José Manuel Escalante, [email protected] or 304-725-5558 Parish Secretary: Chris Pifer, [email protected] or 304-725-5558 Dear Friends, Birthdays this week: This weekend we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time will continue until we begin the Season of Lent on Ash Wednesday which, this year, is February 18. No matter the season, our Liturgical Year continues to challenge us to look beyond, to continue to grow. In our first reading taken from First Samuel, we listen to a familiar story of life. Adults might recall how we began to think of “what we would like to do in life” during our teenage years. Perhaps we ebbed and flowed with different vocations. Isn’t that normal? Likewise, in the call of Samuel as we hear in this weekend’s first reading, analogously speaking, Samuel came to Eli to respond to what he presumed to be Eli’s call to him, which is similar to our own struggle to find our vocation. While we usually associate the term “vocation” with a religious meaning, vocation is really much deeper than that, isn’t it? Vocation is really using our talents for God’s work in whatever we do in life. Likewise John, the evangelist, challenges us in another way. In this scene John the Baptist is standing with two of his disciples. Perhaps we can presume they were simply watching people go by and all of a sudden John the Baptist notes the passage of Jesus. Here we experience a change in vocation. Doesn’t that also happen in our lives? Don’t we sometimes find that we need to change our direction? Isn’t that God’s Grace working in our lives? Respectfully yours, Fr. John UPCOMING EVENTS: • Wednesday, January 21 at 5:30 pm: Catholic Charities Regional Advisory Board Meeting in Martinsburg • Saturday, January 24 at 6:00 pm: Red Mass for the Bench and Bar with His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan praying for Attorneys and Judges at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling • Tuesday, January 27 at 6:00 pm: Community Potluck Dinner here at Saint James, an opportunity to share and witness to our Catholic Christian Faith with other Christian Communities in our local area Jan 19: Cara Anderson, Jordan Carter, Tom DeLeonardo, Christopher Galipo, John Kennan, Albert Marrone, Erich Nathan, Lisa Ocasio, Sonja Raez, Albert Rhoa, Alfred Rizk; Jan 20: Natasha Backus, Debra DeLeonardo, Maritza Dyck, Rebecca Hoback, Gene Kelleher, Cathy Kerns, Kelly Lopez-Meza, Agnes McAuliffe, Inez Ortiz, Sebastiana Reynoso, Kara Rudnick, Carol Runge, Jesse Runge, Vanessa Schleicher, Briana Shea, Diane Szallay; Jan 21: Calvin Anderson, Gaylord Finch, Sedrick Henley, Caitlin Klug, Allison Knight, Elizabeth Lowrie, Lee Muir, Ramses Oviedo-Antunez, Cesar Portillo-Torres; Jan 22: Lorena Cabrera, Bill Gillette, James Keisler, Madeline Kline, Derek Phillips, Michael Willburn; Jan 23: Ann Breeden, Michael Condon, Ines Elpidio, Ines Fernandez, Ethan Meagher, Carlo Olivares, Dominic Paul-Dunne, Mary Lou Stillwell, Roger Tingley, Rosa Turk; Jan 24: Thomas Berkman, Shelly Bury, Ava Eisenman, Patrick Fagan, Dennis Henriquez, James Hudson, Erich Lichtscheidl, Morgan Marshall, Jim McCarthy, Jeffrey Plautz, Julia Sanchez, Sean Timberlake; Jan 25: Keegan Bogolin, Kevin Boone, David DuFort, Andrew Greenan, Sean Hoyt, Marsha Hubbs, Kendra Jalbert, Guadalupe Leon, Dominik Lichtscheidl, Patricia Lynch, Colton Mason, Fabian Ortiz, Maria Ruiz, Stefan Runge, and Marnie Sasis. Watching for the Messiah Today’s Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it’s easy to miss the significant acts of faith that are made. John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the Lamb of God.” John’s faith in Jesus is evident, so evident that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus. The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick to spread the good news of their discovery: “We have found the Messiah.” It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today? Page 3 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. January 18, 2015 Su Jan 25 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Psalm 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9 I Corinthians 7:29-31 Saint Mark 1:14-20 Treasures From our Tradi on Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.” We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. We ask that you bring a dish to share, and come join in fellowship with our Christian friends and neighbors from the local community. ________________________________ From the Offertory Office In order to simplify and reduce labor and cost associated with the special collections/appeals from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, the following procedure will be implemented: Contributions received 2 weeks past the specified collection date will be placed into the Catholic Charities West Virginia collection (this was the most popular DWC Special Collection at St. James in 2014). This will affect those who send in contributions bimonthly or less often. This will also save St. James and the Diocese the cost of issuing and mailing checks for the small amounts that trickle in late (these amounts are usually less than $5.00). All contributions received prior to the 2 weeks after the collection date WILL go into the proper Collection/Appeal. Page 6 NEWPARISHIONERS The parish family of St. James warmly welcomes our newest registered parishioners! Catholics Returning Home is a sixweek series of sessions which address the needs and concerns of those who have been away from the Church. Volunteers Needed for Cold Weather Shelter The cold weather shelter opened on November 1st and we are in need of overnight volunteers (8:45 pm to 6:30 am). Similar to last year, the shelter will be rotated on a weekly/biweekly basis to a number of area churches to provide homeless men and women a warm place to spend the night. The shelter will be hosted by St. James (in St. Michael’s) the weeks of January 10th, January 24th, and January 31st. We have committed to filling the shifts for these weeks solely from St. James parishioners. So please consider filling a shift (or more) during these weeks. In addition, we are badly in need of volunteers while the shelter is located at other churches, some of which are too small to cover all of the shifts. Shelter information including the volunteer schedule can be found at the Jefferson County Homeless Coalition website at http://jchcwv.org. Please contact Chris Hunter at [email protected] if interested. Will you Bake Valen ne Cookies for Local Hospice Workers? It is time to dig out our favorite cookie recipes and sign up to bake cookies for Hospice. When Hospice collects the cookies from area churches, they distribute Valentine bags to funeral homes, area doctors, social workers, and other groups who support Hospice's mission. Cookies (please, no brownies or fudge) need to be delivered to the Parish Office at St. James Church on Monday, February 9, by 2:00 pm. When delivering your cookies to the Parish Office, please put your name and the amount you have baked on your package and then sign the sign-up sheet. In the past, our parish has been one of the largest contributors, and we hope this year to be number one! Please find sign-up sheets on our bulletin boards. Tasha Clark American Heritage Girls January 18, 2015 Ministry Spotlight: Cursillo Cursillo An Encounter with Christ As your faith is challenged in a pluralistic world, ask yourself . . . Do you want to live your faith in your daily life? Do you desire a Christian Community with which to share your faith journey? Do you wish to enrich your relationship with God? Do you want to be more confident in sharing your faith with our secular world? If you answered “yes” to these questions, Cursillo will help you develop, live and share your spirituality in today’s society. Cursillo is pronounced “kur-see-yo” and is a movement that promotes a spiritual revitalization of our world. The transference of the values of Christ to others with whom we come in contact is the Christianization that Cursillo promotes. Cursillo awakens a consciousness of power and the mission to become a leader in the work of Christian renewal, with the support of Christian community. It begins with a weekend: A three-day weekend helps you experience your Catholic faith more fully. You are motivated to engage in a spiritual life filled with joy, laughter, and enthusiasm. Discover an enhanced relationship with God. Discussions, led by a team of Catholic lay people and spiritual advisors, will emphasize: • the meaning of grace and the Sacraments • the need for prayer and ways of living life in union with God UPCOMING WEST VIRGININA WEEKENDS (to be held at Priest Field Pastoral Center in Kearneysville): Men’s Cursillo Weekend: Women’s Cursillo Weekend: February 19-22, 2015 February 26-March 1, 2015 For additional information, contact Susan Kersey at [email protected] or 304-725-1435 January 18, 2015 Page 8 Faith Formation Adult Formation: Rev. Through RCIA, people learn about the Catholic Faith and prepare to become full members of our Catholic family. This process is also available for children and teens. Contact the Parish Office for additional information. CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME Catholics Returning Home is a program that provides a warm welcome to all desiring to return to the Catholic Church. Voice your concerns and get answers to your questions. For more information, email [email protected] or call Gwyn Wathen (304-725-3215). RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As adults, our second most important job is raising our children in our Catholic faith. (Our most important job, of course, is maintaining our own relationship with our Heavenly Father.) Families registered in our parish may enroll their children in religious education as early as the age of three. Contact the Director of Religious Education for more information. Various adult faith formation classes are offered on a regular basis and are listed in the bulletin. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Baptism is the first sacrament by which we receive a new and spiritual life and the dignity of adoption as children of God and heirs of God's kingdom. Registered families can celebrate this sacrament at St. James, but parents must attend a Baptism class which is held at 12:30 pm on the last Sunday of every month. Contact the Parish Office to register for a class before the birth of your baby. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE Marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. If you are a registered, active member of the parish considering this vocation, you must meet with Deacon Dave at least six months before your desired wedding date. No date will be set prior to that meeting. For further information or to begin this process, contact the parish secretary. SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing.
