Green Tree School & Services sees this award as a visible way to recognize those in our community who have been at the forefront of bringing positive change to the Philadelphia region. our community individuals who are visionary leaders who are not distracted by the perceptions and misconceptions. They see a vision for what can be; they see the potential for change that when achieved, opens the door to amazing opportunities to improve the lives of the citizens of Philadelphia and ultimately have a lasting impact on our region. These individuals see how the impossible can and does become possible. Since 1957, this organization has dedicated itself to its mission of educating and supporting children who, in spite of their unique challenges, deserve the chance to realize their abilities. These children need a voice to advocate for them. They are stalwart in their determination to work towards a shared vision that brings diverse constituencies together to advocate for and create change. They are tireless workers in building consensus and what they achieve seems effortless but the reality is quite the opposite. They take on tough causes and as dedicated change agents create Lasting Legacies that will benefit our region and its citizens for generations to come. The road to helping these children is not an easy one; it is fraught with perceptions and misconceptions that individuals with special needs do not have talents and abilities and they can easily be ignored as their value as members of our community is not always readily apparent. However, through the dedication and determination of individuals who see the possibility and potential that lie deep inside these children, what many say is impossible, becomes possible. Congratulations to my friend, Steve Harmelin. I can think of no one more deserving of this award and we are thrilled to celebrate this occasion with you and those who love you. All the best, There are many issues or initiatives that are ignored; that are seen to be unsolvable or at times not recognized. However, there exists in Tricia —5— AWARD GREEN TREE SCHOOL & SERVICES’ MISSION is to discover, develop and deliver opportunities for children with unique challenges and abilities to achieve their full potential. Tonight, we celebrate the inaugural Lasting Legacy Award dinner at the Union League. This award honors individuals who have been champions for initiatives and issues that transform Philadelphia and have a lasting impact on its citizens. TONIGHT’S HONOREE IS STEPHEN J. HARMELIN, DILWORTH PAXSON, LLP. Also tonight, we celebrate the establishment of the STEPHEN AND JULIA HARMELIN FUND FOR THE ARTS AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION at Green Tree School & Services. According to Autism Asperger’s Digest, “For many with special needs, the arts are not merely enrichment. Rather, the arts are a staple, a means to develop more than cultural or appreciative values. The arts provide opportunities to develop language, cognition, fine and gross motor skills, social and life skills, self-esteem and self-expression, and even the opportunity to define potential career paths.” The Lasting Legacy Award dinner will help fund this important initiative. Julia and Stephen Harmelin —6— LASTING LEGACY AWARD STEPHEN J. HARMELIN The Lasting Legacy Award honors individuals who champion initiatives and issues that transform Philadelphia and have a lasting impact on its citizens. Stephen J. Harmelin embodies this award in so many ways. Public Library to release the document from its archives and arrange for its future display at the National Constitution Center. This was not the first time Steve worked tirelessly to return a historic document to its home state. In 2003, he worked with FBI agents to recover for North Carolina its Bill of Rights which had been missing for over 138 years. His undercover efforts in that recovery have been documented on the History Channel and in two recent best-selling books. Steve was awarded a Certificate of Distinguished Service from the Director of the FBI for his role in this recovery effort. While immersed in the daily responsibilities of lawyer/builder and law firm executive, he has won numerous awards including the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Replansky Award where peers recognize an individual who possesses extraordinary legal skills and integrity, as well as the prestigious HOBY Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award. The latter is bestowed upon individuals who serve as an inspiration to our nation’s youth; past recipients include President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, Vice President and Mrs. Al Gore, and Ted Turner. As a supporter of the Arts, Steve was honored to be a part of the legal team that negotiated the $60 million necessary to keep Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic in Philadelphia. He has served for more than a decade on the board that built the beautiful new Barnes Foundation gallery on the Parkway, as well as the boards that built both the National Constitution Center and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. He personifies the lawyer/statesmen every region needs to prosper and is a most worthy recipient of the Lasting Legacy Award. In the spring of 2013, Steve saw his five-year effort to locate and restore to Pennsylvania its original copy of the Bill of Rights realized. The document had been presumed lost and missing from the Commonwealth for almost 200 years. With Steve leading the way, Pennsylvania was able to reach an agreement with the New York —7— SPONSORS TABLE SPONSORS PROGRAM BOOK ADS Presenting Sponsor Dilworth Paxson, LLP Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer and Joe Neubauer Inside Front Cover The Honickman Family Platinum Sponsor Rob and Susan Bartow Harmelin Media Lewis Katz Gold Sponsor Mrs. Thomas J.
