(ECHN). ECHN includes Rockville General Hospital and Manchester Memorial Hospital and their affiliated practices. I have received calls and emails regarding this matter and what these changes will mean for patients and doctors. Specifically, I have heard concerns that patients will lose access to their doctors, hospitals and medical services. Applications for the 2014-15 energy assistance program are underway for all heat sources. Single individuals can gross up to $32,515 and couples up to $42,519. Assets cannot exceed $7,000 as a renter and $10,000 as a homeowner. If your assets exceed the limit and your income is low then you may still qualify. All new enrollees are welcome to try one free class.* You can join any class in the middle of a session with the class fee being propro-rated. Our instructors get paid an hourly rate no matter how many students are enrolled in the class, so we have historically charged a per class fee, payable by a 6 or 8 week session. Some classes more than pay for the instructor while other classes fall short, so we usually break even. In an effort to make it more affordable for those who would like to attend multiple exercise classes, we are going to try an “Annual Membership Fee” payable in January, cost is $400 for the year. This will allow you to take as many classes as you would like throughout the year for any exercise classes except for Light Aerobics and International Folk Dances, which are both drop in programs. Membership rules will be: ♦ Payment of $400 made in January, runs January 1 through December 31. ♦ Must still register for ALL classes you wish to attend. ♦ Prorated refunds will not be given unless for medical reasons, accompanied by a doctor’s note. ♦ This service is optional; you may still register for a session of a particular class ♦ This is a service we are offering to people 55 and over as a way to save you money and encourage participation in more classes. Room in the CARES Program The CARES group provides Center Activity, Recreation, Exercise and Socialization for residents 60 and over who can benefit from socialization due to cognitive or physical limitations. The group meets Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Community Center. CARES offers a variety of activities including music, crafts, games, reminiscence, current events, exercise, stretching and holiday celebrations. Lunch is served at 12 noon. Transportation is available. The cost is a suggested donation of $3 per day and a $2.50 donation for lunch. If you have limitations or disabilities but do not need medical or self-care assistance while in the group, you may benefit from this program. You will begin this art project with a drawn heart on watercolor paper, and with ink, imagination and creativity, you will add your own interpretation of the He“art” and love. Then adding watercolor to your drawing, you will bring your personal creation to life. We love beginners. If you are looking for something new and fun to learn to do, please join us. Corner From the Desk of Amy Patterson The CARES group activities are designed to promote wellness for those seniors who are in need of enhancement and maintenance of productivity in socialization, mobility, cognition and quality of life. The CARES group will begin the New Year with a Rockin' January. The entire month will be devoted to the 50's era. We will reminisce about the fashion, the movies, the "slang" terms as well as the music of the era. American Bandstand wil be featured on video. Puzzles include matching jukeboxes and sock hop trivia. The sport of the 50's social scene was Bowling, so the CARES Bowling Team will participate in their own tournament. We will have a guest volunteer on January 9th who will make SOUP with our group. It will be a welcome treat to have with lunch during the cold month, and prove to be enjoyable as well.
