“United in Faith”
From the Pastor’s Desk
Pay attention to this
weekend’s Gospel reading.
Jesus is being baptized in the
Jordan River by John the
Baptist. In those five short
verses of the Gospel, Mark
offers a powerful lesson about
the two aspects of the most
important thing in the world:
faith.
Faith is like a coin. Let say, it is like a quarter. It has
two sides. On one side, there is the head of George
Washington and some inscription and on the other side,
there is an American eagle. You can’t have one side without
the other. You have a coin with both sides or you have
nothing. The two sides of the coin of faith are belief and
behavior, perception and practice, discernment and deeds. In
other words, the two key aspects of faith—both of which
must be present for there to be any faith at all—are: “what
we know”, and “what we do about it”.
The “what we know” part of faith is recited each week
in the Creed. We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, Creator of everything, seen and unseen. We
believe in the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus
Christ, who took on human flesh, died on the cross to pay
the price for mankind’s sins, and rose from the dead three
days later. We believe that if we put our trust in Him, if we
enter into a proper personal relationship with Him, we’ll live
forever in Heaven.
When these basic Christian doctrines are referred to as
“what we know,” it doesn’t mean what we wish, or what we
hope might be true, or wouldn’t it be nice if it really turns
out to be that way. Instead it means what we KNOW, what
we are sure of, what is absolutely certain. Our faith is not
based on wishful thinking. We must have a firm
understanding that the doctrines are indeed true. As the
letter to the Hebrews explains, “Faith is being sure of what
we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Heb 11:1).
Knowing that the Christian doctrines are true is only the
beginning. It is only one side of our coin of faith. The other
side of it is putting that knowledge into action, the “what we
do about it” part. Once we know this wonderful gift of our
faith, we will do acts of mercy and charity, not because we
have to, but rather because we want to.
As you remember from the Gospel reading, as soon as
Jesus went out of the water after being baptized, the heavens
were opened, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the
form of a dove, and a voice from Heaven said, “You are my
beloved Son; on you my favor rest.” In two sentences, Mark
describes the Holy Trinity: God the Father in Heaven; God
the Son on earth; and the God the Holy Spirit, the giver of
life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. This is one
January 11, 2015
of the most important “what we know” doctrines of the
faith. And just before Jesus was baptized, John the Baptist
demonstrated an important “what we do about it” behavior.
He declared for all to hear, “One mightier than I is coming
after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of
his sandals.”
The behavior John demonstrated is called humility.
Many people nowadays think humility means being
humiliated, being a total loser and having no self-esteem. In
actuality, humility means having the correct self-esteem
based on reality—the reality that God is all-powerful and
awesome, and we’re not. Humility is actually the opposite of
pride, which is the worst of all sins.
When we are humble—when we realize the universe
does not revolve around us and when we stop doing things
just to impress others—we are most effective in doing acts
of mercy and charity, because we no longer have a “what’s
in it for me?” attitude.
True faith has two components: belief and behavior. We
must know who God is and what He has done for us, and we
have to put that knowledge into action. As John showed, the
first step is to act as if God is God (because He is) and that
we are not (because we aren’t). Then, our two-sided coin of
faith will shine like a brand-new Illinois quarter. God will be
delighted and we will be filled with joy.
And now a few things I want you to know:

January 10th was the anniversary of the death of
former SSCM Pastor Victor Sivore. Please say a
prayer for the repose of his soul. He died in 2001.

Those of you who have a Mass intention and you
wish to bring up the offertory gifts, please sit in the
designated last pew on the right. If you are not there
when the Mass begins, Ushers will assign someone
else to do it.

Speaking of Mass intentions, Fr. Larry, our former
Pastor has told me lately that he has no Mass
intentions at his two churches. If you would like to
request a Mass celebrated there please, contact the
parish office of the Immaculate Conception Church
at 1431 N. North Park Avenue, Chicago, IL 60610,
ph. 312-944-1230.

Parents of the First Communion kids don’t forget
there is a Parent Meeting today at 3:30 PM in the
church.
Thanks for your continuous support and generosity toward
SSCM church. Have a nice week and God bless you and
your loved ones,
Fr. Valdi

SS. Cyril & Methodius
Parish School
Dear Parents,
Please join us for National Catholic Schools Week,
our annual celebration of what makes education at
SS. Cyril & Methodius School outstanding. Starting with
the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday, January 25th, we have a
whole week of activities planned to show what our
students are accomplishing and to celebrate the
community we have built to educate tomorrow’s citizens
and church leaders.
This year’s theme centers on community:
“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith,
Knowledge and Service.” The theme highlights
the fact that schools are not only communities
themselves; they are also part of many other
communities, including families, parishes,
towns/cities and our country.
The theme also focuses on key elements of
Catholic education: faith development,
academic excellence and dedication to service.
These elements set Catholic schools apart from
other educational options. They are why
families make sacrifices to provide their
children with a Catholic education.
Please visit SS. Cyril & Methodius School
during Catholic Schools Week to enjoy the
work of our students and staff, and learn about
their faith development and community service
projects. Bring your friends and neighbors,
particularly those who may be considering
Catholic education for their children.
I am grateful every day for the teachers,
staff, board members, parents, volunteers and
parishioners who make our school a success.
Catholic Schools Week is a good time for all of
us to thank them for their dedication and
service.
Sincerely,
Mrs. S. Tkachuk
Principal

What if the Paschal Mystery isn’t something that Jesus
went through a couple thousand years ago, but something
that we’re all invited to live every day? Using the
metaphor of a marathon and his prodigious skill as a
storyteller, Terry Nelson-Johnson challenges us to run our
own Paschal Mystery, teaching us to look at life through
the lenses of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday
and Easter.
Some workshops require a minimum number of

not just because of the holidays!
Members of the Parish Council spent their Halloween
at the Daybreak Soup Kitchen in Joliet. The Parish Council members prepared a “Taco Dinner” for all in attendance.
Prior to the Council serving the meal, Fr. Valdi led everyone in a prayer. Pictures from the event can be found on the
parish website. The next Soup Kitchen Ministry dates in which our parish is responsible for are: January 29, 2015, May
29, 2015, July 31, 2015 and October 30, 2015. If you are interested in volunteering, or making a financial donation
towards the food, please contact the coordinator of the Soup Kitchen Ministry, Jackie Papiernik at (630-243-9358).
The November meeting was held on November 17, 2014 in the Rectory Meeting Room. No parishioners attended this
meeting. As a reminder, all parishioners are invited to attend the monthly meeting.
All Parish Organizations met with the Parish Council members and Parish Staff on December 14, 2014. A
representative of the Archdiocese was present to discuss a new financial program that will start July 1, 2015. In addition,
topics such as the Daybreak Soup Kitchen Ministry, an upcoming Ministry Fair (to be held early Spring) and the 2015
Parish Calendar were discussed. A note to the Parish Organizations: Informational packets regarding the Daybreak Soup
Kitchen can be picked up at the rectory once your organization has committed to a service date.
The December meeting was held offsite on December 15, 2014. At this meeting, there was some discussion around
the updating of the Parish Council By-Laws. The by-law changes will be discussed in more detail at the next meeting.
The January 19, 2015 meeting will be held in the Rectory Meeting Room. All are welcome to attend this January 19th
meeting.

2015 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL
CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS
“Entrusted with Responsibility”
The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. Many of our
parishioners have received a mailing from Archbishop Cupich. He asks
that you make a pledge to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please
respond generously.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is Entrusted with
Responsibility. We each have a responsibility to recognize God’s gifts
to us and to nurture them.
As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our
gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our
parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is,
in fact, one way to express this gratitude.
As you review the mailing from Archbishop Cupich, please note the
ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that
directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously.
Note that when our parish reaches its goal of $58,283.00 in paid
pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to
us for use in our parish.
Jesteśmy żyjącymi świątyniami Boga i przynosimy Jego prawdziwą obecność temu światu.
On sam wzywa nas abyśmy dzielili swoje dary z innymi.
dodatkowo zebranych środków, zostanie zwrócona nam, do
wykorzystania na niezbędne potrzeby naszej parafii.

Home Blessings
The blessing of households / houses is
part of the heritage of Catholic Tradition.
The primary focus of such blessings is the
people who live in the dwelling place and
the use that they make of the place and its
several parts. Those who participate in
these blessings acknowledge that the place in which the family
dwells ultimately is a gift from God and ask for God to be
always present in their lives. People pray that their household
may be an instrument of God’s blessing in society and all of
creation and affirm that the people who dwell in these homes
are a holy people set apart for God’s work. Household
blessings remind us that we need to be compassionate toward
those persons who have no housing and always be welcoming
to the stranger.
If you have just moved into your house, have never had
your house blessed or have recently completed some major
construction work, please feel free to call the rectory and set an
appointment for Fr. Valdi or Deacon Mike to pay a visit.
May Perpetual Light

remember the souls of
R. Kevin Wallace, Hailey Ann Johncock and Teresa

faithfully departed family and friends rest in everlasting
Peace.

“United in Faith”
Drodzy Parafianie,
Zwróć uwagę na dzisiejsze
czytanie z Ewangelii . Jezus
został ochrzczony przez Jana
Chrzciciela w rzece Jordan. W
tych pięciu krótkich wersach
Ewangelii, Św. Marek
strony naszej monety wiary to wiara i zachowanie człowieka
wierzącego, percepcja i praktyka, rozeznanie i czyny. Innymi
Stworzyciela Nieba i Ziemi, wszystkich rzeczy widzialnych i
niewidzialnych.
trzeciego dnia. Wierzymy, że jeśli Jemu zaufamy, jeśli
wejdziemy we właściwe osobiste relacje z Nim, będziemy żyć
wiecznie w Niebie.
List do Hebrajczyków
Druga strona monety wprowadza naszą wiedzę do działania,
do części "co powinniśmy z tym zrobić". Kiedy poznamy ten
W dzisiejszych
czasach wielu ludzi uważa, że pokora oznacza upokorzenie,
bycie na pozycji przegranej i brak poczucia własnej wartości.
W rzeczywistości, pokora oznacza posiadanie właściwego
poczucia własnej wartości w oparciu o rzeczywistość, a
nie my.
skuteczniejsi w czynieniu uczynków miłosierdzia i miłości,
uczynił, a tą wiedzę musimy zamienić w działanie. Św. Jan
my (bo nie jesteśmy). Wtedy, nasza dwustronna moneta wiary
zabłyśnie jak nowiuteńka dwudziestopięciocentówka. Bóg
będzie zachwycony, a my pełni radości.
Kilka spraw z życia parafii:

W dniu 10 stycznia minęła rocznica śmierci byłego
proboszcza Św. Cyryla i Metodego, Ks. Victora
Sivore. Ks. Sivore zmarł w roku 2001. Proszę o
modlitwę za spokój jego duszy.

Osoby, które mają zamówioną intencję Mszy Świętej i
życzą sobie nieść dary ofiarne, proszę o zajęcie
miejsca w wyznaczonej ostatniej ławce po prawej
stronie. Jeśli jesteście nieobecni na rozpoczęciu Mszy
Świętej, Marszałkowie wyznaczą inne osoby.

Mówiąc o intencjach Mszy Świętych, nasz były
proboszcz - Ks.
60610, tel. 312-944-1230

Rodzicom dzieci pierwszokomunijnych przypominamy
Cyryla
i Metodego. Życzę miłego tygodnia i niech Bóg błogosławi Was
i Waszych najbliższych,
Ks. Waldemar Stawiarski

hydrants at all times.
As winter weather approaches, including snow, please park
in lots that have already been cleared of snow to give our
