FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)
Q1: HOW CAN I GET A TOUR OF CAMPUS?
A: Campus tours will be offered on January 5, 2015 during the NAIT New Student
Orientation. Additionally, campus tours are offered by select program areas on the first
day of classes.
Q2: WHO DO I CONTACT ON CAMPUS IN AN EMERGENCY?
A: For non-life threatening emergencies, NAIT Protective Services is available 24
hours a day at 780.471.7477. When using a campus phone, you can simply dial 7477.
For real time updates, follow NAIT Protective Services on Twitter @NAIT_PS. If your
emergency is life threatening call 911.
Q3: WHEN AND WHERE DO I GET MY BOOK LIST AND TEXTBOOKS?
A: Program areas provide students with their book list. The majority of programs
provide the NAIT Bookstore with a copy, which can also be found online under
“textbook info.” The Bookstore recommends going to class before buying books
unless you have received a book list from the program. Books should not be purchased
any earlier than three weeks before classes start. If books get changed or need to
be returned, there is a three-week refund policy. If you want to avoid lineups at the
bookstore, you can order books online. Visit onlinestore.nait.ca for more details.
Q4: WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR STUDENT HEALTH AND DENTAL CARE ON
CAMPUS?
A: Any students taking a CREDIT course (whether part-time or full-time) are assessed
the Health and Dental fee of $114.00 per term.
Students with existing coverage can opt out. To do this, students can either go to the
NAITSA Service Centre (E131) with proof of coverage and fill out a waiver form, or visit
mystudentplan.ca/nait to opt out online.
The deadline to opt out for Winter intake students is January 30, 2015.
Students cannot opt out or in to the plan per semester; rather, students have one
chance per benefit year before the opt out deadline to change their coverage status.
Students who elect to keep their student coverage, or do not opt out, are
automatically activated around six-eight weeks from their start date. To learn more
about the student benefit plan, please drop by the NAITSA Office in E131, visit
mystudentplan.ca/nait or call 780.471.7730.
Q5: WHERE DO I GET ACADEMIC OR PERSONAL HELP ON CAMPUS?
A: The NAIT Academic Success Centre (W111PB) offers academic and personal counselling
(nait.ca/counselling) and services for students with disabilities (nait.ca/ssd). Visit their
websites or call 780.387.6133 for more details. The Tutorial Learning Centre (A133)
offers drop-in tutoring in math and physics; peer writing assistance is also available
in the Centre on a drop-in and appointment basis. Visit nait.ca/tutorial for more
information. Free writing tutoring is also available online through eTutor Alberta. Visit
etutoralberta.ca to make a profile and receive feedback on your submitted papers or
assignments within 24-48 hours. For help in other areas, students can hire a peer tutor
through the “Peer Tutor Registry” in the student portal. Academic Support Services
also offers free study skills workshops. Watch for posters around campus or visit the
Tutorial website for details.
Q6: HOW DO I GET A NAIT LOCKER?
A: Throughout the academic year, locker rental will be subject to availability and is issued
on a first-come, first-served basis. Students in full-time, apprenticeship and part-time
programs are able to rent a locker through the MyNAIT portal. Rates are $33.60 for a full
locker and $16.80 for a half locker per semester. Visit nait.ca/lockerrental for additional
details and rental procedures. This information will be especially important for students on
Patricia and Souch Campuses.

FAQs
Q7: WHAT IS THE U-PASS?
A: U-Pass (or Universal Transit Pass) is a mandatory transit program for postsecondary students, granting unlimited regular access to Edmonton Transit (ETS),
Strathcona County Transit (SCT), and St. Albert Transit (STAT). All students taking one
or more credit courses at NAIT are automatically charged a $155.00 U-Pass fee each
semester and are issued a U-Pass sticker for their student ID card. There is no option
for opting out of the program except for students outside of the service area for the
practicum. During peak intake times (Dec 8-12, 2014 and Jan 5-16, 2015), students
may pick up their U-Pass sticker weekdays at the South Lobby kiosk (O Building).
Mon-Thurs. 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM and Fri. 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM. For more information on
the U-Pass program, please visit naitsa.ca/services/upass/ or email [email protected].
Q8: HOW DO I ARRANGE PARKING ON CAMPUS?
A: Parking is limited at NAIT. It is recommended that students purchase parking
permits early. Public transit is a great alternative to parking and is easily accessible to
and from NAIT, especially using your U-Pass. Stay tuned for the new NAIT LRT line coming
soon! For more information about parking, please visit mynait.nait.ca/parking.htm
Q9: I HAVE AN INQUIRY, WHO CAN I CONTACT?

Education, or the MyNAIT Portal & E-Learning, please contact the Student Success

online housing registry with hundreds of rental options at rentingspaces.ca. MacEwan
will open up their residence to NAIT students if there is room. Call 780.633.8000 for
details or apply at residence.macewan.ca.
Q11: WHERE DO I FIND OUT ABOUT EMPLOYMENT AND VOLUNTEER
OPPORTUNITIES AT NAIT?
A: Visit nait.ca/studentemployment for career search information and tips as well as
upcoming employment events. NAITSA also posts job and volunteer opportunities at
naitsa.ca and the Nugget newspaper advertises job and volunteer opportunities regularly.
Q12: DO I NEED TO HAVE TOP GRADES TO GET A STUDENT AWARD?
A: No, not necessarily. There are four different kinds of awards at NAIT: scholarships,
prizes, awards and bursaries. These awards provide an opportunity for all students.
Awards are given on the basis of academic performance or merit, community
involvement, athletic ability, satisfactory academic standing, financial need and any
other conditions stated in the terms of eligibility. To apply, visit the Scholarships and
Bursaries Office (O101) and pick up a Scholarships and Bursaries Handbook or visit
nait.ca/scholarships.
Q13: HOW DO I GET INVOLVED IN ATHLETICS OR INTRAMURALS?
A: If you are interested in playing for one of NAIT’s athletic teams, visit the Ooks
website at nait.ca/athletics and fill out a recruitment form. To get involved in
intramurals at NAIT, visit nait.ca/recreation for details and to register. Different sports
have different start dates and registration deadlines, but most start in early to midSeptember.
