RxConnect™ platform, this combined solution can help to start client therapies faster by reducing time-to-first-dose and
giving nurses quick yet secure access to medications for their clients ... improving safety and quality of care.
Medication administration is one of the most common potential points of error in the care process. Pyxis MedStation ES plays
a key role in ensuring adherence to a comprehensive closed-loop medication management protocol.
The Pyxis ES System
The solution is designed to provide centralized system management tools for today’s
inpatient and residential facilities. The solution leads to more meaningful integration
between individual units, facilities and the greater healthcare community by sharing
data at the right time, with the right person. Data can be displayed from a detailed
or broader perspective, and provides support to users ranging from nursing staff to
pharmaceutical staff to technology staff.
Pyxis ES has built in efficiencies. Users enter information one time, in one system
and the information flows to subsequent, appropriate systems. For example, a single
formulary can be imported from the Pharmacy Information System (PIS) and applied, as
appropriate, across the entire health system. There is no need to manage formularies at
each site and on each device, supporting standardization throughout the organization.
Safety and efficiency are likewise built into new client-centric workflows. Whereas older solutions were built on common tasks
specific to each user, these new workflows focus on the client and the tasks that support him or her. This makes providing
treatment easier and quicker.
• Flexible System Management – The flexibility of the Pyxis MedStation ES solution provides greater control over user privileges and security groups. You will have flexibility in designing and implementing user roles to meet your needs and help you enhance system security.
Accessibility to the system server via any web browser will provide users with access to the system from almost anywhere, at any time. If your site does not have full-time, on-site pharmacy resources, you can still have the support you need as your pharmacist can log in remotely to manage critical tasks.
Further, there is no limit on licenses for users, nor is there any software to install on computers that access the Pyxis Enterprise Server. Anyone with permissions can access and print reports as necessary; thus
improving nursing efficiency since reports can be accessed from the nurse manager’s work area. Pyxis ES has up to 90-days of data resident in the system and integrates with Pyxis Knowledge Portal for extensive
usage and controlled substance analytics. The Pyxis ES data can also be exported into various formats including Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and PDF.
• Medication Safety Enhancements – Safety enhancements make it easy for users to identify/avoid potential errors. For example, clients with the same last name are highlighted visually for the nurse within the user interface so that he or she will be more careful to select the correct client.
Override management features include a search function to find the appropriate med and a pop-up warning if a nurse tries to use override to remove a med already on the client profile.
A cleanable keyboard helps prevent infections without sacrificing functionality; there is a full keyboard under the cleanable surface.

• Simple, Efficient Workflows – The Pyxis MedStation ES workflows are centered on the client. In five
seconds and four clicks, the nurse has the medication for the client at the time due. The workflows also allow the nurse to access client and medication information without leaving the workflow. Simple, clickable icons reveal additional client information—all within one screen.
Pharmacy workflows are also streamlined. The load and refill processes at the MedStation are integrated in the Pyxis ES solution and can be filtered in numerous ways to help pharmacy users complete their activities quickly and efficiently.
Making It Happen
CareFusion can deploy a full turnkey solution with all hardware and software required. But if your site allows, the Pyxis ES can
also be deployed as software or a VMware image, virtualized on your hardware. The server can be patched and secured by
your IT department to allow for asset tracking and support or Pyxis can manage it for you. The system supports integration
