THE SPIRIT OF SUMMER 2013 ESSEX COUNTY GROVER CLEVELAND PARK CELEBRATES 100 YEARS History on the Move in Essex County Essex County Turtle Back Zoo 50th Anniversary Celebration Summer Music Concert Series 47th Annual Jazz in the Garden Series COMPLIMENTARY ISSUE PAGE 5 PAGE 6 PAGE 9 PAGE 14 Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Essex County Executive and the Board of Chosen Freeholders Daniel K. Salvante Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs PUTTING ESSEX COUNTY FIRST A Message from the County Executive Summer has arrived and, with it, Mother Nature’s palate, bursting with color. In May, our internationally famous Presby Memorial Iris Gardens – appropriately known as “The Rainbow on the Hill” for the hundreds of Iris types in bloom, deserves your attention. In June, wander through the fragrant Rose Gardens in Essex County Brookdale Park, now maintained by our Master Gardeners. These natural wonders are breathtaking and are perfect backdrops for special events, photographs or just a summer stroll. Another park highlight is the 100th anniversary of Essex County Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell/Essex Fells. This 41.61acre park is the seventh largest jewel in our historic Essex County Parks System. We are pleased to be partnering with the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy on a number of events to celebrate this milestone and welcome you to join us at the concerts, conversation groups and community events that are planned and listed in this edition. As always, we encourage you to stay local and enjoy the fine performances, exhibits, displays and cultural events that take place right here in Essex County. Many organizations and groups have shared information about upcoming performances and shows on the pages of this newsletter. Not only will you be amazed at the talent and creativity found in Essex, but you won’t have to travel far. We should be proud and supportive of our local groups, and I’m sure we won’t be disappointed. Working together we will continue Putting Essex County First. Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. Essex County Executive and the Board of Chosen Freeholders This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs received an operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State. 2 The Spirit of Essex Cover: Vintage photograph of boys by pond courtesy of Warren Marchioni CELEBRATING 100 YEARS! Highlights of a Century Essex County Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell/Essex Fells is 100 years old in 2013. This attractive, 42-plus acre park has experienced extensive restoration in the past decade through the alliance of Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy. To celebrate the anniversary, the Conservancy presented a series of four lectures this spring: addressing Olmstead parks in Essex County, the history and natural history of Essex County Grover Cleveland Park, and future of the park: preserving its woodlands. As the first county park in western Essex County, the site was originally selected for its natural beauty and the possibilities it held to provide space for relaxation and recreation. It contains gentle rolling hills, broad meadows, a meandering brook and a glistening pond. The first acreage was purchased in June 1913. Construction began in 1915, but was halted with the onset of World War I. The playground, ball field and tennis courts opened to the public in 1923. Because of its location, the park has typically had a longer ice skating season than any other park in the system. Then, as now, the park has attracted great numbers of children and families to its sliding boards and swings, to fishing derbies and softball games, and supervised summer programs. It has hosted movies, shows, jazz concerts, rock and roll fests, and firework displays over its hundred-year history. Looking forward to the next 100 years and the enjoyment this parkland brings not only to neighbors, but to families drawn from miles around, the Conservancy intends to hold fast to the Olmstead tradition by keeping “these pleasure grounds not only attractive to the eye in their natural and aesthetic adornment” (Kelsey, 1905), but also functional for rest and recreation for all. The only U.S. President born in the state, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association, located in his hometown of Caldwell, brings his presidency to life at educational institutions and service organizations through the Traveling Trunks program. Traveling trunks are portable history lessons available to travel to schools and organizations for a hands-on introduction to local, state and national history. A confederate jacket, a copper bed warmer, Victorian clothing, and toys and games from the 1830s are only examples of what the chests contain. Audiences young and old will be fascinated by artifacts common to the life of President Grover Cleveland. Arrangements for a traveling trunk can be made at [email protected]. For information on the Grover Cleveland Birthplace in Caldwell, visit Dennis Murray, creator of the Traveling Trunk program, and Grover Cleveland Middle School Principal James Brown in front of Grover Cleveland Middle School. In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, South Arts, a non-profit regional arts organization, launched a national initiative for preparedness in the arts. South Arts quickly realized arts organizations had either no readiness plans or insufficient readiness plans. This meant that organizations had to struggle to come back after a disaster, if they were able to come back at all. Enter the ArtsReady initiative. ArtsReady is a web-based emergency preparedness, business continuity, and sustainability planning tool. Their website is meant to cultivate the need for “all hazards” readiness and provide resources to promote sustaining business continuity. Basic Membership is free and gives arts agencies access to the ArtsReady newsletter, updates on response, recovery and readiness, and access to the ArtsReady Library. “The arts community plays a vital role in our local economy and contributes greatly to our quality of life. Just as government and business must prepare for the future, so must our arts organizations. We encourage you to take a look at this information and see how it can help,” Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. said. “With Hurricane Sandy in our recent past, now is the time to prepare New Jersey’s cultural organizations for future emergencies of all kinds,” said Kate Hartwyk, Director of the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs. Preparation should include making plans for proper insurance coverage, coordinated communications among staff, volunteers and patrons, and a strong relationship with local safety and emergency organizations. The Division encourages cultural organizations of all sizes to begin the preparation process by visiting the ArtsReady website at www.artsready.org.
