The Children’s Hospital
Tom’s Ward
Information for
inpatients and their
parents / carers
Welcome to Tom’s Ward
This leaflet contains some useful information about the ward to
hopefully make your stay easier. If you have any questions, please
speak to your child’s nurse.
Accommodation
• Most beds have a sofa bed next to them for one parent to stay
with their child.
• Alternative accommodation can be requested in Ronald
McDonald House. This is allocated according to individual
priority and therefore not guaranteed.
• A Ronald McDonald pass can be obtained from your child’s
nurse to use the shower facilities.
• The toilets on the ward are for patient use. Toilets for parents
and visitors are situated outside the ward entrance.
• Private rooms are allocated according to clinical need and
therefore are not guaranteed for your child’s whole stay.
Ward Rules
• No hot drinks are allowed on the ward for reasons of patient
safety.
• Please provide any nappies / wipes / clothes your child or baby
may require.
• Only one parent or carer may stay overnight due to limited
space on the ward.
• Visiting times are flexible during the day, but we ask that
visitors leave by 8pm.
• Visitors under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an
adult.
Infection Control
• Please wash or gel your hands when entering the ward.
• If your child is in isolation please keep the door closed and
make sure your child remains inside the room at all times.
• Please do not pacify other people’s children (e.g. don’t pick
them up or put dummies back in their mouths)
• Feeds must be made up in the milk kitchen and cannot be
made on the ward. If your baby is on a formula feed, please
bring in an unopened tin.
Refreshments
• There is a beverage room with a fridge on the ward for staff
and parents to make drinks and food for children. Please
make sure that any food stored in the fridge is named and
dated.
• There is a parents’ room off the ward with tea/coffee facilities
and a fridge and microwave.
Parking
If your child is in hospital for longer than
24 hours, a one-week permit is available for a reduced rate.
Please speak to your child’s nurse.
