Grading Scale, Research Question Worksheet
MMW 14, 15, 122
Assignments that are incomplete will not be accepted, and will be considered late until they have all required
components. In order to be considered complete, an assignment must include the following:
A completed, typed Research Question Worksheet
Photocopies/printouts of all sources are cited, correctly highlighted and labeled
A complete list of works cited
Criteria for Evaluation On-line Sources (if necessary)
A-range assignment:
Excellent in all or nearly all aspects of the assignment (see C-range category for minimum requirements)
A least one debatable research questions is proposed; may still need slight narrowing or modifications, but
shows promise
Topic is appropriate, but may still need refining/narrowing
Number and quality of observations demonstrate:
Substantial research efforts and independent thought
Wide reading on the topic
Careful attention to reading
Relevance to topic
Clear how all observations lead to conceptual problem, research question, and significance
All sources are scholarly
Observations include citations
Writing is clear and organization is coherent and logical
Paper is free of major errors
B-range assignment:
Meets, and at times exceeds, the basic requirements of the assignment (see C-range category)
Debatable research question is proposed; may be problematic, but shows promise
Topic is appropriate, but may need refining/narrowing
Number and quality of observations demonstrate:
Substantial research efforts
Wide reading on the topic
Attention to reading
Relevance to the topic
Relatively clear how observations lead to conceptual problem, research question, and significance
Sources are scholarly
Observations include citations
Writing is relatively clear; there may be some problems with clarity, lack of specificity, and/or organization.
Paper is free of major errors
C-range assignment (characterized by the following)
Minimally meets the basic requirements of the assignment.
A research question are proposed; may be problematic, perhaps not clear that it’s debatable (Level-3)
Topic is appropriate to the course time frame and not US-specific
Number and quality of observations demonstrate minimal:
Research efforts
Reading on the topic
Relevance to topic
Attention to reading
Minimal correlation of observations to the conceptual problem, research question and significance
Sources are scholarly
Student attempts to use citations correctly
Paper may contain some factual errors
Writing lacks clarity and/or is somewhat problematic awkward.
D-range assignment (characterized by one or more of the following):
Minimally meets some, but not all, of the basic requirements of the assignment (see C-range category above)
Worksheet is not complete
One research question is posed, and it is clearly not Level-3
Topic is appropriate, but very problematic
Number and quality of observations demonstrate minimal:
Research efforts
Reading on the topic
Relevance to topic
Attention to reading
Difficult to determine how observations lead to conceptual problem, research question and significance
Citations are significantly problematic
Minimal use of scholarly sources (either sources significantly too few, or too many unscholarly sources)
Paper contains many factual errors
Writing is poorly organized and/or incomprehensible in certain parts
F-range assignment (characterized by one or more of the following):
Any one of the following may result in a grade of F:
No assignment completed, or worksheet significantly incomplete
No research question is proposed
Topic is not appropriate (either outside timeframe or is US-specific)
Observations are inappropriate, completely irrelevant or absent
No scholarly sources are used
Writing is incomprehensible
There are no citations
