Dear Titan Family, It is hard to believe that the first semester at TCES is nearly “in the books”. I cannot thank our students, parents, staff, PTO, City of Tega Cay, and our district enough for all the work and resources that have made these past few months a success. Our first semester will end with a half day for students on the 15th, a teacher workday on the 16th, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on the 19th … with the second semester officially beginning on the 20th. Second semester will include MAP for grades 2-5, state testing for grades 3-5 (more details to come), class picture day, Kindergarten Registration, a visit to GHMS for our 5th graders, a promotion ceremony, and much more. I do hope this message finds you having enjoyed your holidays and rejuvenated for 2015. It is indeed our honor and privilege to serve you and your children. We join you in looking forward to a productive and blessed new year! The PTO board is excited about the second half of the year and all that we have left to do. By Marty Ranft, Father of 3, Grandfather of 4 and Owner of Tega Cay McDonald’s Many, many thanks go out to all of our amazing committee chairs and all of the committee volunteers. You are such a big part of why we have a wonderful school! Healthy eating is something many people focus on at the beginning of the New Year. However, as we all know, healthy eating with busy families back in school and hectic work schedules is often easier said than done! The last PTO meeting in December we had Ms. Wells, Ms. Gupton, and Mr. Gardner attend. They talked about all of the testing that our kids do throughout the year. It was a wonderful discussion on the “what’s” and the “how’s” and we encourage you to look at the minutes to the meeting for details! We so appreciate them coming and providing such an interesting and helpful discussion. When family schedules necessitate the option of dining out instead of dining in, there are always choices you can make that are healthier than others. Now most places, even typical “fast food” establishments, have healthy options. The key is to know what is available and how to make those choices once you are there. The following tips and recommendations can help your family stay on track. Our goal for the rest of the year is to make our PTO meetings as effective and worthwhile as possible. We are planning on more guest speakers, hopefully one for each of the remaining meetings and welcome any input on possible speakers. We will be taking nominations for Board positions at the March PTO meeting and voting will take place at the April PTO meeting for voting members. Hope to see you there! • Try to keep your entire meal calories intake in mind while making dinning choices—most places now post nutritional information on their menus to assist you in making the best choice for yourself and your family • Focus on grilled roasted lean 1 Titans 4.75or x 3.5 ad Jan.pdf meats and salads 12/15/14 10:22 PM We Have Moved! If you have any comments or questions, please email us at [email protected] family game night from 5:30 pm – 8 pm • Opt for healthy side choices, such as fresh fruit, yogurt, or a side salad instead of fries or other heavy starches • Don’t be afraid to special order— for example you can ask to hold the sauce or dressing or serve it on the side. Try opting for holding the mayo or tarter. Then ask for a packet on the side so you can control how much you use • Stick to zero-calorie beverages, unsweetened flavored ice tea is a great alternative to sugary soda • For salads choose low-fat and fat-free dressing and/or ask for it on the side C See what your Tega Cay home is worth @ 803HomeValue.com. Thank you for your kind hearts and overwhelming generosity. Your efforts were truly appreciated by the recipients. And, by all of us at TCES PTO. Page 4 | January 2015 | Titan Times healthy titans e-Cigarettes: The New Household Toxin on the Block Jennifer Terrell, MD E-cigarettes, sold as a newer and “not-so-healthy” alternative to smoking tobacco have caused an alarming increase in calls to U.S. poison centers nationwide. With the new popularity of these devices, calls to poison centers have sharply increased regarding ingestion of the liquid nicotine that is vaporized within the e-cigarettes to be inhaled by the user. Up to 40% of calls to poison centers last year were related to nicotine ingestions from e-cigarette refills. Nicotine is one of the most toxic naturally occurring substances. Prior to the introduction of e-cigarettes, these toxic ingestions were far less common and and less severe as nicotine preparations (gum, lozenges, and patches to aid in smoking cessation) contained less concentrated forms of nicotine. However, the newer liquid nicotine refills for e-cigarettes pose an ominous health hazard to both adults and children. Smaller children are very attracted to the vibrant colors and smells of these new preparations. Teens and adults are attracted to the “coolfactor” and dubious claims by the manufacturers that these products are a healthier alternative to smoking tobacco. E-cigarettes are available in chocolate, vanilla, mint, or many other flavors making them very intriguing to toddlers. The liquid can be absorbed very quickly by swallowing as well as contact with the skin. Therefore, both drinking the liquid and spilling it on the skin can cause toxic levels of nicotine in the bloodstream. Symptoms include vomiting, fast heart rate, agitation, and seizures. Any of these symptoms must be treated in an emergency department immediately. Most refill preparations for e-cigarettes are not childproof. They can be sold in small cartridges or gallon jugs. The same vigilance that parents use for household cleaners and other poisons must be maintained for liquid nicotine. Unfortunately, as this substance is not regulated by the F.D.A. the concentrations can vary wildly as can the packaging. Maintain open communication with teens and pre-teens regarding the toxicity of this substance. These are new products and many youngsters, adult friends, and family members may be unaware of the dangers that they pose. Of course, the safest way to avoid this hazard is to exclude these products from your home. If you or your child ingests or has a significant skin exposure to liquid nicotine, call the Carolinas Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222. Did You Know? Liquid nicotine concentrations vary widely among brands and are unregulated by the F.D.A. Swallowing as little as a teaspoon of concentrated liquid nicotine sold for “vaping” can kill a child. Up to 10% of middle and high school students use e-cigarettes regularly. New Year, New Ride! Titan Times | January 2015 | Page 5 MEET MS. BOUCHER contact Email Ms. Boucher at [email protected] for more information on what’s going on in technology. Ms. Boucher also facilitates the TCES Morning News show. Six groups of 5th graders are able to be a part of the Tega Cay News Team. One group will produce the news every week. The students produce the show, write the scripts, create the animations, announce/interview and operate the camera equipment. The news show can be seen on the school website if you would like to check out what the 5th grade News crew is up to! WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TECHNOLOGY After many years of operating a Sod Company in Charleston/Charlotte, Ms. Boucher was able to pursue her dream of becoming an Elementary school teacher. She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She has worked for the Lancaster and Fort Mill School Districts and was a parttime Technology Teacher for Fort Mill Elementary last year and taught 2nd and 4th grade. She was hired this year to be the Technology Teacher for Tega Cay and she can’t imagine working anywhere else! Technology is such a great discipline to master and she is thrilled that she is a part of this process for the students at TCES. Students currently are learning about and using Google Drive in the classroom for class projects, creating original work and collaborating with peers. Google Drive gives students access to their creations and work from any location on the planet and allows them to communicate and collaborate with their fellow students. For the rest of the year students will be learning Word Processing, Keyboarding, Online Safety, and Research/Information fluency. hour of code The first two and a half weeks of December students participated in the “Hour of Code” program. This is a worldwide initiative to get students to learn how to read and write computer code while promoting Computer Literacy. Millions of students all over the world are learning what code is and how it works. Students are writing code and developing their own games with computer programming and coding. Computer programming gives students an opportunity to hone their problem solving skills and learn patience. Students from Fort Mill High School spent time with our students working on coding projects. A great resource for helping your child continue with what they have been learning in this unit can be found at http://csedweek.org/learn. “ I think everyone in this country should learn to program a computer. Everyone should learn a computer language because it teaches you how to think. I think of computer science as a liberal art.” —Steve Jobs pto Partners in your community Counselor’s Corner Goal Setting for the New Year Jennifer Levan, M.Ed. NBCT-SC Grades 1, 2, 3, & 5 Stacey D. Rothaupt, M.Ed., Ed.S. Grades K & 4 “Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.” Happy New Year! There is a lot in store for 2015 here at TCES. Mrs. Levan will be out on maternity leave and Mrs. Tara Darby will be joining the TCES family as her long-term sub. Tara is an experienced school counselor who has worked with children at the elementary and high school level. Please join us in welcoming her. Classroom guidance, individual counseling, and small group counseling will all still be available during Mrs. Darby’s time here with us at TCES. During classroom guidance lessons, in grades 2-5 counselors will be working on the process of goal setting. What a great time of year to start setting measurable, action driven, & realistic goals. Please consider helping your child set a few goals for the New Year. Wonder why goal setting is important? Purpose. Having a strong sense of purpose boosts self-belief and can improve your child’s confidence. Focus. Having a goal in life helps them make better decisions. Motivation. It gives them motivation in life. Kids who have dreams (goals) – whether sporting or academic or even personal ones – will do better in life than kids with no plan at all.
