A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
When I worked in Rome, I supervised American seminarians
working in apostolates or opportunities for pastoral service. One
of my favorite places to visit where our seminarians helped was
at the Little Sisters of the Poor. They provided a nursing home
for elderly people. Their care and concern for the elderly
touched the hearts of our seminarians and visitors. I will not
forget the kindness and compassion which they offered to the
most frail and needy older persons in their home.
Today, the Little Sisters of the Poor, an international Catholic Congregation of Religious Sisters, have continued their mission to serve others, especially for the elderly.
The Little Sisters of the Poor arrived in America in 1868. Currently, there are thirty
homes in the United States where the elderly and dying are treated and cared for with
love and dignity. The Little Sisters serve more than 13,000 elderly poor people in thirtyone countries around the world.
The Little Sisters of the Poor have been in the news in the United States for the last
few years due to the HHS Mandate. The federal government has passed a regulation
that attempts to force the Little Sisters of the Poor and other religious groups to participate in a system of providing insurance coverage for drugs and services in ways that
violate their religious vows and the teachings of the Catholic Church. The HHS Mandate would force the sisters to help provide their employees with free access to abortion-inducing drugs, sterilizations, and contraceptives.
The government is threatening them with large fines if they refuse to participate. The
Little Sisters believe that this rule is wrong, and that it violates the religious liberty protections provided by federal law and the First Amendment. So, like many other Catholic and religious institutions around the country, they have filed a lawsuit asking federal
courts to allow them to continue their ministry without having to violate their religious
beliefs. Recently the federal government announced an accommodation for religious
non-profits.
The government had refused to exempt the Little Sisters, even though it exempts
churches and other religious organizations. The accommodation still forces the Little
Sisters to find an insurer who will cover sterilization, contraceptive and abortioninducing drugs and devices, and will provide related counseling and education to promote those things. The accommodation still violates their religious beliefs.
Since the government refuses to classify them as a “religious employer,” the Little Sisters are required to hire a third party to provide these objectionable services to their
employees, and thus are still forced to participate in the government’s mandate. Believing that every human person has God-given worth, the Little Sisters cannot provide
contraceptive, abortion, and sterilization services that go against their religious beliefs.
As we pray for our country during the anniversary of the January 22, 1973 US Supreme
Court ruling, we look forward to a resolution in the federal courts of the rights for religious groups, such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, who simply want to continue the
mission of Jesus assisting those most in need.

PERPETUAL ADORATION—THE
LORD JESUS INVITES US: COME
TO ME As Lent begins, we will begin
Perpetual Adoration with exposition in
our Blessed Sacrament Chapel located
between the church and Our Lady Chapel. Exposition means the large Communion host is exposed or is in plain view for
our prayer with our Lord Jesus. Perpetual Adoration is continuous prayer with
Him in the Blessed Sacrament every hour,
24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. When
there is exposition, someone must always
be with the Lord. The host in the monstrance cannot be left alone. Parishioners
will sign up to spend an hour, or even
more with our Lord, until every hour has
been filled.
We are encouraging adoration at SVdP
for parish members to deepen their personal relationship with the Lord. It is our
chance for an hour to be with Him face
to face. Jesus invited His apostles and
disciples: Come to me. (Matt. 11:28) Jesus
desires for us to be with Him in prayer.
This is a wonderful opportunity to answer His request.
During the hour of adoration we spend
time in prayer and thanksgiving, share our
day with the Lord, read scripture and
simply be with our Lord Jesus in silence.
An hour of adoration can be done alone
or with friends, and is a great opportunity
to pray with spouses or family members.
