Some shall come and some of you shall be sent out, for the Lord thy God shall use you for a light, and he hath a plan which shall amaze even you as it shall come to pass, for the Lord thy God shall do a work in your midst, if ye are guided by His Word, and His Spirit.” Brother Sodeman, July 1969 Our Church History Late in 1956 the late Mother Sadie Adams and her son Eugene went to Bishop Louis Henry Ford and requested that he send, Elder Carlis L. Moody to Evanston to open a church. Elder Moody met with Bishop Ford and said , “Yes” he would go. On January 7, 1957, Elder Moody had the organizational meeting in the home of Chauncey and Sadie Adams at 1916 Dodge. Elder Moody was 22 years of age, and Sister Moody was 19. The late Elder James W. Markham helped with that first gathering. By Elder Moody’s side was his wife, Mary, his mother Geneva Smith, and daughter Sideary. The small congregation consisted of six members; Mother Sadie Adams, Deacon Chauncey Adams, Mother Lillie Hudson, Sister Marion Hudson, Thelma Adams, and Sylvia Clinkscales. Elder Moody was led of the Lord to name the church “The Faith Temple Church of God In Christ at Evanston”. The Lord gave him these scriptures as confirmation, Philippines 4:6-7 and Hebrews 13:8 These verses were the corner stone verses for the church and remain so even today. The church began to grow and had services in member’s homes. First the Adam’s then Marion Hudson’s, and Mother Clemmie Walker’s home. On April 28, 1957 they had their first official opening service at 4:00 P.M. at Foster school. 2010 Dewey Avenue in Evanston In July of 1957 Elder Moody and the Saints had their first open air tent revival. In 1958 the first tent was damaged and the congregation purchased another tent for $700.00 to continue their summer crusades. In the fall of 1958 after the tent meeting closed, the Lord blessed the congregation to share services with Faith Tabernacle Fire Baptized Holiness Church. The late mother McCracken and the members opened their arms to Faith Temple. We worshipped at 1712 Hovland Court for approximately two years. In 1959 The Lord blessed us to have service at 1821 Church Street, at the rear of a barbershop. The saints many times reminisce and testify of the days “Behind the barber shop”. The church purchased its first lot for $3000, but could not build on the lot. In the summer of 1961 Elder Moody and the late Brother Aaron Bonaparte were preparing the tent to begin the summer tent revival. Around 1:00 P.M. the Lord spoke to Elder Moody and said, “Son, for Our Founders Bishop Carlis L. and Mother Mary A . Moody Annual Founder’s Day Hymn Chorus Verse 1 Verse 2 We’ve Come This Far by Faith We’ve come this far by faith, Leaning on the Lord Trusting in His Holy Word, He’s never failed me yet. Oh, oh - -, oh - - can’t turn around - We’ve come this far by faith. Don’t be discouraged, When trouble’s in your life. He’ll bear your burdens, And move all misery and strife. That’s why we’ve… Repeat Chorus Just the other day I heard a man say He didn’t believe in God’s word. But I can truly say That God has made a way. And He’s never failed me yet. That’s why we’ve Repeat Chorus every seat you put under this tent, I will fill.” Elder Moody told Brother Bonaparte what the Lord had spoken to him. Brother Bonaparte went to get chairs, and returned with 300. On the next Sunday the Lord kept his promise and filled every chair with people. For the next seven weeks the Lord sent revival. Many miracles took place. There were fifty-three people who came to know the Lord and were added to the congregation. In 1962 the church purchased property on Hartrey for $15,000 but was unable to build. A plot of land was purchased at 1932 Dewey Avenue in January of 1965 for $20,000. Building commenced in August of 1967 and was completed early January 1968. The congregation marched from 1821 Church Street to the edifice at 1932 Dewey, and the first service was conducted. In 1977 the mortgage was paid in full. Through the years the Faith Temple Church has been dynamic and vigilant. Its ministries have encompassed the Evanston, Chicagoland areas as well as the world. From 1967 to 1979 Faith Temple was the home church for a drug rehabilitation ministry, Prevention Inc. For thirteen years the church ministered to the community by way of radio on WEAW and WYCA. In 1970 the then Elder Moody became involved in Home and Foreign Missions. Through his leadership the Faith Temple church has built an orphanage in India in 1972. Funds and donations from our home and foreign missions department have assisted in the building of churches around the world, as well as aided with rent, food, and utility bill payments. This practice still continues. The church has taken an active role in Prison ministry, and nursing home ministry. In 1980 the church embarked upon a new area of ministry, “Christian Education”. Faith Christian Academy was born on September 8, 1980 with twenty-three students. . In 1985 Faith Temple underwent expansion. A second level was added in order to provide classroom space for the school. In 1988, this phase of the project was paid in full. As the congregation continued to grow and the needs of the Academy increased, the Lord spoke again to Bishop Moody and said, “Build.” On August 20, 1995 the late Bishop Shepard Little conducted a groundbreaking service for the new construction of the Faith Temple Church. In June 1996 the congregation moved out of the original building and began holding services in the Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center and the Family Focus (Our Place) building. In September 1996 the former building was demolished. Rebuilding commenced in November 1996 and was completed for occupancy in January 1998. The Lord provided the over two million dollars that was needed for building. The new structure that we sit in today was dedicated on January 11th, 1998. The year of 2001 was the year of attack and victory for Missions as well as for the United States. “911” was felt by everyone, especially those living in the US and more specifically New York. This was also the year the International Missions President, and our Pastor and Founder, Bishop Carlis L. Moody survived both a stroke and later openheart surgery and lived to proclaim victory over the enemy and the love, mercy, and miraculous healing power of God. In 2008 Bishop underwent throat surgery with great victory, and has risen again to preach and sing like never before. In 2014 Bishop Moody’s health was challenged, but once again we saw the power of God as he healed him from bleeding, the painful effects of shingles, and even a code blue medical alert. Bishop has continued to preach the Gospel with more fervor and celebrated 80 years of life this past December. In May of 2005 Bishop Moody launched the fundraising for the next phase of expansion. As the vision unfolds we will soon see Faith Manor an emergency housing facility for those who are in need, as well as Sunday housing for members who live a distance from the church. As we follow Christ and through the obedience of His servants, Bishop and Mother Moody, the Faith Temple Church Family is experiencing a new and different move of God. Pastor Carlis Moody Jr. stands to assist Bishop Moody as the Lord guides and shapes the vision and purpose of His people to win souls and reach the community. It is the vision of our Pastor that the continued expanded ministries of the church will include housing counseling, -financial planning, home buyers workshops and information, insurance planning and educational assistance through scholarships, school grants and tutorial assistance. Presently, through the support and efforts of our local work, we have been able to help global ministry expansion in other countries. Following the exemplary leadership of Bishop Moody, God has blessed the “Sons” of this ministry to open ministries throughout the United States. There you have it Saints, a history of a great church founded by anointed servants of God. We would need volumes of space, to inform you of every fact, and detail of the events that have occurred. Bishop has chronicled some of this information in his book, Humility before Honour. His latest publication, What Happens When You Say,” Yes Lord”, further exclaims the wonders and glory of God’s provision when you live a life of obedience to Him. Nonetheless this expose’ is just a glimpse into the past records of this church. This history is yet a work in progress as young people are being inspired towards excellence, and the Saints are being encouraged to recognize Christ’s presence and power in their lives. The church continues to grow and strengthen its’ resolve for Christ in Evanston and the world. We now look to the year 2015 and beyond with great hope for our families and our community. By faith we will soon retire the 3.7 million dollar mortgage, becoming debt FREE and CLEAR and we will break ground to BUILD Faith Manor. Fifty-eight years of active service, and Faith in God...is the Victory that over cometh the World. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever Hebrews 13:8 Surely we can say that over these 58 years We’ve Come This Far by Faith.
