Jan. 15: Ready or not, here comes another
one.
After a successful run with Kevin and Tyler
Gulsby, the Steinert swim program has
replenished with yet another one. But this one
wears a one piece suit, not trunks, as Emily
Gulsby is a freshman on the Spartans girls’
team this year.
And she made her presence felt quite nicely in
today’s 121-49 victory at Hamilton West, as she
swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team
while also taking second in the 100 back and
200 IM.
“I thought I did really well,” Gulsby said. “I need
to work on some things but other than that I did
all right.”
Coach Caroline “Lady” Fling used one of her
favorite terms to describe Gulsby.
“She’s an animal,” Fling said. “She comes from
good stock. She enjoys a challenge and it’s fun Emily Gulsby, who's keeping the family business going at Steinert,

Eggert).
para professional coaches on our staff. They
take time out of their busy work schedules to come with us. They’ve been a great part of the Steinert
team.”
And Fling is certain that Emily will continue the tradition.
“I knew she wasn’t a club swimmer but I knew she was a Gulsby so I figured it would run in the family
and I knew she was going to be great,” the Lady said. “I couldn’t wait to see what she could do. She’s
just been wonderful. I could put her anywhere I wanted to.”
Emily grew up watching her brothers and, just like them, skipped club but still wanted to swim at
Steinert.
“I’ve always done swimming lessons when I was younger,” she said. “Since my brothers did it at
school I thought I would try it. I’m enjoying it a lot. I’m pretty pleased with how I’m doing.”
Steinert had a lot to be pleased with result-wise, although Fling was hoping to use this as a power
point meet but the times didn’t allow it.
“We tried, but that didn’t work out,” she said. “But I’m not very disappointed because we have more
meets. We’re trying to have a meet where we could put together some very good times.”
The nice thing about this meet for Steinert (5-5) is that some different swimmers got the chance to
succeed.
Jess Angelini won the 200 IM, while Saige Boundonna and Katie Wiegartner were on the winning 200
medley relay team. Boundonna took second in the 100 free and third in the 100 back, while
Wiegartner was second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 IM. Alison Martin chipped in with two
thirds.
Of course, the Spartans studettes were rocking it as usual. Hailey “The Player” Thayer was a four-time
winner, while Maddie Horner, Tess Dalton, Sam Woolf and Chelsea Ackerson each picked up three
firsts.
For Hamilton, Shelby South continues to enjoy a strong freshman season. Steinert won all 11events
but South took second in the 400 free and 200 free.
Sam Courtney added a second and third for the Hornets, as she managed to overcome the massive
devastation of not being recognized by an old friend who was ODing on chlorine at the pool.
South enjoyed going against some of the talented swimmers on the Spartans and is filing everything
away for future use.
“It definitely pushes me to stay with the older kids and want to look up with them and swim as fast as
they can,” she said. “It’s my first year, I’m kind of just feeling everything out and going for what I can.
“I’m just looking at some of these swimmers that I’ll be swimming against next year and knowing what
I’m going to have to do in practice to improve, so I can keep up with them and give them more of a
challenge.”
