The Meeting
Riehl and Kathy Streeter, led us
in singing God Bless America.
President Milly thanked the
Rotarians who helped with the
meeting, including Bruce Shore,
Spur reporter; Belth Wilson,
Spur photographer; Irv Stowers,
audio; Pat McMinamen Video,
Phil Dean, setup, Front Table
John Sarboraria, Ed Coats, Randy
Schleintz, Lance Cavalieri and
Debbie Peck. Ken Perrine and
a helper carried the traveling
microphones. Bruce Shore was
Greeter and single-handedly
gnawed a double order of dem
bones.
Introduced as guests of Rotarians
were:Charlotte Severin (with
husband Jerry) who told of a
two-piano concert on Sat 24
Jan at 8pm at the Pleasanton
Firehouse;
Sonia Sheffield (again, with John
Shirley); Jeff March (again, with
Mike Riehl), and Mary Anne
Frates (with one of the Minigrant
Hank Shay gave the Thought,
awardees)
based on the Dr. Suess novel
“Horton Hatches an Egg”, in
which the hero retorts, to all
temptations to abandon his
trust, “I meant what I said and I
said what I meant, an elephant’s
faithful one hundred percent.”
There were no visiting Rotarians
today.

The Meeting
Dr Jack Mills, DDS, gave a
“Tenured
Member
Talk”,
recounting first his early life
in Wichita FallsTexas, where
he graduated from high
school in 1954, then attending
Midwestern State University,
before
attending
Baylor
University Dental School in
Dallas, where he met and
married his wife in 1959;
they have two kids and two
grandkids. He volunteered
for military service after
which
he
served
his
residency at UCSF. In 1967,
having chosen northern
over southern California, he
opened his Livermore dental
office and joined our Rotary
Club. At that time John
Shirley was President, and it
was he who pointed out to a
meeting latecomer Dr Mills,
that “we always make it on
time to Rotary”. Jack enjoys
Bob Cowan was called upon by
skiing and sailing.
Milly to comment on the recent
victory of the football team
of his alma mater Ohio State
over second-best University of
Oregon. Bob has a BS, MS and
PhD from Ohio State. The last

Clever Ohio State students have everyone believing
that these leaves are from a "Buckeye" plant.
Buckeye Nuts
of these degrees was awarded in 1968, a time
when Ohio State also won a championship
football game, that time against USC for which
OJ Simpson was the star. Bob promised $100 to
the READY program.
Apparently, Ohio State students will
wear just about anything.

on the Bella Rosa Ball, Feb 14,
to be held in the fine ballroom
at Garre Winery, to benefit
Axis Health and various
youth programs. For $125
per person you will be treated
to fine cuisine and dancing
to melodies of an 18-piece
orchestra. Hank Shay has
posters to distribute.
Jen Thaete proudly told of
her daughter’s Cum Laude
graduation from USF in three
years, an event that prompted
Jen to join the Presiden’ts
Club.
The Meeting
Kathy and Cark Streeter were
recently shown in an article in
The Independent, as part of the
founders of a new drama group
“Encore Players”. They will
be presenting their first play
on Friday, Saturday, Sunday
evenings Feb 13-15. Clark has
one of the starring roles. The
Streeters donated $100 to the
READY program.

Mony concluded
his presentation
with
a
description of life
in
Cambodian
schools,
and
with his favorite
quotation: “Better
make a difference
than make a dollar”.
Phil Dean drew our attention
to some Rotary history,
associated with the Four-Way
Test and the Code of Conduct.
He reminded us of the official
statements of the Object of
Rotary, as written on handout
cards at the front table every
week, and suggested that our
club should institute a new
program, on Integrity and
Ethics. This would include
regular “Ethics Moment” at
our meetings, a scholarship
grant to a high school
student, and an ethics award
to a local businessman. The
program would be overseen
by an Ethics Committee. Phil
will present his ideas to the
Board.
