Happy 2015 and welcome to our exciting
new programme.
Our New Year’s resolution at the SEAC is to
showcase the very best of local, national and
international artistic talent and we hope you enjoy
what we have in store for you all. The Naul’s finest
arts centre is the perfect place to spend a winter’s
evening or spring afternoon watching a riveting
movie, developing a new painting technique at Dave
West’s art workshop or learning a Sean Nós dance
step with Edwina Guckian. If it’s music you’re after
we have an amazing line up of traditional, folk and
Americana bands all ready to entertain you. The
brilliant Laoise Kelly and Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn is a
traditional gig not to be missed. Our arts programme
is growing and getting creatively stronger with such
quality singers and musicians as Hazel O’Connor,
Cormac de Barra, David Geraghty from Bell X1, John
Spillane and (one of our favourite singers) Kimmie
Rhodes all appearing on the SEAC stage in the
coming months. We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
by inviting the legendary Kilfenora Céilí Band to
perform at our Ceilí Mór and it is sure to be a day
of dancing and craic.
Cinema, art workshops, children’s wood carving
classes, literary events and traditional singing and
music sessions are just some of the great variety
of activities and events on offer within our packed
winter programme. This is all made possible by
the continued support of our patrons and our
substantive funders Fingal County Council and
The Arts Council. Hope to see you soon and all

Our Slow Sessions are aimed towards musicians
who are learning an instrument and are at a stage
where they wish to take part in a relaxed informal
Traditional Music Session. These Sessions aim to
encourage the participants to learn a repertoire of
new tunes while playing with other musicians at
slow to moderate tempos. A list of tunes which are
regularly played at the Slow Sessions are available
to download from our website www.tseac.ie by
clicking on ‘About Us’. All welcome!
Slow Sessions are hosted by Paudie O'Connor,
a Button Accordion player well grounded in the
Sliabh Luachra tradition as well as being a nationally
recognised performer.

Many painters lament that their painting style is too
‘tight’. Artist, Barbara Craig will illustrate how she
develops her work to produce spontaneous, loose
acrylic landscapes. Barbara will show her sketchbooks
of source material; pencil, pen, colour sketches and
photographs and demonstrate how a painting
progresses from this vital ‘first hand’ information to
a finished painting injected with her own personality.
Barbara believes painting should be fun and you need
not worry too much about following rules, go with
the flow and enjoy yourself! All welcome. Please

Barbara Craig is known for her striking landscape
work; bold paintings often influenced by the weather,
of scenes captured in her mind’s eye whilst out
enjoying a ramble. Capturing instances of ordinary
everyday life, there is always humour in her work,
whatever the subject, brought to life with a
spontaneous, vigorous use of media and colour
to captivate the viewer.
Barbara’s work will be exhibited in our Easter
Snow Gallery during February and March.

Laoise Kelly (harp) and Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn
(uilleann pipes) have been performing as a duet for
two years. The combination and blend of two of
Ireland's emblematic instruments is charged with
musical history, offering a journey into a rich sound
of melodies, coloured by chordal and percussive
accompaniment. Laoise and Tiarnán play a repertoire
taken from the wide spectrum of Irish dance music
and airs from Ulster barn dances to Munster polkas,
airs from 19th century manuscripts to modern
compositions.
Tiarnán was one of the founding members of Dorsa,
which recorded 'The Wild Music of the Gael' in
1998. The E.P. 'Banks of Red Roses' was released in
2002. He toured extensively with Moya Brennan (of
Clannad) from 1997-2001 and recorded two albums,
'Whisper to the Wild Water' and 'Two Horizons'.
Laoise was a founder member of the traditional
group ‘Bumblebees’ and in 1999 she recorded
her first solo album ‘Just Harp’ to critical acclaim.
Throughout her solo career Laoise has recorded
with many of Ireland’s foremost artists including
The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon, John Hoban,
Dónal Lunny, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Tommy Makem,
Matt Molloy, Mary Black, Kathleen MacInnes as well
as Kate Bush and American country/bluegrass icon
Tim O’Brien. Highly recommended!

Hazel O'Connor performs with the celebrated Irish
harpist Cormac de Barra, in a captivating and intimate
special performance. 2013 marked the 15th anniversary
of Hazel and Cormac's first collaboration on the
biographical show, 'Beyond Breaking Glass' with
a special one-week run of the updated show at
Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Hazel's autobiography
'Breaking Glass Barefoot' has also just been published
and tells previously untold stories of her rollercoaster
ride through the highs and lows of the music business.
No O'Connor show is complete without her original
classics Will You, D-Days and Eighth Day or her new
classics Rebecca, Driftwood, I'm Still Breathing and
Acoustically Yours.
Cormac de Barra is not only one of Hazel’s co-writers
and musical partners, he has also recorded three of his

The man behind the moniker is Bell X1’s David Geraghty.
Geraghty released his debut solo album ‘Kill Your
Darlings’ in 2007, to critical and fan acclaim. The album
was also nominated for a Choice Music Prize that year.
2009 saw David return with his second solo offering ‘The
Victory Dance’. Both of these albums were written and
recorded between stints in the hectic Bell X1 touring
schedule. Similarly, Dave’s new project, ‘Join Me in the
Pines’ was written and recorded over a year and half
while on and off the road. JMITP is a return to the
somewhat isolated creative process under which his
debut album was made. This time around the process
benefits from a newly built home studio, (which was
tried and tested on the demos for Bell X1’s “Chop
Chop” album). Once again Geraghty displays his musical
skills on the new album by playing almost all of the
instruments, although it was enhanced by some great
talents from the traditional, folk and classical worlds.
Clare Finglass, who appeared on Dave’s first two albums,
again lends her voice to make one half of the backing
vocal duo. The other half being Dave’s Mammy.
“Because apart from being amazing, she works for
free”. Join Me In The Pines released their debut single
‘Joy Is A Lion’ in early 2014 to two sell out shows in
Dublin’s Unitarian Church and Coughlan's in Cork. The
next few months sees the band performing up and
down the country at a select number of venues, so make
sure you jump on those tickets fast not to miss out!

Anna, an orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to
take her vows when she’s sent to visit Wanda, her
aunt and only living relative. A cynical, hard-drinking
Communist Party judge, Wanda reveals that Anna’s
real name is Ida and that her parents were Jews
murdered during the Nazi occupation. So the two
embark on an unusual journey through the wintry
countryside to unearth their family’s dark history.

The SEAC presents a new series of intimate
conversations conducted by the novelist and poet,
Dermot Bolger, with leading Irish writers who will read
from their work and discuss the life experiences which
have helped to shape their outlook and their books.
John Sheahan is a Dublin legend. A notable Irish
violinist, tin whistle player and folk musician, he is
the last surviving member of the original and
definitive five man line-up of world famous band,
The Dubliners. He is also a composer in his own right
of such classics as The Marino Waltz and in recent
years acquired a considerable reputation as a poet.
In a public interview with the author Dermot Bolger
he will read from his poetry, reminisce about the
famous friends and musicians with whom he
embarked on a life-long journey through music
and play some of his most beloved tunes.
Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best known
writers. His ten novels include The Journey Home,
The Family on Paradise Pier and, most recently The Fall
of Ireland. His first play, The Lament for Arthur Cleary,
received the Samuel Beckett Award; his acclaimed
Ballymun Trilogy of plays has been staged in several
countries and his works translated into numerous
languages. Bolger writes for most of Ireland’s leading
newspapers and in 2012 was named Commentator
of the Year at the Irish Newspaper awards.

Sir Ernest Shackleton was among history’s great
explorers and became a legend on four epic
voyages of discovery to the Antarctic a century ago.
Shackleton’s biographer, the Polar historian Michael
Smith recalls the compelling story of a complex man
from County Kildare who touched greatness on the
ice but struggled to come to terms with home life.
Shackleton marched to within 100 miles of the
South Pole and the led the dramatic battle to survive
against the odds when his ship Endurance, was
crushed by the ice. Shackleton was a charismatic
figure who lived life “like a mighty rushing wind”
but was happiest in the icy wilderness where he
could leave behind his messy private life.
Michael Smith’s new biography of Shackleton
uncovers the man behind the legend. Michael is
the author of the popular biography of Tom Crean
and will be available to sign copies of his books
following the talk.

establishments live locally to the SEAC. We’ve asked
them to come along for an informal meet-and-greet,
serve up a tasting plate of some of their favourite
dishes and chat about their food, ingredients and what
inspires their cooking. All of this is in advance of the
wonderful, inspiring and food-y comedy, Chef.
When Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his
job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing
to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling
owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s
next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his
ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo)
and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road,
Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion
for the kitchen and zest for life and love.

Almost 100 years after his death, farm hand, road
mender, copper miner and poet, Francis Ledwidge still
haunts Irish literature. A determined Nationalist; he
was killed by a stray shell while building a road behind
the front line in Flanders just a few weeks shy of his
thirtieth birthday. He looks from old photographs,
condemned to the limbo of being forever young, but
like thousands of fellow Irishmen who died in that war
he was condemned to another limbo, the limbo of
never having their stories publicly told.

Monaghan, Walking the Road is one poet’s reimagining of another poet’s life. Hovering in the halflight of memories, it vividly and imaginatively follows

once again walking the road that he walked as a shop
boy from Rathfarnham in South County Dublin,
through North County Dublin and on to his native
Slane in County Meath. Alongside him walk the ghosts
of those who touched his life and the ghosts of other
young Irishmen from villages that he passes. Unseen,
they walk alongside him, but where are they walking
to and will any of them ever reach home?
Join us for our new Sunday Singing Circle Session,
where it’s all about the song. All singers are welcome,
especially traditional singers, but we won't turn anyone
away! This is an informal session where all participants
are encouraged to perform and share songs in a
relaxed environment. If you prefer to just listen, come

Café. The SEAC’s Sunday Sessions have established

Singer-songwriter Kimmie Rhodes is a native Texan
who calls Austin home. Kimmie’s multi-platinum

Shadows and Light are captivating audiences with
their intimate show on the iconic singer-songwriter,
Joni Mitchell, receiving a standing ovation at their
recent Culture Night performance in the magnificent
St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. Their stunning
interpretations are performed by vocalist Maura
Vambeck, Dave Mulligan, guitar and Paul Enright,
keyboard. The show features songs from the huge
Joni Mitchell repertoire, including classics from her

Born in 1929. Thomas Ryan attended the Limerick
School of Art, then the National College of Art in
Dublin, where he studied under Seán Keating and
Maurice McGonigle. In 1957 he first exhibited at
the RHA and became an associate member in 1968.
He has had many commissions for portraits and he
is also well known for his sensitive still-life paintings
and for his Irish historical scenes, especially those of
the 1916 Rising. He has exhibited at the Municipal
Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin and was President
of the RHA from 1982 to 1992.
We are delighted that Thomas Ryan PPRHA will be
in attendance to officially open his exhibition, which
continues at our Easter Snow Gallery until the end
of May.

Presented by 'Your Man's Puppets' & Boris Hunka,
'The Musical Menagerie Puppet Show' features the
story of two zoo-keepers reminiscing about their first
days in the job. A tall tail tale is told about a Gibbon
that lost his tail, while meeting exotic animals from
far and wide, including Sheridan the Sloth, Imelda
the Rhino Hornbill, Kevin the Snake and Gilbert - the
Gibbon who’s lost his groove.
This magical musical is told with all original songs
including "I’m a Lean Mean Sleeping Machine”,
“The Rainforest Jive” to name but two. The animals
combine breath-taking realism with elements of
fantasy that have become the trademark of Your

Michigan-born percussive dancer Nic Gareiss and
Edinburgh harpist Maeve Gilchrist met while
teaching at the Shasta Fiddle Summit in Northern
California. They continued their musical relationship
with spontaneous collaborations at festivals and
chance meetings and later toured together as part of
Darol Anger's band, 'The Furies', finally making their
duo debut at the Celtic Connections festival in
Glasgow, Scotland. Sharing a deep respect for
traditional music and culture while drawing on
contemporary elements of music, movement, rhythm
and improvisation, Nic and Maeve have emerged
from the vibrant new acoustic scene as innovators in
their fields. The percussion and drive of Nic's
footwork combined with Maeve's melodic and
improvisational sensibilities make for an explosive
duet sure to delight both the ears and the eyes.

This April sees the beginning of a much-anticipated
national tour from two of this Island's most
acclaimed Singer/Songwriters. With legendary
histories behind them of hard earned status, Leslie
with her earlier career with 'In Tua Nua' and Mike
with the famed 'Stockton’s Wing' combine to
present a powerful and innovative force on stage.
Between them to date, they are lauded for
retrospective classic hits such as 'Beautiful Affair',
'Walkaway', 'Freedom' and Leslie's signature tune,
'Wonderful Thing'.
Their replication of collected and intriguing tunes
combined with dynamic originals never fail to
enchant their audience. Partners in crime since 2009,
they recently recorded a version of Anthony and the

Sister' which will be available for download this year.

The SEAC presents a new series of intimate
conversations conducted by the novelist and poet,
Dermot Bolger, with leading Irish writers who will read
from their work and discuss the life experiences which
have helped to shape their outlook and their books.
Deirdre Purcell enjoyed careers in broadcasting with
RTE, in journalism as an acclaimed feature writer and
in acting with the Abbey Theatre before she became
the best-selling author of many celebrated novels,
including A Place of Stones, Falling for a Dancer
(which was filmed, starring Liam Cunningham),
Love Like Hate Adore (which was short-listed for the
Orange Prize), Tell me Your Secret, Pearl and most
recently the bestselling The Winter Gathering. In 2006
she published her acclaimed memoir, Diamonds and
Holes in My Shoes and her vivid explorations of Dublin
life, Follow Me Down to Dublin appeared in 2007.
She now lives in Meath. In conversation with Dermot
Bolger, she discusses the twists and turns in her life
which led her to becoming an much-admired author.
Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best known
writers. His ten novels include The Journey Home,
The Family on Paradise Pier and, most recently The Fall
of Ireland. His first play, The Lament for Arthur Cleary,
received the Samuel Beckett Award; his acclaimed
Ballymun Trilogy of plays has been staged in several
countries and his works translated into numerous
languages. Bolger writes for most of Ireland’s leading
newspapers and in 2012 was named Commentator of
the Year at the Irish Newspaper awards.

to decorate the SEAC’s landmark red
chestnut tree. This year, we are again
looking for knitters and we hope to
decorate the tree, the old telephone box
and more. The Cottage Café is kindly
offering a scone and tea/coffee for only €2

These classes will cover a broad range of disciplines
and media from drawing with pencil and charcoal
to pastel and paint. Dave is an experienced art tutor
who has taught both privately and in public art
centres. He is also a practicing artist who has
mounted numerous solo exhibitions as well as
exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal
Ulster Academy, Royal West of England Academy,
the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal
Society of Oil Painters. He is a regular exhibitor at
the British Pastel Society where he won the 2013
Schminke Award for pastel.

Come along and let Ronan and Elaine from
Newbridge Willow Design teach you the traditional
art of making a St. Brigid’s Cross and other simple
traditional customs associated with the feast day
of St. Brigid (which is celebrated on February 1st).
Many rituals are associated with the making of the
crosses, it was traditionally believed that a Brigid’s
Cross protects the house from fire and evil. The
cross, made from rushes, is hung in many kitchens
for this purpose. This workshop is suitable for adults
and children aged 9+
Younger children are also welcome, but must
be accompainied and supervised by an adult
at all times.

Edwina Guckian comes from outside the village of
Drumsna in Co. Leitrim. Edwina has taught her steps
and style all over the world sharing the stage with
some of Ireland’s most influential acts such as De
Danann, Dervish, Cherish the Lades, Sliabh Notes,
Martin Hayes, Séamus Begley etc. Most recently,
Edwina worked as choreographer on director Ken
Loach’s latest film, Jimmy’s Hall, nominated for the
Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. In 2013 Edwina
could be seen sean nós dancing at the Rose of Tralee
when she represented the Rose of Leitrim. As Edwina
says herself, “There’s no right or wrong in sean nós
dancing. It’s all about how you want to dance,
finding your own style, dancing with the musician,
interpreting the music that flows out of him and
spontaneously illustrating the tune through
movement”.

Following the success of the last Willow Basket
workshop held during Autumn, we are delighted
to run another for those of you who missed out last
time round. Learn the basics of weaving and how
to make a willow basket with Ronan and Elaine of
Newgrange Willow Design.
Starting with a pairing weave to make a round base,
you’ll be instructed how to “stake up, weave on the
upset, weave the sides using waling and ranging,
and how to finish the top with a five rod border”.
After all that, if time permits, you can also add
a handle to your basket!

Learn the art of woodcarving with Craft Worker
Terry O’Brien.
Wood carving is a form of working wood by means
of a cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel by
two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one
hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or in
the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. In
this full-day workshop you will carve a beautiful leaf
shaped bowl which is picked from a number of
designs.
All materials provided.

Join Christien Van Bussel for a fun pottery workshop
and make a Hen/Bird Money box or an Easter Bowl
using clay. The finished items will be fired, glazed
and brought back to the SEAC for collection.

Learn the art of wood carving with Terry O'Brien.
In this two-hour workshop you will learn how to
carve a beautiful, small, leaf shaped bowl.
All materials provided.

Please note, to participate in the workshop, some
percussive dance experience (tap, flamenco, Irish
dance, sean-nós, etc.) is required.
Utilizing improvisation, organic movement, and
drawing from a myriad of percussive dance styles
including Irish step dance, Appalachian flat-footing,
and Quebecois gigue, this class explores the sheer
musical potential of your feet.
Michigan-born dancer, musician, and dance
researcher Nic Gareiss has been described by the Irish
Times as “the human epitome of the unbearable
lightness of being,” and "the most inventive and
expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston
Herald. His choreographic work re-imagines
movement as a musical activity, recasting dance as
medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss
draws from many percussive dance traditions to
weave together a dance technique facilitating his love
of improvisation, traditional footwork vocabulary, and
musical collaboration. He has performed with many
of the luminaries of contemporary traditional music
and dance, including The Chieftains, The Gloaming,
Dervish, Buille and Liz Carroll.

Drop in, or call us on (01) 8020898 from 10am to
5pm, Monday to Friday, and during the time of
most events.
Most major credit and debit cards accepted.
Tickets cannot be reserved without payment.
The Cottage Café &
Pre-Event Supper
The Cottage Café at the SEAC is open 7
days a week, 10am - 5pm serving all day
breakfast and fresh, home-cooked lunch
specials. Late opening is in conjunction
with all SEAC events, serving a range of
evening meals and wine menu.
At most, but not all events, concessions are
available to under 12s, our Friends/Members,
those in receipt of state pension, students and
those in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance/Benefit.
Proof of entitlement for concession tickets must be
presented when collecting tickets from the Box
Office.
We do not offer refunds or exchanges on tickets
unless a performance has sold out, in which case
we will do our best to resell your tickets for you.

In an attempt to reduce our environmental impact,
tickets will only be printed for collection or
delivered by post when requested. Your booking
details will be held at our Box Office and ticket
holders can check-in upon arrival at the venue.

event at the SEAC.
We do not have numbered/allocated seating.
Seating is available on a "first-come, first-served"
basis.
Main course, dessert & tea/coffee, only

We operate an "All Ages Welcome" policy at most
events. Please check event details. At performance
events children must be seated and accompanied
by an adult.
Once an event has commenced, you will be asked
to wait for a suitable break in the performance
before entering the venue.
"Doors Open" times and event start times may
vary. Please check your ticket, or our website, to
confirm the times for a particular event.
The SEAC is fully wheelchair accessible. If you have
any special access requirements, please inform the
Box Office when making your booking to ensure
that we can assist you.

By road
Take the M1 Motorway and get off at
Exit 6 (sign-posted for Balbriggan and
Naul). When you take Exit 6, follow
the signs at the top of the Exit ramp
for ‘Naul’. The Village is approximately
5km from the M1 Motorway exit.
When you reach Naul village, we are
housed in the Thatched Cottages
immediately on your left-hand side.
By train
The train station closest to the SEAC
is Balbriggan, approximately 8.5km.
Please visit www.irishrail.ie for details of
train services to and from Balbriggan.
Taxis are generally available from
Balbriggan town to the SEAC.
By bus
By bus; unfortunately there is no
direct bus route to Naul. Please

Arts Centre
Séamus Ennis, Master Uilleann Piper,
Storyteller and Folklore Archivist was
born in 1919 at Jamestown Lodge in
Finglas, North County Dublin in the
area traditionally known as Fingal.
His family however came from the
village of Naul, to which Séamus
returned to spend the last years of
his life. Although best known as an
Uilleann Piper, Séamus dedicated
much of his life to collecting and
recording traditional music, song
and folklore throughout Ireland and
Britain for a variety of organisations.
Dedicated to the memory of Séamus
Ennis, the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre
is a multi-disciplinary Arts Centre,
which aims to develop and maintain
Arts & Cultural activities in rural Fingal.
The SEAC runs year round activities
including Concerts, Theatre, Traditional
Irish Music Sessions, Cinema, Comedy,
Talks, Music Tuition, Craft Workshops
& Art Exhibitions.
