"She's SO Talented!"
Matthew 25:14-30
Sunday, November 16, 2014
11:00 am Sanctuary
Focus:
Today, we explore Jesus’ “Parable of the Talents.” A “talent” was a large sum of money in the First Century,
equivalent to about 15 years of salary for a day laborer. This story appears to be about money and what we
do with it, but that is just the example Jesus gives. The NRSV version uses the word, talent, which of course
has a different meaning in our current English language, thus giving a richer sense of how we can invest in
God’s kingdom in the world today. I imagine that if we learn the lesson of this parable by investing what
God has given us, then one day we’ll get to hear God say “Well done, my good and faithful servant!” And
just maybe, God will turn to those standing nearby and exclaim, “She’s SO Talented!”

Luke 10:9, 17:20-21
Go! The kingdom of God is among you!
God's kingdom is right on our doorstep.
The kingdom of God doesn’t come by counting the days on the calendar.
God's kingdom is already among us.

#581 Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service ~ BEACH SPRING
*Affirmation of Faith
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic
and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:
We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love,
whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to
his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of
man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope,
and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe
in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we
are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find
strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should
manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our
blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon
the earth. Amen.
*Act of Praise
Go, Tell It on the Mountain ~ GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN
Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it
on the mountain: God's kingdom now has come!
Prayers of the People
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

We Hear the Word Proclaimed
Scripture
Matthew 25:14-30
"For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and
entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another
two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went
away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and
traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one
who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had
received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid
his master's money. After a long time the master of those slaves came
and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the
five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, "Master,
you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.'
His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you
have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of
many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one with
the two talents also came forward, saying, "Master, you handed over
to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His master
said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been
trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things;
enter into the joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the
one talent also came forward, saying, "Master, I knew that you were a
harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you
did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent
in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master replied,
"You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I
did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to
have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would
have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from
him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who
have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from
those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As
for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
(NRSV)
This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Consecration ~ John Ness Beck
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and
my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them
move at the impulse of Thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and
beautiful for Thee. Take my voice and let it sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee. Take my
silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use
every power as Thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall
be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal
throne. Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store. Take
my self, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.

I Will Arise ~ Alice Parker and Robert Shaw
I will arise and go to Jesus; He will embrace me in His arms. In the arms of

it, mount of Thy redeeming love. Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune
my heart to sing Thy grace. Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of
loudest praise. I will arise and go to Jesus; He will embrace me in His arms.

in worship with us today. If we can be of assistance to you, please visit with one of our friendly ushers,
located by the Narthex entrance. They will gladly answer your questions and help you with any needs
you may have during your visit.
We welcome all our visitors as special guests. At the conclusion of today's worship, we invite you to
speak to one of our ministers who will be at the Welcome Desk in the Narthex. We want to address any
questions you may have and provide you with pertinent information about Centenary. Please return and
visit with us again soon.
Are you hungry for hospitality?
Each Sunday morning, Centenary provides morning snacks to our congregation and visitors in the 4 1/2
Street narthex, at the second floor coffee station, and kitchenette at Room 115. In keeping with our yearlong "Are you Hungry?" theme, we have expanded our morning snack offerings to include locally sourced
nutritious items such as banana bread and whole grain muffins. We encourage you to enjoy these items
along with juice and coffee as you meet and greet fellow worshipers. Your offering into the basket at the
4½ Street and 2nd floor hospitality sites will allow us to continue, and expand, our hospitality food items.
If you have suggestions for food on these tables, please write a note and put it in the basket
with your offering.

HAITI TRIP LUNCH PRESENTATION
November 23 • Noon • Memorial Auditorium
You are invited to hear from members of the mission
team that traveled to Haiti in October, who will
host a lunch presentation to share photos, stories
and reflections from the trip. The team will provide
a meal very much like those they ate in Haiti—rice
and beans, fresh salad, and pikliz (a Haitian dish of
spicy pickled vegetables). This simple but delicious
fare will be a great backdrop to the team’s sharing.
Join us in the auditorium immediately following the
11:00 worship service. We will serve food at 12:15
and give the presentation over lunch. Contact Rev.
Sarah Howell (397-1348/showell@centenary-ws.

Worship Bags
As you and your family enjoy worship together please
know that we have worship bags available during
all services on Sunday mornings for children ages
3-5th grade. The bags are located outside of both
the auditorium and the sanctuary. If you have trouble
locating them please ask an usher. You will notice
that the bags are different colors for different aged
children. We ask that at the end of the service you
replace the bags with their contents on their racks so
that we can refresh them for the next week’s worship.
Feel free to take home the children’s bulletin inside
and use it for activities during the week with your
child.
Our Cornerstone middle school youth group (6th8th grades) meets from 5:00-6:00 pm each Sunday
evening, followed by a youth dinner at 6:00 pm. Our
evening finishes up with our senior high youth group
(9th-12thgrades), The Well, from 6:45-8:00 pm.
Come be a part of this incredible ministry where we
seek to know God and to soak up the love of Christ
so we can share that knowledge and love with all
who we encounter. We meet upstairs on the 4th floor

Food for Thought (Lunch and a Lesson)
Fall Series: “Indispensable Relationships”
Noon • Wednesdays from September – November •
Memorial Auditorium
November Food of the Month
$7 includes lunch, drink, dessert, music and message
You’ve heard it said that life is a journey, which means
that there is a destination we’re headed toward. But
how are we going to get there? Or more importantly,
WHO will be with us on this journey? Rev. Jonathan
Brake will introduce us to the people we need in our
life to reach our destination, to release the dynamic
power of traveling together and to draw us beyond
ourselves. Pulling from Leonard Sweet’s book, “11
Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Be Without,”
we will learn from various relationships in the
Bible. Food for Thought is open to the community
and is a great place to come for employees working
downtown!
Centenary Creation Care Meeting
November 13 • 6:30 pm • Room 222
All meetings of the Creation Care Team are on the
2nd Thursday of each month. We will be discussing
preliminary plans for 2015 and wrapping up our
action items from 2014. There is plenty of room for
new people and ideas for how to put our faith into
action through creation care. Contact: Rev. Jonathan
Brake, [email protected].
The Big Silence Retreat
January 25-28, 2015
St. Francis Springs Prayer Center
Only a few rooms remain, so register now! Rev.
Jonathan Brake will be leading this “4-day mostly
silent” retreat again for the third time! If you would
like to experience the closeness of God in a beautiful
setting, then contact Rev. Brake. This retreat is open
to all adults, regardless of experience, with silence,
meditation, contemplation and other forms of prayer.
Optional activities on sight include a nature trail,
walking the labyrinth, praying the hours and much
more. Registration is now open and space is limited.
Information and registration can be found in the
information stations, in Glad Tidings Books and
Gifts or in the box outside Rev. Brake’s office (Room
317).
The November food of the month is canned fruit
and cereal. Please bring your food donations to the
Missions bins, located in the Reception Narthex at 4½
Street.
First Gifts
Every year, as we approach the holidays, Centenary
members gather canned food to donate to our
Loaves & Fishes community ministry. Through these
donations, we are able to feed our hungry neighbors
and provide a meal at a time of year when shared
meals are an important hallmark of community and
family. You and your family can be a part of making
this possible! White bags are available around the
church for you to pick up and fill with food to donate.
Each bag will have a list of needed items attached to
it. Bring your full bags back on First Gifts Sunday,
November 30, the first Sunday of Advent. We will
dedicate these gifts in all services as we join together
to share the many good gifts that God has given us.
If you have any questions, contact Rev. Sarah Howell
([email protected]/397-1348).
Overflow Shelter Volunteer Training
Starting on January 1, First Presbyterian Church will
join other area churches in opening an overflow shelter
for our homeless neighbors. Centenary has been
assigned to the family group of churches supporting
the shelter at First Pres, so we will be recruiting
volunteers to provide meals, assist with check-in, and
stay overnight with our guests. To help prepare us, we
are offering some volunteer training opportunities on
Tuesday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 12
at 7:00 pm in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian
Church. Although these sessions are not required in
order to volunteer starting in January, they will be
beneficial in helping future volunteers get comfortable
with the process and expectations of this overflow
shelter. Training will cover a new check-in procedure
for this year, lessons learned from last year, fire and
safety procedures, and information on volunteer
roles, scheduling, and how to sign up. Contact Rev.
Sarah Howell ([email protected]/397-1348)
if you plan to participate or if you have any questions.

MUSIC AND THE ARTS
GLAD TIDINGS
New Exhibit • Go Out and Create
Now through January 22
Two weeks ago, we highlighted the Wind and Willow
mixes and last week we started the See’s Candies
promotion. This week we invite you to enjoy tastings
of Nancy O’s delicious pepper jellies and mixes!
YUM! Her pepper jellies are a must have for drop
in visitors over the holidays. Not only is it good over
cream cheese, but if you haven’t tasted it, you must try
the jelly over pimento cheese! Nancy had an accident
while in California in October. She is on the mend but
keep her in your prayers. We are so thankful for her!
You are invited to enjoy the latest exhibit, located
on the first floor. The works of art are created by
members of the Centenary family.
ROOTS REVIVAL
Wednesday • November 19 • Memorial Auditorium
Special Guest: Heather Maloney
Roots Revival is a midweek worship service grounded
in Americana/roots-based music. On November 19,
we welcome Heather Maloney to the Roots Revival
Stage, the free community concert series component
of our Wednesday night worship service. The evening
will begin at 7:30 with an abbreviated worship service
centered on one of Heather’s songs, then Heather will
offer a one-hour concert of her “adventurous folk”
music. Although Heather went to school for music,
she did not begin writing songs until 3 years of living
and working at a silent retreat meditation center drove
her to find new ways to channel the suffering and difficulty of that experience into something creative. The
result is a repertoire that plumbs the depths of human
experience through “juicy touches of pop and a little
dash of rock ‘n’ roll.” This event is free and open to the
public, but you'll need to reserve a spot (though we
won’t turn anyone away at the door!). Learn more and
get your free ticket at www.rootsrevivalws.com.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Luncheon • December 1 • Noon • Auditorium
The United Methodist Women present "A Very Merry
Christmas Luncheon" with special guest speaker,
Tammy Pollock. Musical guests will include Susan
Bates and Cat Zachary. You will not want to miss
The Snappy Tappers as they tippity-tap us into the

Our Two’s Company’s Ponchos are a big hit this year
because they are both stylish and reasonably priced.
We would also like to mention a great assortment of
board books especially requested by one of our new
customers. They make great gifts and our puppet
books are so fun!
If you didn’t hear, we had a dynamic duo in Glad
Tidings last week! It was so fun and made the holiday
beginning so bright!
Good things happen when you shop Glad Tidings!
