DISCUSSION ON LAUNDERING
The law requires all fabrics to be tested both initially and after 50 launderings. Products whose flame
retardant characteristics depend on topical finishes should undergo the 50 wash procedure on every
production lot.
Garment manufacturers are relieved of the 50 wash responsibility provided that they have a 50 wash test
certificate applying to the fabric used to construct the garment.
There are certain instances where due to the garment finish and construction, the garment is unable to
comply with the test requirements. Occasionally, one wash and dry will sometimes improve the garment’s
performance. The law permits this one laundering cycle.

SAMPLE SUBMITTAL CHECK LIST

☐ Face: Write the word ‘FACE” on the surface of the material to be exposed to the test
conditions. (Writing on the material is preferable to labeling; labels can fall off.)
b)
☐ Length Direction: Draw an arrow on the face surface in the length/warp/machine direction of
the material.
c)
☐ Maximum Exposure/Cycles: If a sample is being subjected to a potentially destructive
exposure, such as light, abrasion, etc., please specify the maximum number of cycles (i.e. 60
hours; 100,000 double rubs; etc.). Requests to test “until break” are not satisfactory; the
maximum number of cycles must be specified by the submitter.
d)
☐ Color: Color must be given when color sensitive tests are requested. If the color is given by
number code, please also furnish a word description of the color (i.e. Color 157 Chocolate;
Color 281 Sage).
e)
☐ Adhesive: In the absence of instructions from the client, adhesive products will be applied to
standard substrate material.
