The Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band
from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop,
Virginia is an area rich in the old time music
tradition; this band has deep roots in mountain
music. The members have done much to preserve
the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and
banjo picking and are legendary musicians and
teachers of the style. The band originated with
Albert Hash in the 1940s, a well-known and beloved
fiddler and luthier who had a tremendous impact on
the old time and bluegrass scene. Today, the band is
carried on by Thornton Spencer (fiddle), Emily
Spencer (banjo and vocals) and their daughter, multiinstrumentalist and dancer, Martha Spencer. Jackson
Cunningham plays mandolin, guitar, claw-hammer
banjo, harmonica and Debbie Bramer plays bass and
also dances. Ersel Fletcher, a retired coal-miner from
Buchanan County, is the newest member of the
band on guitar and vocals. For their first Irish tour,
the band will be joined by multi-instrumentalist,
Chris Testerman (in place of Thornton Spencer on
fiddle). Renowned for their high energy and
charisma on stage, Whitetop Mountain Band shows
contain everything from fiddle/banjo instrumentals to
powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues, classic
country, honky-tonk, traditional bluegrass numbers,
old timey ballads, originals, four part mountain
gospel songs and flat foot dancing. Definitely not to
be missed!

Dervla O'Flaherty, an artist from North County Dublin
completed her BA in Fine Art Painting at the National
College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin in 2012
and Post-Graduate studies at Cyprus College of Art
in 2014. Dervla received several student and
graduate awards following her BA Degree show
including ‘RDS Student Art Awards and travelling

‘Encounters’ (an OPW/DFP exhibition and publication
- travelling to four destinations throughout Ireland).
Dervla has exhibited widely in Ireland and Cyprus,
and has upcoming exhibitions in Edinburgh, Belfast
and Iceland.
Dervla’s interests within her current painting series
‘places I am looking for’, are derived from active
engagement with ideas of place and space, often
focusing on the reimagining of place that comes into
play in conjunction with memory, recounting and
retelling. Her work is influenced by colours, forms
and milieu of places she has travelled, picking up
narrative from myth, stories and imagination, and
becoming new places inhabited by memory,
experience and longing.

In Dylan, Dylan and Me, Dublin-born Jackie Hayden
traces how he discovered Dylan Thomas through Bob
Dylan, and also explains how Bob Dylan’s fascination
with the Clancy Brothers challenged his initial disdain
for Irish trad and folk music. He illustrates his key
points with recordings that include both Dylans.
Hayden has delivered Dylan, Dylan and Me at venues
ranging from the RDS in Dublin to arts venues in
Cardigan, Wexford and Ballina. As part of the 100th
anniversary of Thomas’ birth he has also been invited
to contribute to a celebratory event in Fishguard in
October 2014.
Hayden has lived in Wexford since 1996. He has
published 10 books, including A Map of Love (about
the poet Dylan Thomas), and My Boy, the number
one bestselling story of rock star Phil Lynott based on
interviews with Lynott’s mother Philomena. Hayden
has also edited several books. As Contributing Editor

Two of Scotland’s most revered multi-instrumentalists,
Mairearad Green and Anna Massie are a truly
captivating duo, providing a highly energetic
performance with an instantly warm and friendly
stage presence. Having played alongside each other
for over ten years, they revel in an intuitive approach
to each other’s musical ideas and interpretations, and
an "almost telepathic communication" on stage.
Now based in Glasgow, Mairearad and Anna both
grew up in the Scottish Highlands amidst very similar
musical backgrounds and so share an innate
understanding of Scottish culture and music. As a duo
they have enjoyed many successes, including five stars
in The Scotsman and high praise from KT Tunstall,
becoming a much-loved live act. Both award-winners,
Mairearad and Anna can also, individually, be seen
performing with a number of well-known bands and
artists; The Poozies, Blazin’ Fiddles, Bella Hardy, and
Box Club, and together they join Scotland’s one and
only Celtic Big Band, The Unusual Suspects.

Laghdú, the title of the debut album by Caoimhín
Ó Raghallaigh and Dan Trueman, translates as a
lessening, a decrease, a reduction. The music they
have written stretches and abstracts the DNA of
Norwegian and Irish fiddling; the result is something
new, sparse and stunning. It ranges from the nearsilent to the nigh-on orchestral, at times exploding
joyously from their hybrid 10-string fiddles, at times
barely there, holding time still. Utterly unique, this is
music of an exceptional and unusual beauty.
Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh has released ten CDs to
date, including the debut album from The Gloaming,
which reached #1 in the Irish music charts. He has
performed far and wide, from New York’s Lincoln
Center, to London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney
Opera House.
Composer, fiddler, and electronic musician, Dan
Trueman began studying violin at the age of 4,
and decades later, fell in love with the Norwegian
Hardanger fiddle. Dan has worked Trollstilt and
QQQ, the American Composers Orchestra, So
Percussion, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Brentano
and Daedelus string quartets, the Crash Ensemble,
across America, Ireland, and Norway. He is Professor
of Music at Princeton University, where he teaches
counterpoint, electronic music, and composition.
“This music defies genre, it's just a beautiful,
spacious and luscious soundscape.Everyone should
hear this.” Martin Hayes

elements of Reggae, Jazz, Soul, Samba and West
African rhythms with Ines Khai's voice rising above

Their sound underlines the cultural ancestry of the
African people from Guadeloupe, mainly from the
area between Senegal & The Congo. Ines’ amazing
vocal range is accompanied by a fabulous line-up of
seasoned and diverse musicians; including one of
Ireland's top bassists, Jerome Rimson (from Detroit),
two Congolese musicians from Ireland's best traveled
African Band (The Lace) Daniel Muyombo & Troca on
electric guitar & Drum Kit respectively and Ireland's
Patrick Naughton playing Djembe, percussion &

“A truly fantastic performance that swept me clean

“Make sure you catch Pitak early, so you can say that
you were there first."
Brian Keenan grew up in Belfast.
From 1990 he spent four years living in
the West of Ireland, decompressing
from the previous four and a half years
which he spent being held as a
hostage in Lebanon. Since 1995 he
has resided in Dublin. His first book,
An Evil Cradling, an account of his captive years in
Lebanon, won the International Time-Life PEN Award,
The Christopher Award (New York) The Irish Times
Award and the Ewart Biggs Award. Since then he has
written two travel books, Between Extremes and Four
Quarters of Light; a novel Turlough and a memoir, I'll
Tell Me Ma. He is currently writing a book of short
stories mined from his recent travels in Lebanon, a free
man hopelessly captivated! He will read from his work
and discuss his life with Dermot Bolger in a
conversation which will be opened out to the
audience.
Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best
known writers. His ten novels include
The Journey Home, The Family on
Paradise Pier and, most recently The
Fall of Ireland. His first play, The
Lament for Arthur Cleary, received the
Samuel Beckett Award; his acclaimed
Ballymun Trilogy of plays has been staged in several
countries and his works translated into numerous
languages. Bolger writes for most of Ireland’s leading
newspapers and in 2012 was named Commentator of

Scottish-born guitarist, singer, songwriter and
unparalleled interpreter of traditional and
contemporary folk songs, Dick Gaughan has been
called “the Scottish Woody Guthrie” for the depth,
passion and political conviction of his music. For more
than 35 years, Gaughan has been forging an incredible
musical legacy. He recorded his first of many solo
albums in 1971 before joining the Boys of the Lough,
one of the very first internationally touring Celtic
bands, in time for their first album. Dick is deeply
committed to fighting social injustice and standing up
for the common man in the face of oppression. His
unwavering belief in the strength of the human spirit
to conquer seemingly insurmountable obstacles has
influenced his willingness to sing new songs and
rework old ones to accentuate an essential optimism
and belief in humanity’s ability to stand up and be
free. In this, he has become a leading voice in the
topical song movement, inspiring a generation of
songwriters that includes Billy Bragg, who says,
“Gaughan is one of my favorite artists and has been
a tremendous influence on my career.”
Special guests, Gráinne Brady & Tina Jordan Rees,

Join us for a special screening of Unbreakable, The
Mark Pollock Story, when we’ll be joined by Mark and
Director, Ross Whitaker for an introduction and insight
into this remarkable story followed by Q&A.
Please book early to avoid disappointment!
Unbreakable tells the inspirational story of Mark
Pollock’s amazing strength and positivity in the face
of incredible obstacles throughout his life. Ten years
after losing his sight at 22, Mark Pollock became
the first blind person to race to the South Pole. The
psychological impact of that success put blindness
behind him and he moved on with his life and became
engaged to his girlfriend Simone. But three weeks
before the wedding, an accident left Mark paralysed
from the waist down and threw his life into turmoil
once again. This moving, fascinating film, six years in
the making, tells the story of Mark’s rehabilitation and
his search for groundbreaking cures in the worlds of
robotics and science.

His songs have been recorded by Vince Gill, Steve
Earle, Billy Bragg, Robert Earl Keen, Maura O’Connell,
Lucy Kaplansky and Tom Russell. Releasing 12 albums
since 1986, Greg Trooper’s latest, Incident On Willow
Street, rocketed straight to the Number 3 position on
the influential Euro Americana Chart. Raised in the
shore town of Little Silver, New Jersey, Greg became
enthralled by the greater New York area’s rich music
scene. He discovered a sort of holy musical trinity in
the work of Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Hank
Williams, with their guiding lights of passion, literary
dexterity and plainspoken honesty. It’s one reason
Trooper’s music feels equally informed by Memphis
soul, Greenwich Village folk and Nashville twang.
Trooper has made an impact on the music scenes in
all the places he’s lived since leaving home after high
school: Austin, Texas, Lawrence, Kansas, Nashville
and New York. Music critics praise his poetic feel,
infectious melodies and insightful lyrics. Don’t miss
this opportunity to experience “great stuff from one
of the great American songwriters.” Bob Harris,
BBC Radio2
“Greg Trooper has got to be on our list of our finest
contemporary songwriters.” Billy Bragga

Graphic Studio Gallery is delighted to showcase the
work of their studio members and gallery artists at
our Easter Snow Gallery. This is a unique opportunity
to see a selection of original fine art prints by
renowned Printmakers, some of which were part of
a wonderful exhibition inspired by The National
Botanic Gardens Dublin. Graphic Studio Gallery is
the oldest fine art print gallery in Dublin, centrally
situated in the Temple Bar district, through the
archway on Cope Street, behind the Central Bank
building. It deals exclusively in contemporary original
prints: etchings, photo etchings, lithographs,
carborundum prints, screen prints and wood and lino
block prints by prominent and emerging artists. Since
its foundation in 1988 it has become an integral
cultural feature of the city.
Open for public viewing daily, 10am–5pm from
Sunday November 2nd for 8 weeks.
Since 2003, Éric Beaudry (Les Frères Brunet, La
Bottine Souriante, Celtic Fiddle Festival), André
Brunet (Les Langues Fourchures, La Bottine
Souriante) and Pierre-Luc Dupuis (La Galvaude, Ni
Sarpe Ni Branche and Norouet, La Bottine Souriante)
have been exploring and performing time-honoured
melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s
musical past. Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica,
guitar, bouzouki and a number of other instruments,
these three virtuosos blend boundless energy with
the unmistakable joie de vivre found only in
traditional Quebec music. In fact, the only thing
missing from this magnificent musical blend is you!
So come enjoy an evening unlike any other with De

Yes Productions present a brand new play by Mark
Wale (Bad Sunday), performed by Declan Mills (The
Monuments Men) and directed by Tara Derrington
(You Are Here). The construction industry is in crisis.
Sacked from his job, Arthur punches his brother-in-law
boss, Bill. The fallout from the punch is devastating for
Arthur and his wife, Jenny. As they struggle to recover
by building a house on their own land, the mounting
pressure fractures their relationship. When Jenny
discovers she’s pregnant, Arthur’s obsession with
bricks and mortar polarises them even further, forcing
Jenny into the arms of the enemy. Is Arthur ready to
take full responsibility for his choices? Arthur’s Dig
charts one man’s epic struggle to bulldoze through the
crash and build his own future. A virtuoso solo
performance that ranges from city to country, from
despair to hope, filling the stage with colourful
characters guaranteed to win the hearts of anyone
who has ever dreamed of creating their own home.
“…Mills is impressive in a non-stop action
performance.” – Irish Mail On Sunday
“Wale o ers an extremely thought-provoking account
of someone at the coal face of the property collapse
and Mills shines in a demanding, multi-faceted
performance.” - Metro Herald
“Declan Mills really brings Wale’s script to life… a
stunning portrayal of Arthur’s unbreakable resolve to
build a house.” - Le Cool
“Wale has considerable word mastery... an energetic
and feeling performance from Declan Mills under Tara
Derrington’s direction.” - Sunday Independent

Glasnevin Cemetery is the final resting place of 1.5
million souls; it is Ireland’s national necropolis. One
Million Dubliners reveals the often unspoken - stories
of ritual, emotion, history, and the business of death.
But this is a film about life: the Saint Valentine’s rush
in the florists, American visitors searching for
ancestors, earthy gravediggers and musicians in
celebration. Above all, it’s the story of an immensely
engaging tour guide shepherding his charges, and
us, through the headstones and monuments; it’s a
documentary film that offers a glimpse into the
unknown, a world that we will all come to share.
Often humorous, always affecting, One Million
Dubliners explores life, death and the afterlife, and
ends in a way that will stay with you forever. Even in
a cemetery you never quite get used to death.

Good-natured Ahlo has no idea of the tragic
circumstances, which surrounded his birth. His
childhood seems to be ill-fated: when his family has
to leave their village to make way for a dam, a
terrible accident follows. Together with his father
and grandmother, he is sent to a camp where he
incurs the wrath of the other camp-dwellers. They
soon make up their mind that Ahlo is cursed and
brings bad luck. His only friend is Kia, who lives with
her uncle Purple and knows all too well what it’s like
to be an outcast. The group’s search for a new home
leads them through the Laotian outback. Here, they
come across a rocket festival that holds an entire
village on tenterhooks. At last, Ahlo sees a chance to
prove he is lucky rather than cursed and he takes
part in the dangerous competition. The Rocket
combines this boy’s moving story with a fascinating
insight into living conditions in a country shaped by
poverty and superstition.

Discover the life and musical career of the iconic Irish
singer Delia Murphy by her niece Carmen Cullen,
with an illustrated talk and renditions of some of
Delia’s best known songs, sung by Carmen with
musician Gerry Anderson. Known as “The Queen of
Connemara”, Delia Murphy was a pioneering figure
in Irish folk music and Remember Delia Murphy
highlights the pivotal role she played in the
development of Irish song, in particular the Irish
ballad. From performing at campfires at a young age
in her native Mayo in the early 1900's, being one of
the first Irish female performers on RTE, earning her
name as the leading Irish female balladeer and as
wife to Thomas Kiernan, Irish Ambassador in many
countries. As well as assisting Hugh O'Flaherty (the
"Vatican pimpernel") in hiding Jews and escaped
allied soldiers from the Nazis, Delia led a very
interesting life up to her death in 1971. Decades
before the Clancy Brothers, Delia Murphy
popularised many Irish Folk Songs, bringing them to
the attention of international audiences and giving
them a respectability at home. Carmen will also read
from her published biographical novel, Two Sisters
Singing and using a simple wind-up gramophone,
evokes a past era. Included in the set are The Queen
of Connemara, Courtin' in the Kitchen, The Spinning
Wheel Song, The Connemara Cradle Song, Three

The SEAC presents a new series of intimate
conversations conducted by the novelist and poet,
Dermot Bolger, with leading Irish writers who will read
from their work and discuss the life experiences which
have helped to shape their outlook and their books.
The director, novelist, screenwriter and occasional rock
and roller, Ferdia Mac Anna toured Ireland as lead
singer and songwriter with Rocky De Valera and the
Gravediggers, and later, The Rhythm Kings, before
going on to write his ground-breaking memoir of
surviving cancer, Bald Head, and three acclaimed
novels – the first of which, The Last of the High Kings,
was made into a film set in Howth, starring Gabriel
Byrne, and was recently re-issued in New Island’s
“Irish Classic Irish Fiction” series. He will read from his
acclaimed memoir, The Rocky Years: The Story of an
(Almost) Punk Legend and discuss his life and work.
Dermot Bolger is one of Ireland’s best known
writers. His ten novels include The Journey Home, The
Family on Paradise Pier and, most recently The Fall of
Ireland. His first play, The Lament for Arthur Cleary,
received the Samuel Beckett Award; his acclaimed
Ballymun Trilogy of plays has been staged in several
countries and his works translated into numerous
languages. Bolger writes for most of Ireland’s leading
newspapers and in 2012 was named Commentator of
the Year at the Irish Newspaper awards.

The Four Knocks Passage Tomb
Four Knocks is a Passage Chamber Tomb built
approximately 5000 years ago which bears the
first depiction of a human face found in
prehistoric art in Ireland. It is located
approximately 4km from Naul and 16km
southeast of Newgrange. The mound is part
of a complex of small sites in the area and is
significantly aligned with the line of Winter
Solstice sunrise from Newgrange. It’s also one
of the best vantage points in Leinster with
stunning views of the Mourne Mountains to
the North and glimpses of the Dublin Mountains
to the South.
