second
bird. See how easy this game
is? The trick, of course, is where
The second method is the Pull you kill the first bird. If you kill it 10
Ahead. In this method you point the feet before the Crossing Stake, the
barrel at the bird, matching bird
speed with barrel speed. Just before
you shoot, you pull ahead to obtain
the correct lead and execute the
shot. Timing is critical here since you
don’t have an opportunity to correct
anything. Pull Ahead is frequently
used in Sporting presentations.
The third method, and the one used
by most champion caliber Skeeters,
is the Sustained Lead. You have a
hold point, typically one third of the
way from the Skeet house to the
Crossing Stake. Your look point is
somewhere between the Skeet
house and your hold point, with the
specific location based on your visual

gun ahead of it and match bird
speed with barrel speed. With practice, this becomes easier than you

The stations with Doubles are Station 1, Station 2, Station 6, and Station 7. On each of these stations
you will shoot a High single bird,
then a Low single bird, then the
Doubles. Since we are shooting
these birds on our half of the field,
we try to break the High single at or
before the Crossing Stake. For the
Low single, we break the bird at or
after it crosses the Crossing Stake
(so it is in our half of the field). For
Doubles, we break the outgoing bird
first (since it is already in our half of
the field), then break the incoming
bird when it enters our half of the
field. Shooting the second bird of
Doubles should not be significantly
different than shooting it when it
was an incoming single bird. As a
matter of fact, Doubles really is just
two closely spaced singles.

Skeet 5-Man Fun Match
The Richmond Gun Club will again
host the Skeet 5-man team fun shoot
on Sunday, March 29th, with the first
flight starting at 1000, and the second flight at 1300. The format is the
same as previous years where at
least one shooter on each squad has
to shoot the .410 bore, 28 ga, 20 ga
and 12 ga. The remaining shooter
can shoot what he wants. The fee
this year remains $25.00 per shooter
or $125.00 per team, and includes a
lunch. Each squad has to furnish a
referee for another squad. Last year
RRPC entered one squad, and UVA
put in a squad. UVA will be at the
Collegiate Nationals this year, but we
have the opportunity to enter a second squad. We have our five man
"A" team selected, and three mem-
bers of the "B" team. We need just
two more shooters to have our second squad complete. If you would

Skeet and Trap is shot every Sunday
from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or until
sunset throughout the year, weather
permitting. 5-Stand sporting clays is
shot the second Sunday of each
month in place of trap. Wobble trap
is also shot every Sunday on our wobble trap field.
The sport of Trap shooting is taught
and coached every Wednesday from

5-Stand – Sporting Clays Director
Tactical Shooters Group (TSG)
The RRPC Tactical Shooters Group
[TSG] meets informally on Sundays
at 1.30pm on the AP&T (formally the
PPC) range. The TSG's primary focus
is the practical deployment of the
tactical carbine (aka "black rifles")
for sport, duty and/or self-defense.
We seek to improve our skills with a
carbine/rifle in a dynamic environment utilizing modern techniques
and skill-building drills as taught by
some of the world's top firearms
trainers (i.e., Viking Tactics, Vickers
Tactical, EAG Tactical, etc.). We also
incorporate practical pistol in our
practice sessions and have recently added informal Saturday
night pistol practice on the indoor
range.
If you are interested in the learning
more, we invite you to join the TSG
Google group to be kept in the loop on
our activities.
Beginning in May, we will be incorporating a "Fundamentals
Day" (day TBD) on a regular basis
to help introduce shooters to the
TSG. It is designed to bring the novice and seasoned shooter alike up
to speed on current rifle technique
as it pertains to a "tactical" environment (e.g. zeroing, gun handling,
equipment briefing, etc.).

Cowboy Action
The RRPC sponsors the Rivanna
Rangers Cowboy Action Shooters
who are affiliated with the Single
Action Shooting Society (SASS). We
dress up in clothing that represents
the clothing of the “Old West” or
“Western Movies” and shoot single
action revolvers, lever action rifles
(in pistol calibers) and pre-1900
style shotguns (pumps or doubles),
and have fun. Ladies are always
welcome, this sport is not just for
the boys!
Our monthly matches usually consist of 4 to 6 stages or shooting scenarios. A stage will tell a story from
the old west that the shooter will
then act out. The shooter may be
required to say a line from a western
movie such as “I’m your huckleberry”
from Tombstone. The
shooter will then engage the targets
in the order specified. Each stage is
explained to the entire posse (group
of shooters) before the first shooter
starts and then each shooter has
the opportunity to review it again
with the Range Officer just prior to
shooting the stage. Targets are
fairly close and shooters are
scored on accuracy and speed.
While having fun is very important,
the most important thing is safety.
All participants are required to go
home with as many holes in their
bodies as they arrived with. Procedures and rules have been established by RRPC and SASS to
ensure the safety of the participants and spectators. Each
shooter is supervised all the way
through, from the loading table to
the shooting line and then to the
unloading table. This ensures that
the firearms are only loaded at the
appropriate time and with the appropriate number of shells. It also
makes sure that the firearms are
unloaded and clear after the
shooter is finished with each
stage.
The match cost is
$10 to shoot for
RRPC members and
$15
for
nonmembers. Matches are held the
second Saturday of each month
from March – November with a hiatus in August. Check the RRPC for
set up and start times.
Come out to watch and shoot a partial scenario after the match. It is
possible to borrow guns and leather
if you want to try and shoot a match.

The Women’s Program at RRPC has
been very active in the past, doing
things like holding AR-15 clinics,
trying our hand at archery, rifle
shooting, IDPA and other sports. We
have even organized trips to places
like Harper’s Ferry and had weekend excursions to NRA WOW Camps.

Coached Bull’s Eye Practice
Accuracy is the key to success in
competitive shooting, and to enjoyment of any the shooting sports, as
well as successful self-defense. This
session is designed to help members who wish to improve their pistol
marksmanship skills. Particular interest is for beginners but shooters
at any skill level are welcome and
will benefit. Family members may
also participate as long as the member is present. Format will be fundamentals of bullseye pistol, which
develops skills that are readily
adaptable to other disciplines including the speed sports of IDPA,
IPSC, and Steel Challenge. Pistols
of .22 caliber are recommended
but any pistol or revolver up to .45
caliber that is allowed on the indoor range may be used.
This program is run by coaches
Tom and Elizabeth Gathright. Both
are Distinguished Pistol Shots in
CMP .45-caliber Service Pistol national competition. The Distinguished Rifleman and Distin-
guished Pistol Shot Badges are the
highest honor that most military and
civilian rifle and pistol shooters can
aspire to earn.

consists of 10 shots in ten minutes.

Existing members, helping with work parties is a great way to help your club and meet some of the prospective members at
the same time. Existing members do not need to sign up for the work parties they attend.
Please remember that RRPC is our all-volunteer club. Please police your brass, take down your targets when finished, and put
trash / recyclables / brass in the proper receptacles. If the trash needs to be emptied please do so. If you see something that
should be done, do it. Always leave the club cleaner than you found it.
FIRST Steps Pistol
“FIRST” stands for “Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training,” a program the NRA developed
to meet the need for a firearms orientation program for new gun purchasers. This FIRST Steps program is a
basic course abbreviated to the most
fundamental shooting skills, and the
specifics of a particular model of pistol.
This course, because of its narrow
focus, can be completed as quickly
as three hours. Students will get the

International Defensive Pistol Association
International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches promote the
use of practical equipment including
full charge service ammunition to
solve simulated “real world” selfdefense scenarios. Aimed at men
and women who carry concealed, it
adds the pressure of a clock and
target scoring to help you assess
your equipment, mind-set and skills
under the friendly atmosphere of
like-minded shooters. Open to all
citizens who can legally possess a
handgun and with a minimum of
equipment requirements it's a low
cost way to start in the action shooting sports.
From beginner to expert, it is fun
and challenging. People from all
walks of life participate and contribute to the learning and friendly atmosphere. It is not training, although you can learn a lot, but practice of what you already know. It is a
good environment for new shooters
to be mentored and work on their
skills in a safe and supervised environment.
Matches are held at RRPC on the
3rd Saturday of every month except
December. Registration is from 8:00
-11:00AM. 9:00 squads are assigned by 8:50. Shooting usually
wraps up by 3:00pm. April and Au-
gust classifier matches require preregistration.
For shooters new to RRPC and/or
IDPA there is a mandatory new
shooter briefing that begins promptly
at 8:30AM, you should arrive to register by 8:00AM. You do not need to
be a RRPC member to participate in
a match. IDPA membership is required after your first match.
Round count is 50-70 rounds minimum. The match fee is $15, cash or
check only. Except for severe
weather all matches except January
are held rain or shine on the lower
Bullseye and AP&T ranges. The Plinking and 300 yard ranges are closed
during matches.

January BUG Match!
The January IDPA match will be our
annual BUG (Back Up Gun) match.
The rules are a little different and
even more concealed carry gun
friendly. Five rounds max per string.
No drawing. No reloads on the clock.
Max barrel length:
revolvers 3", semi-
auto 3.8". It's usually on the (COLD)
indoor range but we may try outdoors this year if the sun is shining
and the ground is dry.
It's a great chance to come out and
shoot what you are most likely carrying for personal protection. If you
don't have a gun that meets the
criteria come anyway and we'll
score you like normal.
January is also the first match for
this years Top Ten match in November so come and start earning
those points.

Rimfire Steel Match
These matches are designed to be
easy, fun, safe and affordable for
shooters of all ages and experience
levels. Matches include both .22 LR
rifle and handgun stages and the competition is open to all safe and responsible individuals who can legally own or
handle a firearm.
A typical stage is set up with 5-6 plates
at a distance of 20 feet to 30 yards.
You must place one shot on each plate
and time will stop when the last plate is
hit. The string of fire will be shot 5
times and the times added for a total
score. The cost will be $10 for ages 13
and up and free for those under ginners and will also challenge the

Archery

There is a lot of activity going on at
the club regarding archery. The ladies group has become very active
in archery and have become particularly fond of Clout Archery. A clout is
just a flag stuck in the ground and
from distances of up to 140 yards,
you try and shoot your arrows as
close to the clout (flag) as possible.
The closer to the clout, the more
points you score.
Target Archery
The new archery target range is located next to the clubhouse (on the
opposite side of the clubhouse from
the skeet range!). The new range
location is open and inviting. There
are marked targets at 20, 30, and
40 yards. Please come by and
check it out. Remember,

2015 Archery Lessons at Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club (RRPC)
Time: 4th Sunday of each month; 12:30 to 1:30 PM
Place: target range behind clubhouse or indoor range depending on weather.

We have 2 USA Archery/NFAA certified instructors who give archery lessons for beginners from youth (usually 10
years old) to adult and open to non-members. Lessons are conducted as a group activity on the 4th Sunday of the
month at 12:30 PM. They are comprised of a 5 lesson series. $10 for the first lesson and $5 for each lesson after
that. You do not have to commit to the entire series. Please check to calendar for schedule. Ladies group lessons

3D Archery
The 3D range is open for business. There has been a
major redesign of the range. There are now 15 shooting
lanes that begin by the gate to the lower ranges. Distances are marked with small red flags so you can set
your pins accordingly. The shooting lanes are mostly
angled toward the lower ranges to allow for longer
shots. Just follow the red flags. Distances will be unmarked during matches.
In 2015, we will have 3d matches scheduled. Check the
calendar for dates and times and always check the website for announcements of possible changes due to
weather, etc..

Appleseed is a two-day program that combines rifle marksmanship instruction with
learning about our American heritage and
the spirit that animated the Founders to
fight for our freedom, by telling the real
story of April 19, 1775 – the first day of the
Revolutionary War. Participants will learn
the skills required to shoot accurately at
distances of up to 400 yards from standing, sitting and prone positions. Students
who score 210 or higher on the Army Qualification Test target (equivalent to Expert)
are awarded a Rifleman patch.
The clinic takes place on the Tactical
range. The distance is 25 meters, and the
target is scaled to replicate the Army “D”
target at distances from 100-400
yards. Expect to shoot 400-500
rounds during the course. Centerfire
rifles up to .30 caliber are allowed,
but most students use .22 rifles. You
should equip the rifle with a sling and
two magazines (tube-fed rifles are OK,
too), and also bring a shooting mat,
lunch/snacks and water, and a chair.
A set of peep sights or a scope is recommended but not required.
Clinics typically sell out in advance
with a 20 shooter limit in each session.

Anyone who can handle a rifle safely,
from beginners to experienced shooters, can participate. Beginners and
families are particularly welcome.
Cost is $60 for adults, $20 for youth
under 18.
Pre-registration is required. Appleseed clinics are open to the public.
Youth Activities
The RRPC Youth Shooting Program
meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of
each month (except for some major
holidays) from 4:00pm until 6:00pm.
Any young person, 10-18 years old, is
invited to participate.
Shooting is primarily with .22 rifles
on the Indoor Range. Some shooting
is also done with .22 pistols, .177 air
rifles and air pistols. If there is
enough interest, there might be arrangements made to shoot other firearms. The Club supplies the firearms,
equipment and most of the needed
supplies for this activity. One may
use their own firearm and ammunition if they wish. Instruction and
coaching is provided.
A parent, guardian or other responsible adult must be present during
the time that "their" young person
is shooting. The past few months
have shown a great increase in the
number of young people wanting to
learn about the shooting sports.
Their parents have taken the time
to bring them out to the club, learn
the right way, and what fun they
can have.
The work assignment members
who have assisted at these youth
groups, have had such an enjoyable time, they are now returning
as coaches. People from all walks
of life, including current and retired
combat veterans help the young
people learn and improve their safe
shooting skills.
