Protecting the Inner Bluegrass Region of Kentucky through land conservation for future generations. Bluegrass Summer 2012 News C o n s e r va n c y Easement donors Katie Bright, her mother Pat Bright, & Katie’s husband Dan Moran. Photo by Boo Hardy. “This land has been farmed by our family for all these years, so it holds a special place in our hearts.” – Katie Bright Protecting a lifetime of memories in Boyle County Katie Bright’s great-grandfather came from Garrard County to farm in Boyle County. He was a full-time farmer, as were both his son and grandson. Early on, the family’s land was used for many types of agriculture. By the time Katie’s father Robert Bright, Jr. took over, the farm was in cattle and tobacco. Before the tobacco buy-out, Bobby decided to stop growing tobacco and the farm has been focused on a commercial cow-calf operation ever since. Bobby knew every inch of his land. As his widow, Pat, tells it, “Sometimes while working, he would drive his truck to one of his favorite spots on the farm and soak in the beauty of this place that was so much a part of him. It would always boost his spirits.” The whole family knows how proud Bobby would be that the farm has been protected. “Perhaps my great-grandfather and grandfather would be even more pleased, as they would be stunned by how much of Boyle County’s rich, beautiful farmland has disappeared over the past two generations,” noted Katie. “Farmland not only makes Boyle County a beautiful place to live, it’s also part of our local economy. Even though the children in our family are not going to farm, someone will be able to continue to farm here in the future – and that was a real “plus” to conserving our land. We wanted to protect it as green space, but also to try and support local agriculture and the next generation of farmers.” Continued on next page > 2 Bluegrass Conservancy Protecting a lifetime of memories (continued from cover) Board Of Directors Helen Alexander, Chair Libby Jones, Vice-Chair Michael Burns, Secretary Doug Dean, Treasurer Lucy Breathitt Lendy Brown Laurel Catto Robert Clay Luke Fallon Margaret Graves Boo Hardy Hoppy Henton Betty Kenan John Mahan Connie Jo Miller Maegan Nicholson Liz Young, Ex-Officio Committee Chairs Auction Boo Hardy Easement Michael Burns Finance & Investment Doug Dean Fundraising & Development Betty Kenan Nominating & Board Governance Margaret Graves Young Friends Liz Young Staff Mackenzie Royce Executive Director Alison Freels Office Manager Ashley Noel Greathouse Easement Project Counsel Lindsey LeMaster Marketing & Public Outreach Director The decision to protect their land with Bluegrass Conservancy didn’t take long. The Bright Family Farm is owned by Pat and her four children, Steve, Katie, Sallie, and Jim. Katie investigated, sketched out the steps involved, and shared all the information with the rest of the family. The Brights talked, asked questions, and decided to go forward with the donation. “There are so many farmers who love their land. We encourage them to be open, hear what’s involved, and think about it,” notes Pat. “You still retain control. You still own the land. You still get to decide what happens on it. You can still farm. You can still sell it,” she adds, “This is simply thinking about farming and being a steward of your land in a new way.” The Bright family is well aware that as a farmer, sometimes you have good years, and other years are bad. Despite that reality, “we would feel terrible to see the next crop on our farm be houses – or a shopping center,” says Katie. The Bright family has lived on their land for generations. Photo by Andrés Orrego. “The Conservancy’s path seemed a good one, a permanent one. No one objected,” Katie said. She and Pat also believe that Bobby would not only be pleased that the land was conserved, but also that the whole family was of the same mind. That they all hold this place in their hearts and wanted to keep the farm here for the future. “The whole family is bonded to this land. We would all be broken-hearted if it were developed. There are so many memories on the farm for each of us – riding ponies and playing along the creek as children, watching the beam of burning brush in the old tobacco days, celebrating family weddings, and the magic of sunlight streaming in through the barn boards.” “Now not just our land, but our lifetimes of memories will always be protected.” Would you like to conserve your land? Conserving your land can be one of the most important things you do for your farm, your family, and your community. We gratefully acknowledge the 92 conservation leaders who have permanently protected their land for future generations with Bluegrass Conservancy. Landowners who conserve their property with Bluegrass Conservancy continue to own their land. Each landowner creates a conservation plan specific to their goals and the natural resources on the property. For many, the plan often allows for a limited amount of development on the land, which could include a housesite for the family’s children, home-based businesses, as well as agricultural and open-space-related businesses. If you would like information on land protection, contact Ashley Greathouse at [email protected] or 859-255-4552. Conservation plans are tailored to each family, and are flexible to allow farming to adapt. Photo by Andrés Orrego. Bluegrass Conservancy 3 Conservation Success Stories All conservation families have a story to tell, and they are all different. But one thing these families have in common is a wish for our special Kentucky traditions to live on. We wanted to share a few stories with you about some of our most recently protected farms that your support helped make possible. For additional information on the 92 families who have protected their land with Bluegrass Conservancy, or how you can conserve your land, visit www.bluegrassconservancy.org. Article photos by Ashley Greathouse unless otherwise noted. Hurricane Hills & Flying High Farms After discussing it with their children, Felicia and Doug Branham decided to take steps with Bluegrass Conservancy to conserve permanently not one, but all four of their Bourbon County farms in 2011. In total, the Branhams protected approximately 2,000 acres of farmland, much of it along the famed Kentucky scenic byway, Paris Pike. The Branhams’ farming activities are quite diverse, with two thoroughbred operations, a cattle operation, and a farm focused on general agriculture and crops. EIEIO Farm Clay Hancock, a passionate conservationist, recently protected her farm along Georgetown Road in Fayette County. Affectionately referred to as EIEIO Farm, the thirty acres of open space is a quiet respite from the industrial and high-density residential development between Lexington and Georgetown. The historic residence is much the same as it was 150 years ago with outbuildings such as an ice house, smoke house, and even a painter’s studio. The farm has established gardens surrounding the historic residence. Chickens and dairy cows roam the front pasture. Clay knew that this gem, threatened by development, had to be protected in perpetuity. Pleasant Grove Ann and Bob Wilson have a long history with Bluegrass Conservancy. Their faith in our land trust’s conservation program led the Wilsons to take the first leap in this region with their 1998 donation. Since then, they’ve placed conservation agreements on some of their land in 2007, and more of it in 2011, creating a critical mass of protected farmland in Jessamine County for their cattle operation. Bob, an avid botanist, germinates bur oak and blue ash seedlings and donates his saplings, originating from his protected farm, annually to Bluegrass Conservancy’s auction. 4 Bluegrass Conservancy Bow Wood Farm Leesa and Keith Moorman’s Bow Wood Farm is located in Clark County, along historic Boone Creek. Their beautiful farm combines productive agricultural land along with wooded palisades down to the creek. The farm is also home to a small Boer goat herd, originally introduced to safely eradicate invasive species like honeysuckle. Three family generations are now involved in the goat operations, including the Moormans’ children, Annabel and Atticus, who raised and showed Boer goat kids as 4H projects before college. The family plans to sell hormone-free, pasture-fed chevon (goat meat) in the near future. Pennland Kristina and John Penn protected their first farm with Bluegrass Conservancy in 2004, then additional farms in 2006, 2008, and most recently in 2011, as they have been purchasing additional land. The four contiguous farms in Bourbon County are known as Pennland, and comprise roughly 800 acres of conserved farmland. The Penns have a family history of farming and their children intend to continue that legacy. After college, two of the three siblings returned to help their father run the equine operation at Pennland. We hope that the Penns continue their pattern of adding acreage to their farm and preserving this special land. Gray’s Run Farm This is Bluegrass Conservancy’s first farm located in Harrison County! Russell Gray felt he needed to preserve his family’s farming legacy by protecting Gray’s Run Farm, which has been owned by various family members for the past 215 years. Gray’s Run Farm creates a critical mass of protected land because it is contiguous to Griffith Woods, a 745 acre property owned and managed by the Department of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, conserved by The Nature Conservancy, and containing one of Kentucky’s oldest old-growth savannas. Claiborne Farm One of the most respected and celebrated thoroughbred breeding farms in the world, Claiborne Farm has raised more than 75 Champions, been home to 16 Broodmares of the Year, and stood stallions that have topped the Leading Sire list 29 times, including such luminaries as Nasrullah, Princequillo, Danzig, Secretariat, and Mr. Prospector, among others. In 2011, the Hancock family created an enduring landmark by protecting the land in partnership with Bluegrass Conservancy. Comprised of 3,000 acres of prime bluegrass farmland in Paris, Kentucky, Claiborne has been owned and operated by the same family for over five generations. With guide Clare Sipple leading the way, participants hiked through beautiful Clark County farmland and along Jouett Creek. When asked why the hike was so special, participant Ben Albritton replied, “Places like Jouett Creek, where water cascades down rock ledges through a deep ravine, pressed and bursting on all sides with green flora, are my favorite places on earth. I am very glad this land is being preserved, and that opportunities are being made to come and connect with it, and connect with other people who value it too.” Hikers on their way to the trail.
