Archery League 2015

January 2015

I will confess that when Bill decided to bring an
archery shop into Kenco, I wasn’t really interested.
I’m not a hunter. In fact, I don’t even eat meat,
except for fish. (This makes me a “pescatarian”
-from the Italian word pesce, which means fish.)
I also have an exceptional lack of coordination. I
can’t throw, catch or hit a ball. I can’t play basketball, tennis, golf...well you get the idea. Just ask
my high school gym teachers. I was banned from
ever throwing a discus when I narrowly missed the
head of the boys’ coach and the girls’ track coach
nicknamed me “Klutz”. We learned archery in gym
class. I couldn’t even hit the target.
Nevertheless, Bill brought home a bow for me
to try. He’s a very brave man. It was a pretty pink
camouflage compound bow. I was clueless, but I
did my best to seem grateful and I shot wildly in the
backyard until it was too cold to use the bow. I was
relieved to put it away for the winter. Our dog was

also relieved.
Then my childhood friend, Donna, got wind
of the fact that I had a bow. She’s a real archer,
a serious hunter. I reluctantly met her at the Wittenburg Sportsman’s club to site in my bow (even
though I didn’t know what that meant) and to get
a lesson. She was as patient as I was pathetic. My
archery skills started to improve and I became
confident enough to follow her to a 3D shoot. (This
is an event where you hike along a trail and stop
at numbered stations to shoot at three dimensional
targets. More on 3D in a later issue). I won’t say
how many targets I missed and how many arrows I
lost, but I had a blast! I was initially intimidated by
the thought of shooting around a bunch of rough,
tough hunting guys, but everyone was really friendly and helpful. I was hooked! (Thank you Ed, Angel
and Angelina!)
Now I participate in the Kenco archery league
and the indoor archery league at the Highwoods
Sportsman’s club. I’ve gone to 3D shoots at various other local clubs - Wittenberg, Southside, Rip

Big Indian also holds a few summer 3D shoots. I haven’t visited
the Saugerties club yet, but it’s on the list for next summer. You
should check out these clubs. Look on 3Dshoots.com for locations
and a schedule of events.
Ok, so what’s the point of regaling you with my personal history? It’s just this: If an uncoordinated pescatarian can learn to do
archery, have fun and fit in, so can you. Since the archery shop at
Kenco expanded to include indoor shooting, rentals, and lessons as
well as equipment sales and service, I’ve seen a rapid increase in
the variety of people taking an interest in the sport. It’s not unusual
to see long-time hunters and competitive shooters in the range as
well as those who are there just to have fun with their friends and
families. Kids especially love it. And women archers are probably
the fastest growing group. Is that cool or what?!
See you on the range!

and businesses to help push you to reach the goals you’ve always
had, the ones right out of reach, like info on Rock-The-Ridge, the
50 mile trail event sponsored by the Mohonk Preserve, or Active
Wellness night, featuring local nutrition and fitness experts. And
don’t forget our Women’s Archery Night, where we encourage all
ages to come and try our interactive archery range and learn more
about the archery program at Kenco. Let us know what challenges
you will be tackling this month, and how we can help you face
them!
Archery League: Jan. 19th- March 29th
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, the mid-winter archery
league is a great way to polish your skills and meet some new
friends. It’s a great time, and is only as competitive as you make it.
So far we already have more participants than ever before. Sign up
individually or as a team. All ages welcome.
Why choose a compound bow? Compound bows for beginners are
inherently more accurate when set up correctly than traditional (recurve
or longbow) bows. This means an easier learning curve and accuracy
at a greater distance. To be accurate, though, requires more parts and
components and some level of setup. If your goal is hunting, target, or
shooting 3D on a competitive level this is the style for you.

Whether you’re planning an elaborate dinner party or a romantic
evening for two, you won’t want to miss our food and wine night
featuring recipes, demonstrations, and the best in local edible offerings! With samples from some of my favorite places like Cheese
Louise and Oliver Kita and demonstrations of how to properly
sharpen knives (a skill any good home chef needs to know!) this
event will help you get your kitchen A-game on.
Women’s Archery Night: Thursday, February 19th 4pm-7pm
Come on, you know you want to try it. Well now you can with a
free 10 minute beginner lesson and demo of our interactive archery range. All ages are welcome, but sign up in advance, space
will be limited!
Active Wellness Night: Tuesday, Feb 24th 4pm-7pm
Join in with demonstrations and Q & A with local experts in the
fields of Yoga, Pilates, Nutrition, Zumba and Karate.
Arrows can be used in

Why choose a traditional bow? Traditional bows are plain fun to
shoot. Archers have been shooting this style of bow for thousands of
years. They are simple, removing any mechanical components from
the experience. Traditional bows are great to learn on as they will
dramatically show you when you are making a mistake but will hone
your skill and form, making you a better archer. To be accurate with
a traditional bow requires only practice.

Kershaw Knives (Oregon)
Some people say that a dog is man’s
best friend. I wouldn’t argue with that.
But I would add that a knife is man’s
best tool. Whether you use it every
day or only in an emergency it’s nice
to know that your knife is well made.
Kershaw has been making their cutlery
in Oregon since 1974 and does it very
well. These are some of our favorite

great shoes!

These socks don't itch or scratch. Your
feet don't sweat; which means they
don't stink. Best of all your feet don't
complain. We believe that socks are as
important as the shoe for foot health
and well being. There is nothing nicer
than putting your feet in a great pair of
socks. Last year I treated myself to 7

put all the rest of my socks away and
loved the new ones. Now I have awesome socks and never a mismatch.

Joey Flashlight
We carry a bunch of flashlights at Kenco, so what makes this one so
special? When you hold it you will feel the quality. Push the button
once and you get a nice tight 1 watt, 90 lumen beam of light; push
again the 18 LED lantern/work light turns on, push a third time and six
red LEDs blink with an additional 3 at 360 degree for warning. The
grand finale is a magnet in the end that attaches to an automobile or
other equipment for safety or work. With lights from big box stores
you never know what’s garbage and what’s not. Not with the Joey
Flashlight from Kenco. This manufacturer promises: We warranty our
flashlights against manufacturing defects or failure for life. Not bad
for a twenty dollar light! $19.95
Peet Odor Eliminators
We had a young man that
worked here that had the
stinkiest feet in the northern
hemisphere. He tried everything. Nothing ever worked!
Sprays, powders and other
odor eaters either mask smell
or absorb smell. Here is a
product that eliminates the
odor by killing the source: both
airborne and surface contaminants. Odors aren’t temporarily
disguised- they’re gone. Ozone
is the strongest available sterilizer known to man, but it’s
safe because it’s made up of three sterilizing oxygen molecules, and it
completely reverts back to breathable two molecule oxygen in a relatively short time. We truly believe that if you sanitize your shoes your
feet will be healthier, more comfortable, and smell better. Perfect for
you Danny! $79.99

you can too. This is a great starter package

I know some of you will lose respect for
me but I have several guns. They may be

them and from others) but my wife doesn’t
want to see them. We found this piece of

and it holds 4 to 5 rifles. They are out of
sight and locked. There is an added bonus
of a bottom door that can hold ammunition,
also locked. $399.00

Steps for Snowshoeing
By Skip Card (Hookline Fish Co.)
Folks who love the outdoors in spring, summer and fall sometimes take a recreational holiday in winter. The excuses might
sound familiar: Winter activities cost too much. The recreation
areas are too far away and too crowded. The sports take years to
learn. And it’s too darn cold out there.
But there’s one antidote for all these winter complaints: snowshoes.
Snowshoes were once just a means of winter transportation,
bulky contraptions that made your footprints wide and long enough
to keep you atop the snow as you trudged from place to place.
Modern snowshoes come in shapes and styles designed to suit a
variety of outdoor pursuits, from weeklong snow-camping trips to
quick winter jogs.
As for those stay-indoor excuses? Snowshoes offer a rebuttal to
every winter whine. Consider the familiar arguments:
Winter sports cost too much. A pair of even the best snowshoes
will cost less than half what you’d likely pay for a decent pair
of downhill skis. The necessary snowshoe accessories – rugged
winter boots, a good jacket, some warm pants and mittens – are
probably already in the box where you stash your winter clothing.
A pair of ski poles will come in handy to keep you steady as you
walk, but any cheap pair will do.
Once you’re equipped, you’re ready to go for a winter walk.
There’s no lift tickets to buy, no licenses to obtain, no gas tank to
fill. All you need is some snow on the ground.
The winter playgrounds are too far. Snowshoeing doesn’t require steep hills, groomed trails, smooth ice or pristine waterways.
Many Catskills residents will find suitable snowshoeing terrain not
far from their back doors (any snow-covered field or forest will do
nicely) and even city dwellers can mush a trail through a nearby
park, cemetery or golf course. If the snow is seriously deep, roads
and sidewalks offer convenient paths.
Best of all, there’s no crowds. You might see a few fellow
snowshoers in the most popular areas, but you’ll never stand in a
lift line or wait your turn to get on an ice rink.
Winter sports take too long to learn. Snowshoeing has what
some call a “concise” learning curve. A snowshoe guide once
confided to me his teaching technique: “When people first put on
snowshoes, they are ‘beginners.’ After about 20 steps, I call them
‘intermediates.’ And the only reason I don’t call them ‘experts’ is
because they will realize they don’t need to pay me anymore.”
The trick when wearing snowshoes? Walk with your feet
spaced just a bit farther apart than normal. That’s it. Ascending or
descending serious hills might require a bit of practice, but nothing compared to the years it takes to learn to ski through moguls,
skate a figure-eight or execute a perfect telemark turn.
It’s too cold outside. If cold weather keeps you indoors in winter, you have two options: dress warmer or move faster. The hightech fabrics and synthetic insulations in today’s premium winter
clothing do a fantastic job of keeping your body heat next to your
body. Obtaining winter warmth might be simple as upgrading
your December wardrobe.
But if you still find yourself chilled when you step outside, the
second trick is to step faster. Move quick enough to burn some
of those calories your body stored for times such as these. You’ll
get warmer as you get healthier. All you need is a good pair of
snowshoes, and this region’s winter wonderland will become your
personal playground.
