Origami is also a very inexpensive way to entertain yourself and others. The only items you will need for this task, are your imagination, as well as a good supply of paper. The purpose of this manual is to familiarize yourself with some general creatures to make. This will ensure that you have a good foundation with Origami, so that you may go on to create larger, and more complex designs. Layout of the Manual The sections of this manual will cover how to make a crane, a butterfly, and a goldfish. These general instructions are perfect practice for a beginner, and will significantly increase your Origami skills. Caution Paper used in the process can sometimes have sharp edges. Be wary of paper cuts as you create your creations. vi Origami Made Easy Chapter 1: Creating the Crane Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 1 2 Origami Made Easy Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 1. Start with a perfectly square piece of paper 2. Fold the paper horizontally then open the paper up flat 3. Repeat step 2 in the opposite direction then open the paper up flat Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 4. Flip the paper over and fold it diagonally 5. Open the paper and repeat step 4 in the opposite direction 6. Open the paper back up and flip it over with one of the corners pointing toward the top 3 4 Origami Made Easy 7. Bring in side corners while bringing the top flap down 8. Turn the paper so the open side faces left Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 5 6 Origami Made Easy 9. Fold the top flap down so the edge is lined up with the center line 10. Repeat step 9 for the bottom flap Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 11. Flip paper over and repeat steps 9 and 10 for the opposite side 12. Turn the paper so the long edges are at the bottom, fold the top flap down, and crease hard 7 8 Origami Made Easy 13. Bring this flap back up and fold it toward the other direction and crease hard. Bring the flap back up. 14. Lay the paper flat and open up one side. Turn the paper so that the open end is on the bottom. Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 15. Lift the bottom flap from the open end and fold it upward, bringing in the sides. Then fold the paper flat. 16. Flip the paper over and repeat steps 14 and 15 for the other side. 9 10 Origami Made Easy 17. Turn the paper so the “legs” point towards the left and fold down the top flap so the edge is lined up with the center line. 18. Repeat step 17 for the bottom flap 19. Flip the paper over and repeat steps 17 and 18 for the other side. Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 11 12 Origami Made Easy 20. Lay the paper flat with the “legs” pointing down and fold the left flap over. 21. Fold the bottom flap up Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 13 14 Origami Made Easy 22. Flip the paper over and repeat steps 20 and 21 for the other side 23. Lay the paper flat and fold the left flap over then fold the top flap down 24. Flip the paper over and repeat step 25 for the other side Chapter 1: Creating the Crane 15 16 Origami Made Easy 25. Form the head of the crane by folding one of the top tips down. 26. Pull the wings away from the body gently 27. Decorate the crane as desired and enjoy your origami crane! 17 Creating the Goldfish Chapter 2: Creating the Goldfish 19 Chapter 2: Creating the Goldfish 1. Start with a square piece of paper, with about 6’ on each side. Place it on the surface in front of you so that it looks like a diamond. 2. Fold and crease the top corner down to meet the bottom corner. You should now have a triangle. 3. Fold and crease the left and right corners of the triangle down to the bottom corner. You should have a diamond once more, this time with a line going from top to bottom. 20 Origami Made Easy 4. Fold and crease each bottom flap so that they are flush against the top of the diamond, as shown. 5. Fold and crease each flap so that they form a small triangle with one edge roughly horizontal. 6. Take the top portion of the bottom flap; fold and crease it so that the corner is along the vertical line. IMPORTANT: do not fold and crease all the way to where the flap meets the horizontal fold. Chapter 2: Creating the Goldfish 21 7. Take the portion of the flap that still remains below the horizontal fold; fold and crease it so that it meets the horizontal fold, as pictured. 8. Fold the remaining bottom flap to meet the backside of your creation. 9. Rotate your creation so that you are looking directly at the bottom (it should look like a mouth). Open the mouth and refold it so that the mouth is vertical instead of horizontal. Rotate your creation so that it appears like the right-most picture. 22 Origami Made Easy 10. Starting from the top corner, cut along the edge about 2/3 of the way to the right corner. Repeat along the respective bottom edge. Note that you will have to do this on both sides for the bottom edge. 11. Fold and crease the flap on each side so that it looks like a fish tail. If it looks like the picture below, congratulations! You’ve just made an origami goldfish! Decorate however you wish. Glossary Creating the Butterfly 23 24 Origami Made Easy Chapter 3: Creating the Butterfly 1. Start with a square piece of paper 2. Bring in sides, while folding down top (make sure bottom end faces you) 6. Take bottom corners, and fold up towards the center Glossary 7. Enjoy your new Butterfly! 29 30 Origami Made Easy Glossary FAQs What if I do not have Origami paper? o You may use any type of paper you want, as long as it is a perfect square How can I make a rectangular piece of paper a square? o Take a ruler and trace a square of your desired size, and cut it out with scissors. How do I get creases out of my paper? o If you make an unwanted crease, lay the paper flat, and place a heavy object on top of it for at least 30 minutes.
