Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Mission Statement
St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Rocky Point, is a faith
community, a parish family of loving, caring,
welcoming and spiritual people. We serve and support
the community through worship, forma on and
outreach. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are called to
“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal
St. Anthony’s will begin the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal next week. We sincerely thank
you for your past support in this important campaign. Please note that we will not be doing
our usual parish mailing this year. In past years you would have received a le er and pledge
form in the mail during the week prior to the start of the Appeal. Since the Diocese also
does their own mailing, we have received many requests to stop our mailing to avoid the
duplica on.
As usual we will have volunteers at the back of the Church to collect your pledge. We know
everyone’s situa on is different, but, if you are financially able, you are invited to turn in
your pledge at the back of the Church over the next 3 weeks or send it in to the Diocese or
the Rectory. You can use the pledge card from the Diocese or our Pledge form. That form
will be printed in the bulle n, can be found a the end of each pew next week or available at
the back of the Church over the next three weekends.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Looking for some peace and quiet in your life?
The best kind of friend is the one with whom you can spend me without having to say anything. You can just share the moment and enjoy
each other's company, knowing your rela onship is deeper than the
spoken word. That kind of silent communica on is what takes place
between you and Jesus when you par cipate in Eucharis c Adora on.
Eucharis c Adora on is the spiritual prac ce of spending me in the
presence of the exposed Host. Eucharis c Adora on provides us with a
chance to be with our Savior one on one. Through this prac ce, we are
invited to spend me alone with God in his real, physical form and to
bring to Jesus all our cares, concerns, prayers, hopes and thoughts. We set aside a special
me, a respite from our hec c modern lives, to create a personal space in which to meet
our God.
Join us for as much me as you need. Every Wednesday, Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament begins at 3PM and con nues through 9PM. The Rosary is prayed at 7:30PM. The Prayer group then prays before the Blessed Sacrament un l 9PM. On Saturday Exposi on of the
Blessed Sacrament is between 3:30PM to 4:30PM.
Watching For The Messiah
Today's Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus sounds so simple and
casual, it's easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made. John points to Jesus:
"Look," he says, "there is the Lamb of God." John's faith in Jesus is evident, so evident that
John's disciples immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend me with him, and are
quick to spread the good news of their discovery: "We have found the Messiah."
It is easy to forget that the expecta ons of genera ons, the hopes of many ages of faithful
people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for signs of the presence of
the Messiah today?©Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right me for the
sacrament. Although physical improvement was o en noted a er anoin ng, it was seen as a
kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, paence, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people s ll do not ask for
anoin ng un l it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at
least be aware enough to par cipate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for via cum, the true "last rite."
We have a treasure in our tradi on that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint
those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we
keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anoin ng is celebrated early enough, op mally when the sick person is s ll at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and
hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to
Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal,
and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of
touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait un l the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul? James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

YEAR OF SACRAMENTS
ONE WORD AT A TIME
Free
We know that Bap sm unites us with Christ in his dying and rising. We know that because of our union with him, we are God’s
beloved daughters and sons in the Son. And besides all this, because Christ is our life through Bap sm, something else happens. He sets us free from the two most enslaving and burdensome reali es of our lives. He frees us from sin and death.
Sin entraps us, usually within ourselves. And on our own, we cannot break free.
Death and the impending sense of doom and loss it brings seem to box us into the
narrow confines of our very short earthly lives. Bap sm loosens the grip of sin
through forgiveness, and it loosens the grip of death through new and eternal life in
Christ Jesus. We are free to be who we really and truly are—the children of God.
POPE FRANCIS’ VISION OF HEALING AND COMMUNION
More on Pope Francis’ Vision at www.loyolapress.com/popefrancispopefrancis.com
Reflecting on God’s Word
Once more we stand with John the Bap st and learn from what he does. Watching Jesus walk
by, he says to two of his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” And “the two disciples heard
what he said and followed Jesus” (John 1:36–37). One was Andrew, who, in turn, goes to his
brother Simon and brings him to Jesus. And Jesus gives him a new name, Cephas, which
means “rock.”
A new life begins for Andrew and Simon, and most likely for the other disciple as well, possibly either James or John (both were fishermen with Peter and Andrew). It was clear to Jesus
that they were searching for something: “What are you looking for?” They answered,
“Teacher, where are you staying?” implying that it was going to take more than a few minutes
to answer that ques on. Jesus took them in immediately: “Come, and you will see . . . And
they stayed with him that day” (John 1:38–39).
As we return to Ordinary Time, which comes from the La n ordo (“numbered”), we count the
weeks off by numbers: Second Sunday, Third Sunday, and so on. But “ordinary me” is lived in
a world touched by God’s grace. God con nues to come into our lives, if we would no ce.
Like John poin ng out Jesus to his two disciples, the old priest Eli helps Samuel to understand
that the Lord is entering the boy’s life and tells him to respond, “Speak, L
, for your servant
is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9). We bring each other to God, to Jesus Christ, by being a en ve to
how God is at work among us. God con nues to work through each of us, and that is what
makes “ordinary me” con nuously extraordinary.
