Psalm 29
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders. The
voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king
for ever.
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people
with peace!

#577 God of Grace and God of Glory ~ CWM RHONDDA
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic
and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:
We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love,
whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to
his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of
man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope,
and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe
in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we
are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find
strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should
manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our
blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon
the earth. Amen.

#71 Glory Be to the Father ~ GREATOREX
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it
was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen. Amen.
Scripture
John 10:9-10
I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and go out, and shall find pasture. The thief cometh not, but that
he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and
may have it abundantly.
(ASV)
This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.
Offertory
Brother James's Air ~ Gordon Jacob
The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want, He makes me down to lie
in pastures green, He leadeth me the quiet waters by. My soul He
doth restore again and me to walk doth make within the paths
of blessedness, e'en for His own name's sake. Yea, though I pass
through shadowed vale, yet will I fear no ill; for Thou art with me,
and Thy rod and staff me comfort still. My table Thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes; my head with oil Thou dost anoint, and my
cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my days will surely follow
me, and in my Father's heart always my dwelling place shall be.

Doxology
#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow ~ OLD 100th
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures
here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son,
and Holy Ghost. Amen.

O God, we thank you that you have been the gate that opens the
door of the kingdom to us. Bless these gifts of our abundance, and
draw us all into the abundant life you offer to us. Amen.

have during your visit.
We welcome all our visitors as special guests. At the conclusion of today's worship, we invite you to

We invite you to visit with us again soon.
Each Sunday morning, Centenary provides morning snacks to our congregation and visitors in the 4
1/2 Street narthex, at the second floor coffee station, and kitchenette at Room 115. We encourage you
to enjoy these items along with juice and coffee as you meet and greet fellow worshipers. Your offering

OVERFLOW SHELTER
The chancel flowers are given in loving memory of
Nash E. Hardy, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Reginald E.
Parsons by Judy Hardy and family; and also in loving
memory of Charles D. Goodnough by his family.
Centenary is working with churches all across
Winston-Salem to provide an overflow shelter for
our homeless neighbors during the cold winter
months. As our local shelters fill up and it becomes
dangerously cold to sleep outside, our goal is to
provide a warm and safe place for people to come and
rest. But beyond that, we want to offer hospitality
and friendship to our neighbors, remembering that
when Jesus described his kingdom, he said, “Just as
you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to
me.”
We offer our prayers and concern for those who are
ill at home, hospitalized and in hospice care.
There are many opportunities to volunteer in
different capacities. Volunteers are needed to ride
buses with our drivers on Sunday, Monday, and
Tuesday nights. We are also partnering with First
Presbyterian Church in providing volunteers for
meals, check-in, and overnight shifts. Individuals
can sign up, or we also encourage Sunday school
classes, circles, small groups, etc. to take a whole
evening and cover all volunteer needs. More details
and a link to sign up can be found on our church
website on the “Missions” page.
Donations will also be accepted throughout the
overflow season for “blessing bags” to be given to
guests. Needed items (all travel size, please) include:
BISHOP GOODPASTER VISITS
We look forward to welcoming Bishop Larry M.
Goodpaster to Centenary’s pulpit at all four Sunday
morning services on January 25. Several of our adult
Sunday School classes have used tapes of Bishop
Goodpaster’s sermons as a basis of their studies, and
we are thrilled to have the opportunity to hear him in
person and see how our vision might be enriched and
informed by his broader perspective on the Church.
Bishop Goodpaster was assigned to serve as the
Resident Bishop of the Western North Carolina
Conference of The United Methodist Church in July,
2008, and reassigned in 2012. As bishop, he exercises
oversight and support of Centenary and more than
1100 other Methodist churches across western North
Carolina, as we live into our mission of making
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world.

Worship Bags
As you and your family enjoy worship together please
know that we have worship bags available during
all services on Sunday mornings for children ages
3-5th grade. The bags are located outside of both
the auditorium and the sanctuary. If you have trouble
locating them please ask an usher. You will notice
that the bags are different colors for different aged
children. We ask that at the end of the service you
replace the bags with their contents on their racks so
that we can refresh them for the next week’s worship.
Feel free to take home the children’s bulletin inside
and use it for activities during the week with your
child.
Acolytes
Our torchbearer ministry is expanding! If you have
a 4th, 5th or 6th grader and you regularly attend the

ADULT ED. / SPIRITUAL FORMATION
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality
Many sincere followers of Christ, followers who are
passionate for God, join a church, participate weekly
in a Sunday school class or small group, serve with
their gifts, and are considered “mature,” yet remain
stuck at a level of spiritual immaturity—especially
when faced with interpersonal conflicts and crises.
We will address this void, offering powerful pathways
to transformation that will help people mature into
a faith filled with authenticity and a profound love
for God. Come take steps in your Christian life and
discipleship to learn from past experience and find
personal healing. Sessions will include teachings
via DVD from author Peter Scazzero. Participants
will need the book and the workbook, Emotionally
Healthy Spirituality, available at Glad Tidings Books
& Gifts (or as an ebook).
This 9-week group will meet Tuesdays, January 20,
27, February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3 (9:30-11:00am)
with a team of facilitators from Centenary.
Find details for all of our small groups on the church
website under “Adult Ministries,” ask in Glad Tidings
for the Small Groups booklet, or find one in the
information stations.

Disciple Bible Study Fast Track – New Testament

Study but the time commitment was just too great?
Well, here’s your chance! Centenary is a beta-site
for the new Fast Track version of Disciple and we
will be covering the New Testament this spring in
just 12 weeks. The reading is manageable and the
weekly sessions are only 75 minutes long. Right after
Christmas is a great time to study the life of Jesus.
Participant Guide & Study Manuals are available in
Glad Tidings Books & Gifts.
This 12-week study will meet Tuesdays, January 6,
13, 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3, 10, 17,
24, 31 (9:30-10:45 am)

ROOTS REVIVAL
GLAD TIDINGS
Wednesday • January 14 • Memorial Auditorium
Another New Year! Is it our imagination because
it seems that we were just starting 2014! So many
wonderful opportunities present themselves at the
beginning of the New Year; we are immediately
overwhelmed by choices. Do we do this, or maybe
the other is the best direction? How much time do
I commit to myself, to my spiritual life? Oh, that is
going to have to wait because I have far too many
obligations now.
Roots Revival is a midweek worship service grounded
in Americana/roots-based music featuring Martha
Bassett and friends. Each service is centered around
one or two focus songs and an accompanying
Scripture passage and theme. This week, we remember
Jesus’ baptism as told in Mark 1:1-11. We’ll use
Andy Williams’ “Moon River” and John Fogerty’s
“Proud Mary” as we talk about Jesus going to the
Jordan River. Rev. Sarah Howell will preach on the
meaning of baptism and will bring water from the
Jordan River itself, which she brought back from a
Holy Land pilgrimage last year, to be a part of the
worship service. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday
nights in Memorial Auditorium. Learn more at www.
rootsrevivalws.com.
STEPHEN MINISTRY

listener? Do you like to feel you’re making a difference
in the lives of others? Then you may want to consider
becoming a Stephen Minister. Training sessions for
new Stephen Ministers will begin on January 6. We
have an active Stephen Ministry program here at
Centenary, and we hope you will consider becoming a
part of this caregiving ministry. For more information,
please contact Judy Reed at 768-2617 or 416-7218.
If you would like to find out more about Stephen
Ministry for yourself or someone you know (possibly
a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative) talk with
Mark Ralls (397-1362), Craig Ford (397-1353) or
Deena Morgan (764-4239) to find out how you can
receive help from a Stephen Minister. All calls are
confidential.
Our line-up of Bible Study groups is outstanding this
year and offers some of the most diverse choices we
have ever presented. Select one, you really can’t go
wrong, and you will give yourself the most enduring
gift of your lifetime. Glad Tidings has your books and
can even provide help in selection, but do it before all
slots are filled and you lose your place!
Our sale continues, and we have beautiful new baby
jewelry perfect for births and baptism gifts just
arriving. The Sassy towels are a hoot, and if you need
a good laugh, Glad Tidings is the place!
