The Baptism of the Lord
January 11, 2015
You do not know the good you do.
It is after He is baptized by John that Jesus begins the Public Ministry. Our own Baptism has brought about a profound
change in us – removing original sin, establishing us as a member of the Body of Christ and instilling in us Grace. That Grace
was apparent in this Christmas Season. These are a few thoughts of the Christmas Season that ends today with this feast of the
Baptism of the Lord.
Assembling the Christmas crèches, decorating the sanctuary and the overall preparations were made delightful with the
parishioners participating who lent a steady hand, a strong back and an artistic eye. They offered and received a real and
profound joy in giving of themselves for the upcoming celebrations. If you were unable to join in either effort this year, mark
your calendars for December 2015. It is a uniquely satisfying way to engage the Christmas spirit.Remember: the deepest and
most meaningful kind of satisfaction over gifts is giving them away. What greater gift can you give but yourself and your time?
And in doing so you get so much more in return.
The great size of the crowds of people is a sign of something. Let’s assume that the new faces we saw were all from
out of town. They were visiting relatives for the Christmas holidays and chose to be with us on those sacred days.
The overflow Mass at 4:10 was a glowing success. Seats were had by most all who wanted them and there were still a
few people standing. Upstairs, the Church was just as full and the celebrations in both venues reflected a serious approach to
our happy duty that Christmas Eve is to thank our Lord for being born among us; becoming one like us so that we can become
like Him.
What was the greatest source of satisfaction this Christmas season for you? I can name mine. It was the Giving Tree
and all the donations assembled for the Sacred Heart Home. And more than that, the fact that it served as a catalyst for others to
do so much more good than we were able to accomplish. When we began this year’s efforts there seemed to be some confusion
as to why these gifts were being sought. A bottle of cologne or bedroom slippers or hand cream or towels and washcloths did
not seem like much. Crossword and puzzle books, nightgowns and pajamas, slippers and men's electric shavers hardly seems
like the stuff that we are accustomed to giving. They seem so inconsequential. You do not know the good you do. Great things
are often accomplished by small means.
My satisfaction was initially achieved in the response of our characteristically generous parishioners. Unloading bag
after bag of gifts on to the stage in Conahan Hall to be further sorted and loaded to a truck to be delivered to its ultimate
destination.
The idea for this recipient of the Giving Tree gifts this year came from a story entitled: A Memoir of Mary Ann. It is
by Flannery O’Connor. She is approached by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne to write a book about a little girl, Mary Ann,
who was a resident at their “home for incurables” in Atlanta. O’Connor initially resists but eventually yields and tells the story
of Mary Ann as well as Nathaniel Hawthorne’s own experience in a poor house in Liverpool, England and how an unfortunate
rheumy little boy changed his life. This lead mysteriously to his daughter’s conversion to Catholicism and then her founding the
community of Sisters to care for indigent cancer patients. This all leads to us here at Immaculate Conception and our
connection, in and through Grace, to Hawthorne and O’Connor and Rose Hawthorne Lawthrop/Mother Alphonsa to Mary Ann
and the current residents at Sacred Heart Home.
I am talking about the reality that we are all brothers and sisters in the Lord Christ with God as our Father. And upon
us has been cast a responsibility for others; especially the poor and those in need. We are all connected in a spiritual and
mystical bond that is more real than anything that can be seen or touched.
On Monday December 29th the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a front page story on the Sacred Heart Home. In it our parish
received a mention because evidently our Giving Tree gifts arrived as the reporter was on site gathering data for the story. It is
not the publicity that is most delightful. I have heard that after the story ran the Home received even more donations, financial
and other wise, from our parishioners and beyond our parish.
You do not know the good you do.
The deepest and most meaningful kind of satisfaction over gifts is giving them away. Thank you for all the gifts that
you have given this Christmas Season. In giving you become the gift that you offer. Jesus came to offer Himself. Our actions
and lives can be moments of Grace for others throughout the year, not just in this wonderful Season of Christmas.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Each month, in preparation for the
World Meeting of Families, our parish
is reflecting on one chapter from the
catechism Love is Our Mission: The
Family Fully Alive. January 2015:
Chapter 3: The Meaning of Human Sexuality “Love is Our
Mission” because God created us for a reason: to love us, and
for us to love one another (Chapter 1). God’s covenant with
Israel and the Church reveals what God’s love is like: tender
and passionate, but also steadfast and sacrificial (Chapter 2). In
Chapter 3, we learn that the bodily, earthly world has spiritual
significance. Tangible things - sacramentals, acts of charity,
sacred art and culture, our liturgical feasts and fasts - have the
capacity to reveal the glory of God. Marriage, as one of the
sacraments, reveals this to us in a special way. The bodies of
the spouses, in the complementarity of their masculinity and
femininity, have the unique role of revealing God’s nature as a
communion of life-giving love. How can a man and a woman
imitate God’s love together? How can they live in a way that is
intimate and committed, joyful and merciful, forgiving and
fertile? Through their participation in the life of the Church,
this kind of love becomes possible. God’s love is not an
audition, or a temporary experiment, or a self-seeking
negotiation. In the same way, marriage is never a private,
inward romance, but always discovers its true nature in relation
to God and his wider purposes. A sacramental marriage is
called to be a little parable of God’s love, always ordered to
joy and service. All Catholic sexual ethics flow from these
ideas. In our next chapter, we will reflect in depth on marriage,
followed by the next chapter about celibacy. –Dr. Christopher
