2009 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2008 TO JUNE 30, 2009 Every Child Deserves a Family 2009 Annual Report Vision Every child will have a permanent home and a loving family. Mission The Foundation will dramatically increase the number of adoptions of waiting children from North America’s foster care systems. Core Values The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption exists to be an agent of change in the lives of children in North America waiting to be adopted out of foster care. The Foundation views the urgency of this issue through the eyes of these children, and is dedicated to three critical core beliefs: Letter from Executive Director and President 3 Signature Programs 4 Awareness and Advocacy 6 National Grants 8 • Every child deserves to live in a safe, loving and permanent family. Special Events 10 Donor Recognition 11 • No child should linger in foster care or leave the system at age 18 without a family of their own. Auction Participants 13 Statement of Financial Position 14 Statement of Activities and Changes in Net Assets 15 • Every child is adoptable. Dear Friends Our founder, Dave Thomas, often said of our work, “If we get one child adopted, it will be worth it.” In 2009, we celebrated not one, but thousands of adoptions of children from foster care as a result of our signature programs and awareness efforts, as the Foundation: • Reached the milestone of 1,000 adoptions through our signature program, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, which finds families for the most vulnerable children in more than 120 cities across the United States and Canada with an investment of more than $7 million annually. • Celebrated the finalization of 4,500 adoptions of children from foster care as a leader and founding member of the National Adoption Day initiative. • Moved people to consider adoption and dispelled misperceptions about waiting children with a powerful new public service announcement, “I’m Just a Kid.” • Used posters, media relations efforts, electronic and social media campaigns and foster care adoption awareness toolkits to share information with millions of viewers, readers and listeners. • Provided a new educational resource for the adoption community, adoptive parents and waiting teens with the video, “Every Child Is Adoptable.” • Gave our free publication, A Child is Waiting: A Step-by-Step Guide to Adoption, to more than 90,000 potential adoptive parents. • Worked with Wendy’s restaurants, and a host of national partners, to engage Americans in the cause of foster care adoption, including Wendy’s coin canisters, Halloween Coupon Books, 3-Tour Challenge Golf Tournament and Father’s Day Frosty Weekend with actress Eva Longoria. • Partnered with CBS on the annual foster care adoption television special, “A Home for the Holidays,” which featured Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Mary J. Blige and Nia Vardalos and moved thousand to action. • Helped employers establish adoption benefits for 457,000 employees and recognized the nation’s best employers through the third annual 100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces List. On behalf of the children who now have forever families, and those we continue to serve, we thank you. It is with your support that we come closer each day to our vision of a family for every child. All good wishes, Rita L. Soronen Executive Director Denny Lynch President, Board of Trustees 3 Our Signature Programs Focus SIGNATURE PROGRAMS “These children are not someone else’s responsibility. They are our responsibility.” — Dave Thomas WENDY’S WONDERFUL KIDS Finding families – one child at a time Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, a signature program of the Foundation, is making a difference for thousands of children – one child at a time. This year, the Foundation awarded more than $7 million in grants to public and private adoption agencies to hire adoption professionals who execute aggressive, child-focused recruitment programs targeted exclusively on moving children from foster care into adoptive families. Since the program began in 2004, more than 4,800 children have been served. This year, 122 Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters worked for children in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and throughout Canada, and we celebrated the milestone of more than 1,000 children adopted as a result of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids. on Finding a Family for Every Child NATIONAL GRANTMAKING Supporting innovation on behalf of children “A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS” TELEVISION SPECIAL Moving viewers to adopt The Foundation awards grants to support programs that aggressively promote the adoption of foster care children in the United States. This year, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption distributed $405,000 in critical funds to five national organizations. This powerful special on CBS features foster care adoption stories, children who are waiting to be adopted, and musical performances by some of America’s most popular artists. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Wendy’s®, Children’s Action Network and Triage Productions were proud to present the 10th anniversary telecast this year. Since 1999, this heartwarming holiday special has generated tens of thousands of calls to the Foundation from viewers moved to action. ADOPTION-FRIENDLY WORKPLACE Removing barriers to adoption The Adoption-Friendly Workplace program makes it possible for parents to have the time and support they need to adopt. This signature program, launched in 1992 by Dave Thomas, encourages employers to offer adoption benefits such as financial reimbursement and paid leave to employees who adopt, and celebrates those employers who offer benefits. The Foundation provides free toolkits and expert technical assistance to establish an adoption benefits policy, and issues an annual list of the nation’s “100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces.” This year, the program resulted in employers making adoption benefits available to a total of 457,000 employees. “When I was adopted, I felt like I was given a second chance on life” — Daniel, age 16 5 FOSTER CARE ADOPTION AWARENESS Foster Care Adoption Awareness and Advocacy The Foundation provides more than 150,000 free booklets, posters, toolkits, public service announcements and videos to potential adoptive parents, adoption professionals, corporations and community groups each year; promotes foster care adoption through the media and in Wendy’s restaurants; and promotes policies and practices that make the adoption process more streamlined, accessible and affordable. Highlighting the urgent need for foster care adoption and providing free resources to inform and persuade A Child is Waiting: A Step-by-Step Guide to Adoption This year, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption distributed, free of charge, more than 90,000 copies to those considering adoption. The guide provides a user-friendly road map to navigate the process of adoption, and is available in Spanish and for prospective Canadian adoptive parents. Foster Care Adoption Videos and Public Service Announcements The Foundation distributed more than 16,000 free videos and public service announcements this year to inform and educate professionals, parents, the media and the public on foster care adoption. The Foundation currently offers five different educational videos and five powerful public service announcements. This year, the Foundation released “I’m Just a Kid!,” a new broadcast public service announcement highlighting the dreams of children in foster care and dispelling misperceptions about adoption. National Adoption Month November has been designated by the U.S. Congress as National Adoption Awareness Month. The Foundation leads a national grass roots effort to raise awareness about foster care adoption by providing tools, ideas and expertise to individuals and organizations to spread the word in their local communities. The Foundation produced and distributed 11,000 “Foster Care Adoption Awareness Toolkits” free of charge. The toolkit contains a CD-ROM with templates and resources, two new posters, and the Foundation’s Step-by-Step Guide to Adoption. National Adoption Day The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption works with a six-member Coalition to lead National Adoption Day, a day of celebration of adoptive families and an opportunity for courts to open their doors and finalize the adoptions of children from foster care. Since 2000, more than 25,000 children have had their adoptions finalized on National Adoption Day. This year, 4,500 children were adopted as more than 350 events were held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, bringing families, adoption advocates, policy makers, judges and volunteers together to celebrate adoption and draw Americans’ attention to the 129,000 children still waiting for families. 7 Grantmaking: Funding Aggressive Efforts to Find NATIONAL GRANTEES This year, the Foundation awarded $405,000 in critical funds to five national organizations working to move children from foster care into loving, permanent families.
