Thank you for your generosity Last Week’s 2nd Collection Interfaith Health & Support Services Collected: $5,248.00 A Letter From The Pastoral Staff... This week-end we are celebrating the anniversary of the death of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. It is also the beginning of the week of prayer for Christian Unity. These two remembrances fit well together and can also be connected to our readings this Sunday. The Lord’s call to Samuel and Jesus’ call to Andrew and Peter remind us of our own Baptismal invitation to follow Christ. “Here I am Lord” is more than the refrain of a familiar hymn. It is a response that indicates our availability to go where we are needed when we hear the Lord’s call. We have a wonderful example in Dr. King who was willing to stand up to the powers that be in a non-violent response to the oppression of people of color. We join with all Christian people in honoring him as a faithful disciple who was truly martyred for his beliefs. Our faith does not always call us to follow an easy path – we have many holy women and men who have given their lives in service to people in need and whose lives have been taken because they stood up for what was just for their people. We may never be called upon to put our lives on the line as they did, but we are certainly called to work together for justice for all. I believe that if we can look at all people as our sisters and brothers, we will not be able to act in ways that deny others their human dignity. We can unite with all people of faith in working for just solutions to the issues of the day – war, immigration, discrimination, hunger, poverty, or economic inequality. The vocational call that is often based on these readings is really a call to all, not just to the few who may discern a life of Church ministry. “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening” is a prayer we need to pray when we are looking for ways to be effective Christians in today’s world. Do you experience a desire to pray always? Are you searching for a better understanding of the actions of God’s grace in your life? Spiritual Direction is not about problem solving. It is neither counseling nor therapy. It is about enhancing one’s prayer life. Directors help people recognize and respond to God’s will in their life experiences. One Director summed up the process this way, “All I do is listen. People already have a spiritual life; they are not starting here. Often they need relief from the pressure that they are not doing the right thing. I help them see the goodness in where they are on their journey, not where they think they’re supposed to be.” God is the real spiritual director. The Diocese of Trenton has several training programs called an internship. These are two or three year programs focusing on deepening one’s own spiritual life and on learning the dynamics of Spiritual Direction. Upon completion of the program a person receives a Certificate from the Diocese. Our parish has three certified Spiritual Directors and three interns. During the internship period individuals give spiritual direction and submit reports of the sessions for supervision. There is no charge for Spiritual Direction. If you think this might be a way for you to recognize God’s actions in your life please call: Maryann Barrek, ofs, (609) 492-7502, Barbara Horwath, ofs, (609) 384-6188, Pat Simmons, ofs, (609) 661-1361. We invite those who are Catholic, those who want to have your questions answered, those who want to learn more about the Catholic Faith, those who are preparing to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, and those who are seeking to continue to find God in the everyday goodness of life to join with us as we continue to journey in faith with God and one another. The RCIA is a process that enables us to reflect on our identity and our mission as people of God. Classes meet on Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in Room 212 unless otherwise noted. Next scheduled meeting: February 11, Room 212 An Invitation to Contemplative Living This program calls out to those who desire to live more contemplatively in the world, to grow in union with God and others, and to become more aware, intentional and free. God liberates us and heals us through the practice of contemplative prayer. Monthly sessions on the practice of contemplative prayer are scheduled. This group meets from 9:45 AM to 12:00 PM in the Center. Next scheduled meeting: February 14, Sr. Lounge Presenter: Fr. John, ofm. The JPIC Corner: Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation “The Church forcefully maintains [the] link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that a society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.” Pope Benedict XVI Caritas in Veritate (15). As Pope Benedict stated, we have to have a consistent ethic of life issues. As we approach the January 22nd March for Life in DC, let us pray that we as Catholic people can be united on all the issues that affect the lives of those who are weak or marginalized. Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office (609) 406-7449 - [email protected] Is God Calling You? Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s discernment meeting on January 25th, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Saint Joseph Parish, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River, New Jersey. Join Rev. Scott Schaffer, as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and concluding with a great meal and conversation. Please register with the Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office at [email protected] or by calling (609) 406-7449. Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His invitation!
