ACT Now!
Jan 11, 2015
ACTNow! (Applying Christ’s Teaching NOW) follows the weekly sermon series of TPMC, and challenges us to apply
and put into practice the biblical truths we hear each week. It is the recommended Bible discussion material for
TPMC’s Cell Groups. Leader’s notes are available to all Cell Group Leaders at the Information Counter.
What Happens When We Read
By Rev Reuben Ng
SERMON SYNOPSIS
•
God is unlimited and infinite: His ways and thoughts are higher than ours [Isaiah 55:8]. Without Him
revealing Himself to us, we are not able to know Him.
•
Yet, God’s greatest desire is for us to know Him [John 17:3]. This is why God breathed out His Word
to us – in the form of the Bible.
•
Just as our words contain our thoughts, feelings, and desires; God’s Word reveals His thoughts,
feelings, and desires, so that in reading His Word we may all know Him [Hosea 6:6, Jeremiah 9:2324]. And as we know Him, we are encouraged, taught, rebuked, renewed, and transformed.
•
Although we may not fully understand what we read in the Bible at first, God will reveal in good time.
Therefore we press on to know God [Hosea 6:3]; for in doing so, our knowledge and personal
relationship with Him is eternal and will never be taken away from us [Luke 10:42].
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Share an example where God spoke to you from the Word. Which verse(s) was it and what was God
saying to you? What was your response?
[Children’s Activity: What is the best letter or card you’ve ever received? What made it so special?
Get the children to make and decorate their own card, containing their heartfelt words addressed to
God. They can then read it out as a prayer of thanksgiving.]

2.
Share with the group the last time you had a liking or crush on someone: what was your ultimate aim
in persistently writing letters, giving gifts and seeking to spend time with him/her? Relating this to
between God and us, why do we desire to read God’s letter to us, and what happens when we don’t
care to read His Word to us? [Verses to help us go deeper: Isaiah 1:2-3,12-17, Philippians 3:8-10]
3.
Many Christians spend years attending church without being transformed much into Christlikeness.
What is the biblical model for our transformation? What is the result of knowing God through His
Word? [Verses to help us go deeper: 2 Corinthians 3:18, John 15:7]
PRAYER POINTERS
•
Thank God that He first loved us and revealed Himself through His Word to us, that we can know
Him.
•
Pray that the desire of our hearts is to know and love God more, that we will hunger for His Word and
learn to quieten our hearts to listen to what He is saying to us.
MEMORY VERSE
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” [Colossians 3:16, ESV]
PRACTICAL HANDLE
As Pastor suggested, choose a suitable Bible reading plan that helps you to cover as much of the Bible in
the year, and commit time in your calendars in line with this plan. At regular intervals (e.g. end of each
month), CG members can be accountable and encourage each other on their progress.
