Christmas Collection Solemnity of Mary Collection THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! The baptism of the lord January 11, 2015 When Pope Francis met before Christmas with Vatican employees, mostly lay people with families, he asked them to do 10 things. The list sounded remarkably like suggestions for New Year’s resolutions. How might these fit into your plan for this year? “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are.” “Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love.” “Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.” “Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence.” “Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.” “Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord.” “Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people.” “Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.” “Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker … the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this.” Making sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not about shopping. How the Bible came to be the Bible we read today is quite a story. This night will help the middle school youth understand not only how the Bible was assembled, but also the writers themselves. She remained active in the Roman faith community and became an influential figure in the very early Church. Her husband, Manius, was a Roman official, and her son, St. Pudens, was a Roman senator. Tradition holds that St. Peter converted and baptized the whole family. Both Manius and Pudens were martyred, but Priscilla continued to follow St. Peter and gave him the use of her villa on the Via Salaria, which became the center of Peter’s work in the city. On the site of that villa, a catacomb was constructed and used for Christian burials. Many martyrs and seven popes were buried there, so it became known as the “queen of the catacombs.” The catacombs of Priscilla contain some of the earliest Christian art. The first images of Mary are painted there. St. Priscilla died around the year 98. Her feast day is on January 16th. Parish and community Life Today we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus and the beginning of his ministerial life. As Christ was sent by the Father, we too, by virtue of our baptism, are called to continue the work of Christ. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “Through Baptism . . . we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission; Baptism makes us members of the Body of Christ . . . therefore we belong to Christ – and to one another.” Baptism immerses us into the very life of Christ. May this day of celebrating the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord be a time for us to reflect on our own Baptism and ask: How am I responding to my Baptismal call to serve the Body of Christ? How am I continuing Christ’s work and ministry? Liturgical Ministers are urgently needed in the following ministries: Instituted Acolytes serve an essential role in our parish worship. The instituted acolyte is appointed to serve the priest in the celebration of the liturgy and to ensure that the details for that celebration have been attended to. He is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and may also assist with the formation of other ministers who assist at the altar. A love for the liturgy, the Eucharistic community and a desire to serve at the altar are part of the spirituality of this ministry. Because the ministry has its roots in the formation of ordained clergy, the ministry is reserved to men. Cardinal DiNardo has expressed his desire that men chosen for this ministry should be experienced liturgical ministers and willing to continue their liturgical formation. Men must be at least 21 years of age, fully initiated and living an exemplary Christian way of life, with no impediments to sacramental reception, (e.g., if married, one must be in valid union recognized by the Church). Worship Coordinators ensure that all of the ministers needed for their assigned mass are present and prepared to execute their ministry. They also set out the hosts and wine for mass, invite a family to present the gifts and coordinate the Presentation of the Gifts. Cantors serves a special ministry in the midst of the assembly as a leader of song and proclaimer of the Word as the psalmist. Those called to the ministry of cantor commit to additional rehearsal time and preparation. Though Cantors do not need to be professionally trained singers, they must possess skill in the use of their voice, a pleasant tone and the ability to lead the congregation in song. Cantors do not need to belong to a choir in order to serve in this ministry. Please contact Sandra Derby at the parish office (281)778-0400 or at [email protected] for more information or to begin serving in this ministry. LITURGICAL MINISTRY TRAINING EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION Saturday, January 31, 2015 10am – 11:30 am ALTAR SERVERS Saturday, January 24, 2015 2 pm – 3:30 pm For more information or to register for either session, please contact Sandra Derby at the parish office (281) 778-0400 or at [email protected] Spiritual Life I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. John 10:10 Living WORD — The Baptism of the Lord And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:15 Typical of Mark’s Gospel, the account of the Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan is tightly written; short but vivid and focused. No conversation between Jesus and John is reported. We are not told why Jesus received John’s baptism. Mark’s purpose here in the prologue of his Gospel is the revelation of Jesus’ identity. His use of the words It happened in those days links the event with other significant beginnings in salvation history, but the real focus is on the heavens being torn open, the spirit descending and the voice God pronouncing Jesus as his beloved Son. The ancient symbol for divine-human communication is enacted. It is a tremendous sacramental moment. Jesus presents himself, John pours the water and God sends the Spirit and anoints Jesus with his voice. This cooperative action is the public initiation of Jesus, his positioning for public ministry. And God was well pleased. Whatever Jesus had done before, things are now changed for him and everyone he encounters. Our own Baptism was also a significant event in salvation history. We were claimed in a new way by God, our family and our community through divine-human communication. We share in Christ’s three-fold ministry of Priest, Prophet and King— to teach, sanctify, and govern. It was our public initiation for a life serving the glory of God. Through our particular vocation, our myriad gifts and our attentiveness to the movement of our spirit, we respond to our baptismal call in a multitude of ways; all necessary contributions to the one Body of Christ. Following the homily, liturgical ministers at St. Angela’s were commissioned today. The rite of the Order for Commissioning examined the minister’s commitment to loving, faithful, reverent service and asked for God’s blessing on those who have responded to the needs of our community. Then we all stood and together renewed our baptismal vows. It was a sacramental moment that involved the cooperative action of God, Fr. John or Fr. Bob, our liturgical ministers and our whole community. One version of the commissioning rite notes there are no small tasks in the Lord’s vineyard. Each task, done in communion, receives value by God’s grace upon those who give and those who receive. Taking on or continuing in these ministries, even with their limited time commitment, has the power to transform lives and positions those ministers in relationship within St. Angela’s. It happened on this day today at St. Angela’s. Things are changed now for all who could hear a voice come down from the heavens. Our identity has been more fully revealed and in this moment of divine-human communication we believe that God is well pleased. St. Angela Merici’s Readings in Spirituality Book Club Consider Jesus Waves of Renewal in Christology by Elizabeth A. Johnson Tuesday, January 20th 7:00 pm ABUNDANT Living in the parish office on Sienna Parkway Listen: To “Radio for Your Soul” — 1430 AM KSHJ Guadalupe Radio Network. You can also listen on line at www.grnonline.com. Consider joining the other participants in St. Angela’s Book Club by reading Elizabeth Johnson’s Consider Jesus. A good selection as we move through Advent and the Christmas season, this Christological work is both completely orthodox as it probes the question “Who is Jesus?” and challenging as it grapples with His humanity and divinity, His self-knowledge, the meaning of suffering and how we understand His message in light of the consciousness of our time and age.
