Washington CTE Student Leadership Civic Engagement Day February 4, 2015 Washington State Capital Building The Washington State Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSO’s), Washington Association of Career & Technical Education, OSPI Career & Technical Education Staff invite Career & Technical Education Students and their teachers to attend the 2 nd Annual CTE Student Leadership Civic Engagement Day at the State Capital. This unique opportunity allows student leaders from across the State of Washington to learn about state government and showcase CTE Programs while developing their leadership skills. The day will begin with a training session in the Sate Reception Room of the Capital Building featuring Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn, members of the State Legislature, and training for students. The training will focus on the legislative process, how to interact with members of the State Legislature, and issues critical to CTE. Throughout the day student displays on the 3rd and 4th Floor Mezzanines of the Capital building will showcase CTE Programs from around the state as well as the State CTSO’s. Student participants are encouraged to schedule appointments and meet with their Senators and Representatives. The goals of the event are to: Educate Students about the legislative process and the importance of civic engagement. Showcase CTE Student Leaders and Programs. Facilitate positive student interactions with members of their elected officials. Provide a collaborative environment for teachers to share best practices in CTE Student Leadership. Schedule for the Day: 7:30 Check In State Reception Room Display Set Up for approved displays 8:00-9:30 Welcome & Training Session State Reception Room 9:30-3:00 Displays open to public Capital Rotunda 9:30-3:00 Meet with Legislators/ Tour the Campus Capital Campus 3:30 Display Removal Hotel Accommodations: A block of hotel rooms has been set up at the Governor Hotel in Olympia for those wishing to stay overnight. The rate is $94 plus tax per night and include a complimentary breakfast. To book your reservation contact them at: 360-352-7700. Also included with your room is free parking. You can park at the hotel and take the shuttle to the Capital Campus. Registration: This is a FREE event open to all CTE Students, Teachers, and Administrators. We do require that students be chaperoned by a CTE Staff Member. Due to space limitations and to assist in planning for the event, we do ask that all those attending please register in advance. CTE Student Displays nd As part of the 2 annual CTE Student Leadership Civic Engagement Day a limited number of display tables are available for schools and programs to showcase CTE in the State of Washington. Displays are limited to 6’ in size. Schools should plan to have students host the display throughout the day to educate the public about their programs. Participating programs are also encouraged to meet with members of the legislature throughout the day. The purpose of the displays is to showcase student projects and how CTE Programs are preparing students to be Career and College Ready.
