AUSTIN COLBERT • Hays Daily News
FHSU’s Jeremy Wilson hangs on the rim after completing an alley-oop dunk in the second
half against Northeastern State on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Tigers,
from C1
“ I’m really proud of
Achoki and how he played
tonight,” Nicholson added.
Without their all-MIAA
point guard, there were
certainly questions about how
well the Tigers would function
heading into Saturday’s game.
Those concerns were put to
rest rather quickly as FHSU
(11-6 overall, 5-4 MIAA)
led 25-3 more than midway
through the first half and took
a 42-17 lead into the locker
room.
“I thought we came out
with confidence. We made our
shots early and we needed to
do that against their zone,”
FHSU coach Mark Johnson
said. “We are kind of probably
still numb a little bit. I was
worried about just physical
and mental fatigue going into
this game. Obviously most
of us didn’t get a whole lot of
sleep after the game Thursday
up there with Craig. You go
through a lot of stuff mentally
and emotionally and I was
worried about us being ready
to go and I thought our guys
did a great job.”
Outside of a small lull in
the second half where NSU
(3-13, 1-8) got within 17
points, it was smooth sailing
for the Tigers. FHSU now has
won three straight in conference play after losing three of
its first four.
Jeremy Wilson led FHSU
with 17 points, Royce Williams (12) and Dom Samac
(11) also reaching double
figures, along with Moikobu’s
14. NSU’s Dakota Caudill led
all players with 20 points.
“We have a lot of seniors,
we have a lot of dogs in the
locker room. We are getting
better,” Moikobu said. “We
lost our brother. We lost the
head of the ship. The rest of
the season, not just this game,
is dedicated to Craig.”
Nicholson said he will have
surgery Tuesday to repair the
two fractures to his fibula,
which happened on what he
said “was pretty much a freak
accident.” How long he will
be out isn’t yet known, with
anywhere from six weeks to
six months being possible.
Either way, Nicholson knows
his junior season is over and
plans to do his best to help his
teammates from the sideline
the rest of the way.
“I just got to keep praying and hoping it’s quicker
than that because I don’t
know what I’m going to do
if I have to sit out that long,”
Nicholson said. “I always
love watching my team play
hard and get the win, but I’m
especially proud of Achoki
because I talked to him before the game and gave him
some tips.”
