Sensex surges 2.7 per cent
MUMBAI: The BSE Sensex
and Nifty rose more than 2.5
per cent yesterday, marking
their biggest daily gain in eight
months, after blue-chips led by
interest rate-sensitive stocks
surged on hopes the central
bank’s surprise rate cut will
stoke growth.
The NSE bank index rose as
much as 4.3pc to a record high
of 19,410.40 after the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) cut interest rates by 25 basis point and
signalled it could cut further,
amid cooling inflation and the
government’s efforts to contain fiscal deficit.
Lower borrowing costs
supported by a steep fall in
commodity prices, especially
crude oil, are expected to boost
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans to kick-start investments and earnings in Asia’s
third largest economy.
The Sensex rose as much as
3.1pc during the day
before ending 2.66pc
higher.
The broader Nifty
ended up 2.62pc after
earlier rising as much
as 3pc.
The
indexes
marked their biggest
daily gains since May 9, 2014.
“It is a big positive for the
market. RBI will now wait for
the government to take measures to address supply-side
issues, stick to fiscal consolidation and initiate further reforms before they announce
more cuts,” said Dipen Shah,
head of private client group research at Kotak Securities.
Lower-than-expected inflation has been enabled by lower
global crude oil prices, weaker demand
conditions globally
and locally, and the
government’s commitment towards fiscal consolidation, RBI
said. Consumer Price
Index (CPI) data released on Monday showed that
retail inflation grew by 5pc in
December, while Wholesale
Price Index (WPI) data released on Wednesday showed
wholesale inflation expanded
by just 0.1pc.
“A welcome move by RBI.

The move marks a regime
shift in policy stance. Here
on, growth objective will gain
precedence even as policymakers keep a firm eye on
inflation,” said Vikas Khemani, president & CEO at Edelweiss Securities Ltd.
“The critical question now
is not ‘when exactly,’ but
‘how much’ policy easing
can one expect. In my view,
there is a scope of more than
100 bps easing in the coming
year.” Khemani added.
All the sectoral indices on
BSE rose.
The realty index was the
top sectoral gainer, up 7.99pc,
followed by the Bankex and
capital goods, which were up
3.29pc and 2.40pc, respectively. The automotive, oil
and gas, and power indices
were up 2.13pc, 2.01 and
2.10, respectively.
The FMCG, metal, and

IT and consumer durables
were up 0.53pc and 1.11pc,
respectively. BSE mid-cap index rose as much as 1.63pc to
