FROM THE PRESIDENT
Here’s to wishing the entire Desert Princess Community a Healthy and Happy New Year. May all
your wishes and dreams become a reality in 2015.
Community Updates:
Status of the Search for a General Manager The
Search Committee (Michelle Simson, Don Milligan
and I) will reconvene during the first week of
January to evaluate the list of candidates. We
currently have nine interested candidates with
strong leadership experience in country clubs and
homeowners associations.
We will also be discussing expanding our search
to look for candidates that have extensive leadership background in the corporate and military
environments. In addition, we will also search for
candidates from universities, alumni organizations, and for experts in the field of organizational
management, development and behavior.
Allocation of Homeowner Association Fees
$411 Per Month (Maintenance), $57 Per Month (Contribution to Reserves), $112 Per Month (Proprietary
Dues to Country Club), Total $580 Per Month
The Distribution is shown in the chart below.
We have many challenges ahead--the hiring of a
General Manager; improving organization health;
improving the Food & Beverage operation; maintaining our home values, reserve fund and fiscal sustainability.
MARILYN J. WHITE
President, Desert Princess Board of Directors
[email protected]
When there is a void in leadership, the threads of
our fabric that were once strong weaken through
time. We are facing a lack of focus on organizational health, core values, vision and cohesive
leadership. The need to fill the General Manager
position is paramount to the continued success of
our community.
Resignation of Interim Country Club Manager
Last month I reported on the hiring of David
Morris as our temporary Interim Country Club
Manager. We were very excited to have a person
of his experience in club management to give us
leadership and direction in the Food & Beverage
operation. However, after 22 days, Mr. Morris
resigned from his position. We are very disappointed but clearly understand his reasons. He
felt he could not make headway addressing the
problems in the Food & Beverage operation until
other changes take place. In addition to this, he
also found a position closer to home.

DESERT PRINCESS CRAFTERS
As we start 2015, we have accomplished many things
for 2014. December 17th, we delivered Christmas
packages to 35 of the seniors at Cathedral Palms.
They are always very happy to see us and it is a very
rewarding event for all our members.
We also delivered a large bag of stuffed animals
to the Cathedral City Police Department for them
to distribute to youngsters as they drive through
neighborhoods for Christmas. They also carry them
in their patrol cars and use as needed when a child is
involved in a situation.
Several deliveries were made to the Cathedral
City Boys and Girls Club. Cookies were sent to
four different members of the armed services in
Afghanistan in November.
Thanks to all who contributed to all these events. The
members work very hard to be sure the events are
successful. Baskets are made and sold to the bingo
evenings at the club. This has also been successful.
Thanks to all who have given items to take to the
Senior Center. The Social Worker, Craig Bruce, told
us that of all the things we've taken over, when the
residents finish taking what they can use, there has
been nothing left.
Please come and join our Crafters group here on
Wednesdays from noon until 4 p.m. in the Master's
Lounge. There are always things to do and we
welcome new ideas as well.
If you have questions please call, Barbara Gibson
327-1320, Sharon Hadler 325-3263, Rosie Mascolo 2882889, Maureen McLaughlin 322-1232, or Irene Ripley
325-6839.

Welcome to the New Year! With the golf season in full swing, please
remember tee times for golf members are taken three days in advance
and all other tee times are taken two days in advance. When making
tee time reservations by phone, please use 322-7779.
The Pro Shop staff’s New Year resolution is to improve our members'

commitment from you to attend Patty’s golf clinics. Clinics will be at 10
am on Sundays starting in January and going through March.
In order to keep DPCC in great condition, please remember to fill your
divots with sand, repair ball marks on greens and always use cart
paths when available. By following these few simple tips DPCC will
continue to be one of the best courses to play in the valley. The Adopt
the Hole program still has a few holes that need adopting; if interested

MEN’S GOLF NEWS
Does DP have a Men’s Golf Club?
Sure we do. In a public golf facility the Men’s Club selects
officers and conducts events and activities for all of the club
members. In a private or semi-private facility such as ours,
a committee provides the same services. Our committee is
called the Men’s Golf Tournament Committee.
What services does the Men’s Golf Tournament Committee
provide?
The committee plans and coordinates all tournaments including, the Cactus Classic, and assures members are in compliance with SCGA rules. The committee coordinates with the
Director of Golf to monitor golf scores and the posting of
handicaps. The committee recommends to the Board of Directors policies and procedures to assure sound and effective
management.
Other than Monthly Golf Tournaments, what other activities are there?
Two established groups are open to all members to play and
compete on a daily basis: The Cox group and the Heil group.
The Cox group has a shotgun start at 7:30 am on Monday
through Saturday. The Heil group has a start time at 9 am
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You can signup via the
Desert Princess website.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE
CVWD Turf Removal Project
In an effort to reduce water and also to beautify
the area around the Tennis Courts, the Golf Course
Maintenance staff has begun to change out turf grass
and put in some low water landscape areas. If you've
been by the area recently, you can see the changes
and improvements happening daily. I have been
working closely with homeowner and golf member
Robin Rexius in the designing and implementing the
work of this project.
Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) has a rebate
program where they pay $1 per square foot of turf
removed. Our total area is desinated for the project
is approximately 55,000 sq.ft. and we will perform
the removal in three phases. I am keeping a detailed
spreadsheet for each phase so that the project stays on
budget. The first phase will mostly be on the western
side of the tennis courts, behind the driving range
tee. Pinnacle Design has provided a base plan that is
assisting our design efforts.
We hope to have Phase 1 completed by Jan. 9th. Phase
2 will begin in mid-January and go through February.
Phase 3 will begin in February and be completed in
March.
Our staff has taken many photos to document the
work; here are a few to give you an idea. As the
phases are finished, we will provide those photos as
well.
Happy New Year to all. We look forward to another
great year in 2015.
JONAS CONLAN
Golf Course Superintendent
[email protected]
GREENS COMMITTEE
Happy New Year to everyone! Our golf course is in
its usual great condition and as we move into the
early months of 2015, Jonas will start the new tree
replacement program that was approved by the
Board of Directors at the meeting on Dec. 19, 2014.
The Board has authorized Jonas to spent up to
$15,000 to begin the task of removing trees on the
golf course and replace some of those with different
species. The initial focus will be on the trees that are
a danger to golfers, infastructure and homeowners
or that are dying. Jonas will report back to the
Board monthly informing them of the effects of this
program and they will authorize further funding as
they deem appropriate to continue the project.
The Arborist that consulted to Desert Princess has
suggested that about 250 trees be removed and
replaced by approximately 110 trees of different
species. The Arborist has given Golf Course
Superintendent Jonas Conlan an estimate that these
changes will result in substantial saving for the
maintenance costs, water usage and should result in
a recovery of cost within three years.
Jonas may come knocking on your door this
spring to get your input as to what you and your
neighbours would prefer in the replacement
species near your homes and try to come up with a
workable consensus for everyone affected.
As winter is upon us, please be careful not to walk
or drive your carts on the frost when it shows up
in the early mornings. Please continue to fill your
divots and please repair a few extra pitch marks as
you walk to your golfball.

SAFE & SOUND
Happy New Year Desert Princess!!
Another year on the books and I’m pleased to say
that 2014 has been another overall successful year
for Patrol Services.
Your Patrol Services are responsible for the
community access control, enforcing the rules
and regulations set forth by the community,
and creating a deterrent for criminal activity.
2014 presented some new challenges with the
construction of the 37 acres, setbacks in our second
phase of our surveillance program, and the loss
of some familiar faces within our ranks to bigger
and better things in their careers. However, we
remain diligent and proactive in our approach;
Patrol Services have maintained an excellent core of
personnel that continue to contribute to our success.
Day-to-day operations ran smoothly throughout
the year, perceived problems have been met with
suitable solutions, and suspicious and criminal
activity decreased significantly.
With the development of the 37 acers, Patrol
Services started the year with an increase of activity
in parts of the existing community surrounding the
area, where previously, activity was seldom seen.
After careful consideration of the affected areas and
some coordination with the developer, we were we
able to suppress the increase in criminal activity we
were experiencing. A combination of adjustments
in patrol coverage and identifying key areas of
concern proved beneficial in contained the situation.
We have had no reported incidents of suspicious or
criminal activity in the vicinity surrounding the 37
acers since August 2014, and we intend to continue
this trend through 2015.
The second phase of our Surveillance Program
started in late September of 2014, and as with all
large scale integrations, we encountered some
“technical difficulties” throughout the process.
Some of which were addressed very quickly and
26
resolved with minimal adjustment, while other
aspects of the project are still being fine-tuned to
our satisfaction. Most of the remaining issues to be
addressed have to do with network bandwidth, and
connectivity. Some of the the challenges are internal to
our infrastructure, while others are a matter of proper
configuration of the software and hardware. All the
vendors involved in the integration assure us that
project will be completed very soon.
Patrol Services has been fortunate in having a number
of personnel who have been with us year after year.
We have also had our share of turnover through the
years as well. But, as many of you have notice, we
have recently lost some of our long-time personnel.
They have taken their experience here at the Desert
Princess and gone on to advance their careers in
new endeavors. This has opened the door for some
new faces here. Our staff is ever-evolving, and
our more senior personnel within the department
monitor the new staff diligently to ensure the Desert
Princess Experience maintains its integrity. So, as you
encounter one of our new staff members, by all means,
introduce yourself. Patrol Services will continue to
strive for a high level of professionalism.
2014 had its challenges, but the Desert Princess
remains one of the safest communities in the Coachella
Valley. In 2015 we look forward to continuing our
efforts and maintaining a safe community for all who
visit and reside here.

PATROL SERVICES COMMITTEE
New Year – New Opportunities
2015...can you believe it? The members of the Patrol
Services Committee wish all of our homeowners and
guests the best and safest of New Years! As we enter
this year, we plan to launch a couple of new initiatives
with opportunities for many or all residents in which
to engage and participate.
Many of us are engaged in regular physical activity,
such as walking or cycling on property. We have a
safe, beautiful place to enjoy these and other outdoor
activities. While getting our exercise, we are also in
a unique position to observe our surroundings and
report issues of importance (maintenance, security,
Etc) to Patrol Services and/or the HOA Administration.
We encourage you to carry your cell phone or a note
pad when you walk and immediately notify someone
when you see something suspicious or a maintenance
issue needing quick attention. Look for an informal
meeting on this topic in the near future for those who
are interested in helping be the “eyes and ears” of our
community.
and consider helping your community by being
a volunteer. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY
to participate, but if you have medical, law
enforcement, fire, engineering, or similar experience
we have specific needs in these areas. We look
forward to meeting with you and if you have
questions about this or any aspect of our Patrol
Services operation, I encourage you to ask any
member of our team or attend one of our monthly
meetings.
Again, a safe and Happy New Year to everyone!

As announced separately, our Emergency
Preparedness Committee will host a town hall meeting
on Saturday, Jan. 24 to discuss the ramifications of a
major catastrophic event such as an earthquake, flood
or power grid failure on the lives of our residents.
You will hear from Board and committee members,
public officials and have an opportunity to meet with
local vendors who can assist you in your personal
preparations for such events.
Developing this plan is a significant undertaking. To
be successful, we will need a number of volunteers
to assist in assessment and reporting, as well as
recovery activities in the event of a major incident. I
strongly urge you to attend this informative meeting

ALC BREEZE
Happy New Year to all. Hoping you are staying
warm with the unusual weather we are having. But
the mountains look wonderful with snow on them
and we can still golf and enjoy this beautiful place
we call home.
FROM THE FIRE CHIEF
Slippery When Wet!
Keep those ALC applications coming! We love it
that homeowners like to improve our little part of
paradise.
The roads are slippery from much needed rain, which
means you could slide more if you brake too quickly. Over
time, engine oil and other substances build up on streets,
and when rainwater gets added to the mix, a very slippery
combination results.
We will soon have some new recommendations to
send to the Board for their approval. They relate to
desertscaping front yards on the villas and the types
of materials that will be approved. These include
rock, plants and artificial turf. Arturo and Jessica
have compiled a series of designs and pictures that
we will also look to incorporate in this package. We
are excited about this and look forward to the time
that this can begin for homeowners.
Always give yourself plenty of time to get to your
destination. There’s also a chance that you could get
water in your brakes, which will cause them to lose their
stopping power. Never rush when it’s raining heavily:
accidents are even more likely when weather conditions
are poor. Even if it’s only lightly sprinkling, your
headlights will help you see the road better. Having your
headlights on allows other drivers to see you.
Wishing you all a very happy and healthy new year
filled with family, fun and friends.

Staying away from standing water (like large puddles)
is the best-case scenario, but if you approach one on the
roadway and must drive through it, be sure you slow
down. If you don’t, you risk hydroplaning and losing
control of your car. Passing through deep water could
spell trouble for your car’s engine and brakes.
If you can stay off the road, do so. There’s no sense risking
an accident if you don’t have to. Have your mechanic
check your windshield wipers, brakes and tires.
Did I mention stay off the cell phone? Get off it and
exercise good common sense at all times!
