girl raised as an aristocratic lady in England at the end of the
18th century. Half black and half white, Dido is the result of a
union between British naval officer, Sir Admiral John Lindsay,
and an African slave woman. When Dido’s mother dies,
making her an orphan at the age of six, her father comes to
claim her before returning to his family home at Kenwood
House in Hampstead. There he beseeches his uncle, the Earl
of Mansfield, to take the child into his care and to raise her
alongside her cousin, Elizabeth, with equality and privilege in
a manner befitting her aristocratic blood line.
Prevented from marrying because of the colour of her skin,
Dido must navigate her way past barriers of race and class.
Although she has the affection of a loving family, society
will place many constraints upon her which she must fight
to overcome if she is to discover the path to true love and
self-acceptance.

Nelly, a happily married mother and school teacher, is
haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse
and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her
relationship with Charles Dickens, with whom she discovered
an exciting but fragile complicity.
Dickens – famous, controlling and emotionally isolated
within his success – falls for Nelly, one of three sisters – all
actresses. The theatre is a vital arena for Dickens – a brilliant
amateur actor – a man more emotionally coherent in his
work, or on stage, than in life. The nature of performance
and the life of the theatre are an important part of this film,
particularly in regards to the perception of women in theatre
and the ambivalence of their position. Nelly, in some ways a
muse for Dickens, becomes the focus of his passion.
For both of them, secrecy is the price, and for Nelly a life
of “invisibility”.

Contributors Johnny Depp, Terry Gilliam & Patrick Godfrey
Johnny Depp pays a call on his friend and hero Ralph
Steadman and we take off on a high-spirited, raging and
kaleidoscopic journey discovering the life and works of one
of the most distinctive radical artists of the last 50 years.
Steadman rose to fame in the early 70’s when his satirical
drawings began to challenge establishments on both sides
of the Atlantic. He became known as the chief chronicler of
the Gonzo movement through his long term collaboration
with Hunter S. Thompson and his work on Thompson’s classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has enshrined him as the
pre-eminent counter culture artist. Featuring appearances
from Terry Gilliam, William Burroughs, Richard E Grant and
intimate footage of Thompson over a soundtrack by the likes
of Slash, FOR NO GOOD REASON is a riot of stories, animations and images compiled by director Charlie Paul over the
last 15 years.
