The scriptures this weekend speak of God’s calling. In the first book of Samuel, we hear God calling Samuel to be his servant. In the Gospel of John, we hear Jesus calling Peter and Andrew. These men sought to serve God with their whole lives. We too, are called to serve God with our whole lives! What does this look like though? This means fulfilling your God given vocation should be your top priority. For those who are married, your vocation is to love your spouse and children. For those who are single, your vocation is to give yourself in love to those God has placed in your life. In loving them, you love God. As we begin ordinary time this year, let us renew our commitment to serving and loving those who God has trusted to us. If you or someone you know feels a call to the priesthood or religious life, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to help you discern and get you in touch with others who will help you discern God’s calling. January 22—Day of Prayer for the Unborn This Thursday is the anniversary of the Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion. The horrendous crime of abortion has been permitted in our country for 42 years. We need to continue to stand up for the most defenseless, the unborn. Please join myself and others as we pray and march at the State Capitol. We will be carpooling at 9:15 am from St. Peter’s parking lot to the Cathedral of St. Paul. We will participate in the 10:00 am Pro-Life Prayer Service and then march to the State Capitol. I encourage everyone, young–old–families, to attend. If you cannot make it, please still pray for the end of the abortion and make a penance by fasting for deserts or meat. Catholic School’s week! The week of January 25th-31st is Catholic School’s week! Our wonderful school will have an open house on Sunday January 25th, from 10:00-1:00 pm. I encourage you to attend! Please consider Catholic Education for your children as it is extremely beneficial on so many levels. We have a great school and the faith of the students and teachers inspire me to be a holy priest. Just last week they put together a book with notes and prayers for Archbishop Nienstedt from the staff and students. I delivered it to him on Sunday and he was very grateful for the support! That is just one example of many which shows their love for the faith. I know personally, I greatly benefited from my many years of Catholic Education. Also, Friday January 30th, is the School Carnival. The theme is “A Trip to the Tropics!” So break out your flip flops, shorts and beach shirts! It is from 5:00-8:00 pm in the Multi-purpose room and St. Peter’s Hall. All parishioners are welcome! I hope to see you there! God bless you! It’s that time of year to begin looking at our parish activities for the New Year. Our staff is busy looking at calendars and planning their activities. I too am looking at my calendar and beginning to think about the Parish Festival. Late last year I announced that we are in need of a core group of people to come together to assist me and a couple of other staff people with the planning of the Parish Festival. Unfortunately, no one has called me yet! We need the young, the old, the seasoned veterans and inexperienced beginners. We need you! All are welcome! Our goal is to review what works, what didn’t work and entertain new ideas, while embracing the traditions of previous festivals. This core group will also “host” this year’s festival weekend and will be actively engaged in each area of the festival. Tim Jacobson, our staff accountant, and I will lead the team and the administrative work for the festival will be handled by our parish staff. We are hoping to put together our first meeting for the early part of February. Therefore, I ask you to look into your hearts, say yes to the call to assist us with this year’s festival. Remember many hands, will make light work for everyone. Please call me at the office to graciously accept my invitation to join us for an awesome time! THANK YOU Thank you to everyone that sent the staff Christmas gifts this year. Each year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our parishioners that supply us each year with goodies that are given from the heart. The out pouring of support, care and kindness that we receive each day from those we are here to serve. We ask God to send His blessings upon you in this New Year. CEMETERY NEWS As you may know, Deacon Gary Houle has retired from his position as the Cemetery Curator. Deacon Gary has been serving the parish in this capacity for the past 27 years. We are extremely grateful for all he has done to ensure the beautification of Calvary Cemetery and the work he has done in assisting those with needs for burial sites. Please join me in thanking him for his many years of service in this ministry. In looking for a replacement for Deacon Gary, we have made the decision to take his position and assign the duties to our staff. I have assumed the role of selling graves, arranging burials, as well as working with monument companies, funeral homes, and families for all of their needs. Steve Jutz has taken on the role of marking the graves and actually opening and closing the graves for cremations. Questions regarding the cemetery should now be directed to me at the parish office. END OF YEAR STATEMENTS We are working hard to close the books for the calendar year 2014. This includes preparing contribution and tuition statements for each family in the parish and school. Our goal is to have them ready for the mail on or before January 23, 2015. If you need the information sooner, we can assist you via phone, but will be unable to send a statement until we have the year closed out. The Board of Directors of the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation thanks all who contributed in 2014 to this organization that is raising funds to support CSA funded ministries. The 2014 campaign did just as well as the 2013 campaign On January 6 the Minnesota legislative session opened. Among the Minnesota Catholic Conference’s 2015 legislative principles is to “Protect each and every human life from conception until natural death. The Appeal funds services that no one parish or individual can do alone and these services must go on despite these troubled times in our archdiocese. It is important to know that contributions to the CSA are being used for the benefit of designated ministries of the Appeal. Please visit the new Catholic Services Appeal Foundation website at www.csafspm.org for more information. Minnesota must effectively affirm, protect and defend each and every human life, including the unborn. We must limit the availability of abortion , particularly during the later stages of pregnancy; end taxpayer funding of abortion; and oppose attempts to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide. (CCC.2270-79; Evangelium Vitae2; Living the Gospel of Life, USCCB) Many of our parishioners will soon receive or have already received a mailing from the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation requesting their support of the 2015 CSA. Please respond generously. When you give to the CSA, you provide food and shelter, education, spiritual support and sacraments to individuals who are in need, disabled, imprisoned, hospitalized or in nursing homes. You support low-income seniors, pregnant mothers, refuges and immigrants. You support seminarians preparing for the priesthood, make the annual Archdiocesan Youth Day happen and help to fund the evangelization and catechesis initiatives. You help our 65,000 brothers and sisters at the mission parish of Jesucristo Resucitado in Venezuela. Please contact state elected officials with these concerns. House information: 651-296-2146, Senate information: 651-296-0504. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: “Be Imitators of Christ”. Your gift to the CSA helps to meet that challenge by enabling the funded ministries to reach out and demonstrate Christ’s love to many, many people in need. Funds given to the CSA help to share the message of salvation not only in our parish but throughout our local Church and beyond. Commit to helping the CSA supported ministries. Then, please contemplate God’s gifts to you and reflect on your gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish and vital ministries throughout this local Church is one way to express this gratitude. Please note that when our parish reaches it’s goal, 25% of all funds received will be returned for use in our parish. Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration PARISH AND COMMUNITY Flu Season All Things Catholic Gift Shop Reported cases of flu and colds are very high this year. During the flu season it’s a good idea to offer a sign of peace other than the shaking of hands. This could be a slight bow of the head or just some words of peace. The gift shop will be reducing the price on some of our Christmas merchandise including Christmas cards until the weekend of January 24th. Do not be offended if the people near you do not offer to shake your hand. Let’s all try to keep the flu at bay. Thank you. With clean up the group is ready to leave Faith Lutheran by 7:00 pm. For more information or to help, contact Sue Fast at 651-982-2238. During the second week, our pilgrims can choose to work on several humanitarian projects for Mother’s Village (www.mothersvillage.org), a Franciscan humanitarian organization located on the outskirts of Medjugorje. The 2015 International Youth Festival will be held in Medjugorje from August 1 through August 6, and our pilgrims will be able to attend and participate in many of the International Youth Festival activities that week.
