The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son
and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the
covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy
Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Please be seated.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Lord speaks to us in scripture and preaching about the revealing of his Son Jesus in his baptism.
A Reading from the Book of Genesis
Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and
darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then
God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God
separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

The Psalm 29
The choir sings antiphon then congregation repeats antiphon. Choir sings verses and the choir and
congregation sing antiphon as indicated.
Antiphon
Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, *
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; *
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; *
the LORD is upon the mighty waters.
Antiphon
The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; *
the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor.
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; *
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
Antiphon
The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; *
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
2
The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe *
and strips the forests bare.
And in the temple of the LORD *
all are crying, "Glory!"
Antiphon
The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; *
the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore.
The LORD shall give strength to his people; *
the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace.
Antiphon
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 19:1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where
he found some disciples. He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became
believers?" They replied, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." Then he said, "Into
what then were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism." Paul said, "John baptized with
the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is,
in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his
hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied-altogether there were about twelve of them.

“The sinless one to Jordan came”
vv. 1,2,3
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark
People
Solemnis haec festivitas
Mark 1:4-11
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness
of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going
out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was
clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He
proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop
down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit."
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just
as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a
3
dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well
pleased."

Thanksgiving Over the Water
The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying
People
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Celebrant
People
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of
creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of
promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the
Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into
everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his
death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in
joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing
them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are
cleansed from sin and born again may continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
The Baptism
The candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, and the following is said
Peyton, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Chrismation
Peyton, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever. Amen.

The Asperges
The celebrant sprinkles the congregation with baptismal water, saying
Remember your baptism.
During the Asperges the choir and congregation sing,
Celebrant continues
Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed
upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her,
O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to
persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen.

Offertory Anthem
“A Spotless Rose”
Paul Mealor
A spotless rose is growing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers' foreshowing, of Jesse
promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and the dark midnight. The
rose which I am singing, whereof Isiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest maid;
through God's great love and might the blessed babe she bare us. Now sleeps the crimson petal.
Amen.
