APOSTOLIC GREETING
P:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with you all.
C:
And also with you.
P:
Trusting in the word of life given in baptism, we gather this day of the Baptism of
our Lord with faith and joy to worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
C:
Amen.
OPENING INVOCATION
P:
The heavens are telling the glory of God;
C:
the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
P:
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
C:
the glory of the LORD rises upon us.
P:
See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over all the peoples,
C:
but the LORD rises upon us and his glory appears over us.
P:
Nations will come to God’s light,
C:
and kings to the brightness of God’s dawn.
P:
for the Lord will be our light,
C:
and our God will be our glory. Amen.

ORDER OF CONFESSION
P:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C:
Amen.
P:
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But we
know that nothing is able to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ.
Therefore, if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then open ourselves to the Lord
and each other and confess our sins in penitence, faith, and hope. O most merciful
God,
C:
we confess that we have fallen back on our human nature and continue to sin.
Without your loving grace there is nothing we can do ourselves to free us from
this bondage. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what
we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with
our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake
of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead
us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of
your holy name. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
P:
Hear the good news! In raising Jesus from the grave, God shatters the power of sin
and death. You are no longer captives, but are set free. As a called and ordained
minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the
entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit. God has made you alive together with Christ by nailing your
trespasses to the cross. By grace you have been saved. Go in the knowledge of this
salvation to serve God and one another.
C:
Thanks be to God! Amen.
5
THE KYRIE
SALUTATION and PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray. Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves
over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we
may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON
Genesis 1:1-5
Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the primeval darkness, God brings light. This
familiar story was good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their
history. It remains good news for any person living in the chaos and darkness of
despair. God created and continues to create new life.
L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God!

SECOND LESSON
Acts 19:1-7
In Ephesus, Paul encounters people who had received John’s baptism of repentance
but had never heard of the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After Paul
baptized them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and empowered them with gifts of the
Spirit. .
L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God!
 ALLELUIA
 ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE GOSPEL
THE GOSPEL
Mark 1:4-11
Mark’s gospel reports the story of Jesus’ baptism with some irony: the one on whom
the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit.
 RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL
9
 CONFESSION OF FAITH
Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
