We are once again fortunate to have the AARP Tax-Aide volunteers along
with Coordinator Ernie Johnson here at EdSC to help with filing tax returns.
This year they will be here on Fridays, beginning February 6th and running
through April 10th. For help filing your return, you must sign up for an
appointment at the front desk. Appointments are One Hour in length and are
FREE. Pick up your tax preparation packet at the front desk and complete the
AARP Intake and Interview Form to the best of your ability. You must bring:
Social Security cards for all taxpayers listed on your return, Picture ID and
all W2’s and 1099’s

2014 A HISTORIC YEAR
2014 was truly a historic year for the Edmonds
Senior Center (EdSC). We began a journey
which will see the construction of a new senior/
community center on this extraordinary waterfront site. The new Center building will be
owned by EdSC with a ground lease with the
City who will maintain the Regional Park. We
are just working through the legal details of this with the City and anticipate
having an agreement in January. The City Council, Mayor Earling, and City
staff have all been supportive partners in this effort.
Key events during the year included the January 21 Special
Membership Meeting which enthusiastically supported the project, the
March 18 City Council unanimous Resolution 1313 endorsing the project
and reaffirming this site as the permanent home of the senior center, and a
joint unanimous County supporting resolution on June 4. On May 18 the
Center’s Board of Directors unanimously endorses the goal of building a
new senior/community center and establishes a Capital Campaign Committee with Rose Cantwell and Diane Buckshnis as co-chairs. That Committee

All through the year the Strategic Planning Committee led by chair
Steve Bernheim and vice chair Phil Lovell has provided guidance, wise
counsel and direction to the process. They insisted on “due diligence” in
two primary spheres – political and legal. They also stressed the relationship
between design and program. As a result we have engaged legal counsel, had
conceptual drawings done by two architectural firms, and worked with City
and County Councils and State legislators.
MILESTONES ACHIEVED IN 2014
2014 was the final year of our three year contract with Bastyr
University to provide a natural medicine program at the senior center. We
have agreed on a new contract going forward. This summer we began to
offer a second shift on Wednesdays. The wait times for appointments has
been dramatically reduced. Younger people are now starting to come as the
program is available to all ages. We celebrated our relationship with Bastyr in
an Open House on November 12. Special thanks to the Peg and Rick Young
Foundation for their continuing support of the Bastyr Clinic.
2014 was also the third year of our partnership with the Verdant
Health Commission funding the Enhance Wellness Program. Their funding
has doubled for the next three years and has enabled us to offer the PEARLS
Program for Depression in conjunction with the UW Health Promotion
Research Center. Finally, this was the third year of hosting the South Snohomish County Cold Weather Shelter for the Homeless in conjunction with
four local churches who provide groups of very dedicated volunteers who
staff the Shelter.

LADIES AUXILLIARY OF THE VFW INVITES YOU!
We are conductiong our annual membership drive for
eligible ladies to join the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United States.
Membership in the Ladies Auxiliary is limited to
wives, widows, mothers, foster and stepmothers (who have
performed the duties of parent), grandmothers, daughters,
granddaughters, foster and stepdaughters and stepsisters (who
attained that status prior to age 16) of persons who were or are
eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the
United States. Members must be citizens of the United States,
or United States Nationals, and not less than 16 years old.
If you are eligible for membership, we would certainly
like to have you join our organization. To establish eligibility,
we need a copy of the Veterans service discharge or separation
certification (DD-214) and other papers such as travel orders,
pay etc.
Women eligible for membership in the VFW shall be
eligible for dual membership in the Ladies Auxiliary.

ask for information on the ladies Auxiliary. If no one answers,
be sure and leave your telephone number and name so we can
respond to your call.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR
We had over 50 tables fill the upstairs and downstairs with
many, many wonderful items at our annual holiday bazaar. The
shoppers came at a steady flow and made lots of purchases,
both at the bazaar booths and in our thrift store! Many thanks
to Rick Henry of Foss Home & Village for sponsoring the event
this year! We appreciate your support!
BASTYR OPEN HOUSE
The Open House for our on-site Bastyr Natural Medicine Clinic
was attended by a good crowd made of supporters, friends and
people interested in learning more about the clinic. Special
thanks to Dr. Laurie Cullen, ND and Dr. Joshua Rubinstein,
ND for your support and willingness to help spread the good
word about this wonderful program we have here. Thank you
also to the Bastyr University students who stayed after their
regular shift in the clinic to attend the open house as well.

A disaster is typically considered to be any event that
overwhelms the capacity of 9-1-1 and emergency responders.
So although emergency assistance will always be on the scene
after a disaster, there’s no guarantee you will be able to get
through to 9-1-1, and it’s improbable that they will be able
to respond to everyone who needs their services. The better
prepared we are as individuals, families, and at workplaces
the more likely we are to survive during a disaster and allow
emergency responders to help those in need. In this workshop
you will learn how to get prepared, create a disaster plan, what
is needed in an emergency supply kit along with other very
useful information.

The Edmonds Senior Center thrift store is
in need of your donations! After it’s recent
remodel, the store now has an additional
500 square feet of space, new flooring and
fresh paint. The re-newed store is now
very spacious and open. Come find some
treasures down by the beach. As a non-profit
501(c)3 corporation, your donations to the
thrift store are tax deductible. Call Dave
at 425-319-1234 if you need help to haul
your donations. The store is located at 220
Railroad Ave just south of the ferry dock,
we’re open Monday through Friday from
10am – 3:30pm and Saturdays from 11am
to 4pm.
