Welcome for Religious Sisters
On the weekend of January 4, our parish welcomed three
Religious Sisters who will be working at St. Joseph Parish in
Martinsburg as well as at St. James here in Charles Town.
Following each Mass, a reception was held in the narthex so
that Mother Virginia, Sister MariLu, and Sister Ariceli could
meet the members of our parish community. When you see
them in the parish and out in the community in coming weeks,
be sure to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome!

Dear Friends,
Birthdays this week:
This weekend we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary
Time. Ordinary Time will continue until we begin the Season of
Lent on Ash Wednesday which, this year, is February 18. No
matter the season, our Liturgical Year continues to challenge us
to look beyond, to continue to grow.
In our first reading taken from First Samuel, we listen to a familiar story of life. Adults
might recall how we began to think of “what we would like to do in life” during our
teenage years. Perhaps we ebbed and flowed with different vocations. Isn’t that normal?
Likewise, in the call of Samuel as we hear in this weekend’s first reading, analogously
speaking, Samuel came to Eli to respond to what he presumed to be Eli’s call to him,
which is similar to our own struggle to find our vocation. While we usually associate
the term “vocation” with a religious meaning, vocation is really much deeper than that,
isn’t it? Vocation is really using our talents for God’s work in whatever we do in life.
Likewise John, the evangelist, challenges us in another way. In this scene John the
Baptist is standing with two of his disciples. Perhaps we can presume they were simply
watching people go by and all of a sudden John the Baptist notes the passage of Jesus.
Here we experience a change in vocation. Doesn’t that also happen in our lives? Don’t
we sometimes find that we need to change our direction? Isn’t that God’s Grace
working in our lives?
Respectfully yours,
Fr. John

Watching for the Messiah
Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus sounds
so simple and casual, it’s easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the Lamb of God.” John’s faith in
Jesus is evident, so evident that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow
this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with
him, and are quick to spread the good news of their discovery: “We have found the
Messiah.”
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of
faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the
Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish
people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for
signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

Treasures From our Tradi on
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent
tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People
resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the
sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after
anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected
outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even
healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do
not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to
have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to
participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for
viaticum, the true “last rite.”
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to
use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis
of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we
keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is
celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at
Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a
difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them
that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring
them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give
strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the
sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why
wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich
remedy to body and soul?

From the Offertory
Office
In order to simplify and reduce labor and
cost associated with the special
collections/appeals from the Diocese of
Wheeling-Charleston, the following
procedure will be implemented:
Contributions received 2 weeks past the
specified collection date will be placed
into the Catholic Charities West Virginia
collection (this was the most popular
DWC Special Collection at St. James in
2014). This will affect those who send in
contributions bimonthly or less often.
This will also save St. James and the
Diocese the cost of issuing and mailing
checks for the small amounts that trickle
in late (these amounts are usually less
than $5.00). All contributions received
prior to the 2 weeks after the collection
date WILL go into the proper
Collection/Appeal.

the needs and concerns of those who
have been away from the Church.
Volunteers Needed for Cold Weather Shelter
The cold weather shelter opened on November 1st and we are in need of overnight
volunteers (8:45 pm to 6:30 am). Similar to last year, the shelter will be rotated on a
weekly/biweekly basis to a number of area churches to provide homeless men and
women a warm place to spend the night. The shelter will be hosted by St. James (in
St. Michael’s) the weeks of January 10th, January 24th, and January 31st. We have
committed to filling the shifts for these weeks solely from St. James parishioners. So
please consider filling a shift (or more) during these
weeks. In addition, we are badly in need of volunteers
while the shelter is located at other churches, some of
which are too small to cover all of the shifts. Shelter
information including the volunteer schedule can be
found at the Jefferson County Homeless Coalition
website at http://jchcwv.org. Please contact Chris
Hunter at [email protected] if interested.

Ministry Spotlight: Cursillo
Cursillo
An Encounter with Christ
As your faith is challenged in a pluralistic world, ask yourself . . .
Do you want to live your faith in your daily life?
Do you desire a Christian Community with which to share your faith journey?
Do you wish to enrich your relationship with God?
Do you want to be more confident in sharing your faith with our secular world?
If you answered “yes” to these questions,
Cursillo will help you develop, live and share
your spirituality in today’s society.
Cursillo is pronounced “kur-see-yo” and is a movement that promotes a
spiritual revitalization of our world. The transference of the values of Christ
to others with whom we come in contact is the Christianization that Cursillo
promotes.
Cursillo awakens a consciousness of power and the mission to become a leader in the work of Christian
renewal, with the support of Christian community.
It begins with a weekend:
A three-day weekend helps you experience your Catholic faith more fully.
You are motivated to engage in a spiritual life filled with joy, laughter, and enthusiasm.
Discover an enhanced relationship with God.
Discussions, led by a team of Catholic lay people and spiritual advisors, will emphasize:
• the meaning of grace and the Sacraments
• the need for prayer and ways of living life in union with God

tradition, or baptized Catholics who have had little or no
religious training. Are you already a Catholic who wants to
deepen your faith? Anyone interested in exploring the Catholic
faith is invited to attend! Classes are held each Sunday from

Sunday 3rd Grade
The third grade religious education class on Sunday has been
recently reading about and discussing about God's Tender
Mercy, Meeting Jesus in Confirmation, and The Christ Child is
Born. The students take turns reading the chapters and work in
the activity book afterwards. Our class is reading about how
God's merciful love is endless and that Jesus is the Good
Shepherd. We discussed the steps to follow in the confessional
and learned that the Sacrament of Penance is a Sacrament of
Healing. The students also read about Mary, Joseph, and how the
Christ Child was conceived and then born in a manger in
Bethlehem. We also read about how the three wise men came to
pay homage to Jesus, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh.

listed for each person listed throughout the bulletin at
the top of the ministry page for which that staff
member has been entrusted.

JOINING ST. JAMES
Becoming a part of our parish family is easy and rewarding. Registration forms
can be found in the Narthex or Parish Office. Once a registration form is
submitted, new parishioners will receive a welcome packet and an invitation to
learn more about St. James and meet some of your new family members. Get
connected, get involved, register today.
BECOMING A CATHOLIC
St. James offers a religious education process called RCIA (Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults). Through RCIA, people learn about the Catholic Faith and
prepare to become full members of our Catholic family. This process is also
available for children and teens. Contact the Parish Office for additional
information.
CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME
Catholics Returning Home is a program that provides a warm welcome to all
desiring to return to the Catholic Church. Voice your concerns and get answers
to your questions. For more information, email [email protected] or
call Gwyn Wathen (304-725-3215).
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
As adults, our second most important job is raising our children in our Catholic
faith. (Our most important job, of course, is maintaining our own relationship
with our Heavenly Father.) Families registered in our parish may enroll their
children in religious education as early as the age of three. Contact the Director
of Religious Education for more information. Various adult faith formation
classes are offered on a regular basis and are listed in the bulletin.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptism is the first sacrament by which we receive a new and spiritual life and
the dignity of adoption as children of God and heirs of God's kingdom.
Registered families can celebrate this sacrament at St. James, but parents must
attend a Baptism class which is held at 12:30 pm on the last Sunday of every
month. Contact the Parish Office to register for a class before the birth of your
baby.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. If you are a
registered, active member of the parish considering this vocation, you must
meet with Deacon Dave at least six months before your desired wedding date.
No date will be set prior to that meeting. For further information or to begin
this process, contact the parish secretary.
SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING
The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or
Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing. It is available after the 10:00 am First
Saturday Mass each month. Also, should you or a family member be entering
the hospital, preparing for surgery, or nearing death, contact the Parish Office.
THE HISTORIC CHAPEL OF ST. PETER
A Tourist Mass is celebrated at The Historic Chapel of St. Peter in Harpers
Ferry, West Virginia on Sundays at 11:00 am. The Chapel is also open to
visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon until to 4:00 pm most
weekends from May through October.
