The Mid-Week Messenger
Jonesville United Methodist Church
October 8, 2014
Throughout the Sundays of October, we will be focusing on some
dramatic events from the Book of Exodus. Last Sunday we heard of God's gift of
the Ten Commandments. They were not only important for the ancient
Israelites, they are important for us today. They keep us safe and hold us
together in community. And they keep us holy and move us forward in
relationship with God.
Now you'd think that after God's liberation of the Israelite slaves out of
Egypt, deliverance from Pharaoh's charioteers at the Red Sea, and the awesome
gift of the Ten Commandments, that the Israelites would be faithful to God.
They were not! Before Moses could even read out the commandments of God,
the people turned away and broke covenant with God. They gathered their gold
earrings, melted them down, forged the image of a golden calf and worshiped it
with sacrifices, feasting, and partying.
Why did they do it? How could they do it! Truly, did God call them a
stubborn and stiff-necked people. But are we any different? In worship this
Sunday, we will look at some of the ways we are tempted to turn away and
break covenant with God. So may we be firm in our faith and loyal in our love
for the God made known to the Israelites in Exodus - the same God made known
to us in Jesus Christ.

The Annual Turkey Supper is right around the corner, October 18th. Here are
some ways you can help out. You can.....
Clean steam table, pots and pans, stove and ovens in the kitchen.
Shred cabbage and carrots, cut celery, carrots and onion, cube bread.
Make dressing, peel potatoes, cook squash, roast turkeys.
You can set up, wash up, clean up.
You can.... well you get the idea.
Please sign up in Fellowship Hall, or speak with Kathy Fedorchak at 877-7332.

Carrol and Joanne will be visiting our area in mid-October, and
worshiping with our congregation on October 19th. Carrol Newquist served as
the Senior Pastor of Jonesville UMC from 1992 through 2001. Those ten years
were some of the most creative and faithful times in the long history of our
church. Please come and greet these great saints of our church on October 19th.

The 10:30am worship on October 26th will begin with a Hymn Sing. Come
a little bit early, as we will start by 10:25. We will sing a couple of verses of each
hymn taken on a first come - first served basis. Janice Catuccio, our wonderful
pianist/organist, will accompany the hymns, and David will be this Hymn Sing's
song leader.
