IPAA Issues & Insight A weekly update from the Independent Petroleum Association of America. January 15, 2015 Dear IPAA Member, The following is a brief round-up of what IPAA is focused on this week: METHANE: IPAA responds to White House regulations to curb methane VIDEO: Understanding what goes into your natural gas bill WILDCATTERS' BALL: 2015 honoree announced; purchase your tickets today U.S. Oil, Gas Producers: Additional methane regulations not needed. On Wednesday, the Obama Administration announced new costly and burdensome regulations to curb methane emissions. IPAA Executive Vice President Lee Fuller responded to the White House proposal to further regulate the oil and gas industry: “America’s energy producers have demonstrated a commitment to reducing methane emissions and are already incentivized by further capturing emissions with the help of new and innovative technologies. The administration’s own research shows that while United States oil and natural gas production has grown 400 percent, methane emissions have declined to about 1.3 percent of total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Existing regulations on new natural gas wells will further reduce these emissions. The Obama Administration needs to recognize that broad new regulatory actions are unnecessary and focus its attention on cooperative measures to cost effectively develop further reductions in this small component of the total GHG emissions inventory. Consequently, the fact that there is no price tag associated with the Administration’s proposal is cause for serious concerns, at a time where America’s oil and natural gas production industry is experiencing significant uncertainty.” Lee's comments follow my December Op-Ed in The Hill, “Methane emission reductions: An industry priority goes unrecognized.” Get the Top Five Facts on Methane Emissions and Hydraulic Fracturing: Understanding your natural gas bill. More than 177 million Americans use natural gas to cook a hot meal, heat their water or warm their houses. Many parts of the country have felt the chill of winter and that means folks are using more natural gas. The American Gas Association has developed a video to explain what goes into your natural gas bill. Wildcatters' Ball. U.S. Senator John Barrasso, Republican from Wyoming, will be the Honoree at the 2015 Wildcatters’ Ball. He is the fourth-ranking member in the Senate Republican leadership as Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee. Through his leadership on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources and Environment and Public Works Committees, he has conducted strong oversight on overreaching federal regulations and has supported legislation to promote the safe development of American oil and natural gas. The Wildcatters’ Ball is the primary fundraising event for the IPAA Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and the proceeds go toward funding the Foundation’s energy education programs. Please plan to join us on February 13 at the Hilton Americas – Houston for this very special black-tie gala. For seat/table reservations and sponsorships, click here.
