The Problem of Loosing the Anchor:
There are many accidents involving anchor
losses & the trend seems to have increased.
Once an anchor is lost; there will be many other
consequences which will have to be dealt with.
It is very expensive to loose an anchor. The
replacement is costly & you get commercially
damaged plus the fact that you must recover
the anchor, if in the area under some
jurisdiction necessitating it.
Facts and Findings:
1. There is a figure as high as over seven
percent of ships loosing anchors.
2. About seventy percent of all anchor
losses occur in deep waters where the
anchors are very difficult & nearly
impossible to salve or retrieve.
3. Loosing an anchor may result in
collisions or getting stranded in a shoal
or on a rock with grave consequences
like loss of life/ship and pollution.
Advisory measures:
1. A systematic approach towards risk
assessment with respect to anchoring
conditions should be adopted.
2. The new design & development of
anchors is so that they are far less
strong comparing with the old types.
The bitter ends are somehow designed
to break & give way under certain
amount of pressure; rather than the
former arrangements where they would
not break easily & hold until the
attached equipment & structure were
damaged.
3. It is important to note that most anchors
are lost in deep water while letting go
down through an appreciable depth to
reach the bottom.
4. The anchoring procedure in deep water
- defined as over 30/40 metres - should
be implemented. A pragmatically
professional advice which is based on
numerous
experiments

in
such
circumstances.
The drawbacks of "walking back" may
be too many, which will have to be
borne in mind. Amongst which are: lack
of time for such manoeuvres; limited
capability/strength of windlass & the
anchor ancillary to hold the weight;
possibility of not holding after
anchoring; local pilots' insistence on
"drop-anchoring" and so on.
It is vital to check the existence of a
routine maintenance procedure for the
windlass, anchor & the brake system in
the Planned Maintenance Programme,
if not; such deficiency should be
properly taken care of.
The conception of senior seafarers
concerning the "Anchoring" is that they
should be dropped to "HOLD". They
would at times lower a few first
shackles by the gear & then let go by
gravity. This is also proven to be wrong,
taking into account the acceleration
forces exerted onto the anchor & the
associated attachments in "deep
water".
Many anchors are lost after a dragging
incident having been un-noticed, hence
checking the position frequently &
establishing a systematic "Anchor
watch" is extremely essential.
Surely a single approach for all
conditions can not be solicited as
"perfect" & thus the situation should be
analyzed and the safest solution
achieved. We must remember that the
ships are not as unbreakable as they
used to be but the seas are more
crowded & seafarers in more haste. We
must admit & consider these facts to
achieve favourable results.
